Week 5 PASS/FAIL Reports: Big 10

BIG 10

PASS: Indiana, Purdue, Northwestern, Iowa, Michigan, Illinois

Despite losing RB Jordan Howard to an ankle injury, Indiana still led Ohio State at the half, and forced the Buckeyes to play on their heels all day long. Despite losing 34-27, Indiana receives a PASS for a heroic effort on the day, even after losing Howard and QB Nate Sudfeld.

Purdue also lost, but gets a PASS on effort alone as they refused to go away, as Markell Jones rushed for 157 yards in the losing effort.

Northwestern shut out Minnesota for the first time since 1959 in a 27-0 win. The Wildcat defense led the day once again, and Clayton Thorson rushed for 2 TDs in the win. Northwestern is 5-0 for the first time since 2012.

Iowa survived a grinding nail biter to hang onto a 10-6 win over Wisconsin, and capitalized on 3 crucial Badger turnovers, including a fumble recovery at the 1 yard line to prevent Wisconsin from pulling ahead late. It’s the first Iowa win over Wisconsin since 2009, and Kirk Ferentz got his 120^th career win.

Michigan earned their 2^nd straight shutout in a 28-0 win over Maryland. Drake Johnson rushed for one score and caught another as the Wolverines blew the game open in the 3^rd quarter during a 15-0 run.

Illinois got 2 4^th quarter TD passes from We Lunt to knock off Nebraska at home 14-13, giving Bill Cubit his 1^st Big 10 win.

FAIL: Ohio State, Michigan State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maryland, Penn State, Nebraska

Zeke Elliott ran for 274 yards and 3 TDs, and it’s a good thing he did, as the Buckeyes were forced to score 28 points in the 2^nd half, and were also forced to deflect a desperation pass in the end zone as the clock expired to hold off Indiana. Ohio State was supposed to be far better than this in 2015.

Michigan State jumped to a 21-0 lead over Purdue, and then were held to a FG in the 2^nd half and had to fend off a very bad Purdue team to hang on to a 24-21 win. The Spartans, like the Buckeyes, are not living up to expectations despite being unbeaten.

Minnesota suffered through another offensively inept performance against Northwestern, rolling up a paltry 183 total yards of offense and it looks like they will be a non-factor in the Big 10 race.

Wisconsin now on the outside looking in in the conference race, as Joel Stave tossed two picks and fumbled at the Iowa 1 yard line in a 10-6 loss. The root cause of the loss was an offense that was absolutely abysmal throughout, and the Badgers absolutely need to go out and recruit a QB in the worst way.

Maryland was held to just 105 total yards on the day in a 28-0 loss to Michigan, and the locals are grumbling, as the fire Randy Edsall/Hire Chip Kelly calls are starting to come in. Remember that Maryland nearly hired Mike Leach before settling on Edsell.

Penn State needed 3 turnovers from Army, and Christian Hackenburg underperformed once again with just 156 yards passing, and the Nittany Lions survived an uninspired effort to win 20-14 at home.

Tommy Armstrong completed just 10/31 passes on the day, and Nebraska is off to their worst start (2-3) in 60 years under Mike Riley, who is already receiving heat in year one as head coach.

Week 5 PASS/FAIL Reports: Big 12

Big 12

PASS: TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Iowa State

TCU rolled out to a 37-0 lead at the half in their 50-7 win over Texas, and rolled up over 600 yards in the process. KaVontae Turbin caught 4 TDs in the easy win for the Frogs.

Baylor scored 49 points on Texas Tech by halftime, and the Bears eased to a 63-35 win at the Jerry Dome. Shock Linwood rushed for 221 yards and 2 TDs in the win.

Oklahoma passed a major test at home and never trailed during a 44-24 win over West Virginia. Baker Mayfield added another 3 TDs to his big season for the Sooners through the air.

PK Ben Gogan saved Oklahoma State for the 2^nd straight week, kicking a last minute FG to give Oklahoma State a 36-34 win over pesky Kansas State. Mason Rudolph passed for 437 yards and 3 TDs in the win.

Iowa State jumped to a 17-0 lead over hapless Kansas at the half and never looked back in a 38-13 win, their 2^nd of the season. Mike Warren rushed for 175 yards and 2 scores in the win.

FAIL: Texas, Texas Tech, West Virginia, Kansas State, Kansas

Texas has now lost two straight to TCU for the first time since 1959 after getting blown out at home 50-7. Their 1-4 start is the worst start in Texas history since 1956, and the Charlie Long rumors are flying wild.

Patrick Mahomes tossed 2 picks, and Texas Tech has fallen to 36-37-1 all-time against the Bears after a 63-35 loss in Arlington. Tech is now 3-2 on the season.

West Virginia was outscored 10-0 in the 4^th, and Oklahoma pulled away for a 44-24 win, and Skyler Howard was roughed up and tossed 2 picks in the loss. This was the first major test for WVU after a fairly weak non con slate, and they failed miserably.

Kansas State had Oklahoma State on the ropes, but gave up a late FG to lose 36-34. Kody Cook passed for just 122 yards in the loss.

