OFFENSE
302.3 yards per game
Oh, what a mess the passing game was in 2010. Nothing really worked out very well, and starter Tanner Price looked completely spun around most of the time. Jim Grobe's offense never has called for a pass happy attack, but this was really bad. Price averaged 122.6 yards per game on the season as a freshman. That's nothing that I am going to jump around about. Ted Stachitas and Skylar Jones never were able to separate themselves from Price when give a chance, so Price stayed in the job. Kevin Sousa was brought in as a 3 star.
Josh Adams was supposed to be a star after he blew up on the scene as a freshman. He never got any better than that, and finally lost the job as the primary back. His career ended on a bad note this season, as he was held to just 316 yards. Josh Harris got a shot as a freshman and rushed for 720 yards and 7 scores. Brandon Pendergrass and Tommy Bohannon should try to push him somewhat in 2011, but niether has proved to be a force as of yet. DeAndre Martin and Orville Reynolds will both be new backs on the roster, but both are 3 stars.
Not one receiver picked up 40 catches in 2010. The WR corps is not deep, as Chris Givens and Devon Brown were both the leading receivers (514 yards and 302 yards). Marshall Williams was the only other receiver that grabbed more than 20 passes, but he graduates. Michael Campanaro and Danny Dembry will be expected to do much more next season.Sherman Ragland will be given every opportunity to work his way into the rotation. Cameron Ford is the starting TE, but he did virtually nothing this season.
The Deamon Deacons will lose 3 starters from this offensive line. Both tackles will have to be replaced, as will Barrett McMillan at guard. That is terrible news. Dennis Godfrey and Doug Weaver are first in line to compete for the tackle jobs. Michael Hoag will try to win the vacant guard job. Joe Looney will return to start at guard, and Russell Nenon will return at center. The depth will be negligible. 3 new linemen will join the group, but there is no viable instant impact player in the group.
DEFENSE
430.7 yards allowed per game
The defense was basically just as bad as the offense was in 2010. They Deacons could not stop a herd of girlscouts laden down with boxes of cookies. It seems like rebuilding time in Winston-Salem.
The good news is that both starting ends come back in Tristan Dorty and Gelo Orange. Dorty had 44 tackles on the year, but Orange was a non-factor. Kyle Wilbur came out of nowhere to lead the group with 65 tackles on the season. Nikita Whitlock came on as well with 10.5 TFLs. Wilbur had 14.5 TFLs on the year as well. The bad news is that both tackles graduate in Boo Raobinson and John Russell, but neither player was a star in 2010.
The Linebacker group was less than awesome in 2010. Hunter Haynes led the team with 75 tackles, and Matt Woodlief had 11.5 TFLs on the season. Woodlief, however, only had 57 tackles on the season. Mike Olsen and Joey Ehrmann will both push for playing time next season, as they combined for 85 tackles. Scott Betros and Kyle Jarrett both pushed for time, and they will both push harder in 2011.
The secondary basically got shredded this season. Alex Frye led the team with only 3 picks, and he is gone now. Only 3 other DBs had picks, but the totals were low, to say the least. Kenny Okoro led the team with 5 pass breakups. The productivity has to get better, but again, depth is an issue here.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Jimmy Newman was a bright spot at PK this season. He hit 12 of 13 FGs on the season and all 31 PATs on the year. He will be a junior in 2011, so expect more of the same.
Shane Popham will be the starting punter, but he was not very good in 2010, and he will expect competition from