Kansas found themselves down to Iowa State 24-0 before scoring at all in a 38-13 loss, their only legit shot at winning a game this season. The Jayhawks rushed for just 38 yards in the loss on the road.

Week 5 PASS/Fail Reports: ACC

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE

PASS: Clemson, Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, Louisville, North Carolina

Clemson held off a late Notre Dame rally to pass a major prime time test, and LB BJ Goodson came up with two turnovers in the win. That celebration by the fan base at the end was a bit overplayed, however.

In a loss, Wake Forest should actually be proud this week. The Deacons actually outgained Florida State on offense, and pushed the Seminoles until the very end in an 8 point loss.

Pat Narduzzi’s Pitt D was a huge winner this week, holding Virginia Tech to just 100 yards in the 17-13 win. Qadree Ollison did the job for the Panthers, rushing for 122 yards and a score.

Louisville jumped out to a 17-7 lead over NC State on the road, and the Cardinals held on for a 20-13 win, just their first win this season against an FBS team.

North Carolina rallied from a 21-0 deficit to beat Georgia Tech 38-31 on the road, and Marquise Williams rushed for 2 TDs and caught another to help seal their first road win against Georgia Tech in 8 tries.

FAIL: Miami, Florida State, Virginia Tech, NC State, Boston College, Duke, Georgia Tech

Miami had no answer for Cincinnati freshman QB Hayden Moore, and allowed the Bearcats to hold the ball for the final 5:11 of the game in the loss, the first by Miami to UC since 1947.

Florida State beat Wake Forest, but largely failed because they have been incredibly uninspired in ACC wins over Boston College, and now against Wake Forest in a much narrower than expected 24-16 win. FSU has to get some fire in their bellies, as they have none right now.

Virginia Tech has no offense right now, and are living off their defense after a 17-13 loss that drops the Hokies to 2-3 overall. The Hokies rushed for just nine yards and turned the ball over three times.

NC State allowed 4 sacks on the day, and 1st their first game of the season to Louisville at home. NC State lost 2 fumbles, and converted on just 5/15 3^rd down tries.

Duke jumped out to a 9-0 lead on Boston College, but both teams largely ended up getting a FAIL this week, as neither team has an offense worth writing home about. Ross Martin hit 3 FGs to account for all of Duke’s scoring, while both teams combined to convert on just 9/33 3^rd down attempts.

Georgia Tech has now lost 3 straight after blowing a late 28-24 lead over North Carolina in a 38-31 loss. Tech led 21-0 at one point early, and was outscored 38-10 the rest of the way. The season is quickly falling apart in Atlanta.

Week 5 PASS/FAIL Report: AAC

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

PASS: Cincinnati, Memphis, Temple, USF, Houston, Tulane, Navy, East Carolina

Cincinnati beat Miami for the 1^st time since 1947, and Hayden Moore passed for two TDs and ran for one more in the win over Miami in non con action.

Memphis didn’t play their best game of the season, and found themselves behind to USF 10-0 at one point, but their defense led a charge, and the Tigers used a 17-7 run in the 2^nd half to win 24-17. Paxton Lynch accounted for all three TDs in the passing game.

USF gets a pass this week, as they largely played their best game of the season against the AAC favorites, and had every chance at winning this game despite falling short.

Temple rolled to an easy 37-3 win over Charlotte, and scored 20 points in the 3^rd to blow the game open. Jahad Thomas rushed for two TDs in the win.

Greg Ward passed for 273 yards, and added 186 yards on the ground, and Houston used a 14-7 4^th to put Tulsa away for good. The Cougars rolled up 347 yards rushing in the win.

Tulane received 4 TD passes from Tanner Lee, and the Green Wave beat UCF in the AAC opener for both. Tulane has now won two straight.

Navy jumped ahead of Air Force 21-0 and cruised to a 33-11 win. The Middies have an overall 8 game winning streak for the first time since 1979, and Keenan Reynolds accounted for 314 yards on the day with a passing score.

East Carolina outscored SMU 28-0 in the 2^nd half on the way to a 49-23 blowout win over the Mustangs, and backup QB James Summers came in and passed for 2 TDs in the win. Summers will likely become the starter moving forward.

FAIL: U Conn, Tulsa, UCF, SMU

U Conn was neck and neck with BYU, but then allowed the Cougars to outscore them 20-3 in the 3^rd, and BYU pulled away for the win. The Huskies finished just 3/14 on 3^rd downs, and lost their third straight game.

Tulsa gave up 674 yards in the conference opening loss to Houston, and the Golden Hurricane recorded 10 penalties in the loss.

UCF has now fallen to 0-5 on the season after a 45-31 loss to Tulane to open AAC play. The Knights rushed for just 14 yards on only 11 carries on the day.

SMU was shut out by East Carolina after the half, as the Mustangs led 23-21 at the break before losing 49-23. SMU jumped to a 23-7 lead, and never scored again. The Mustangs were held to just 40 yards rushing in the loss.
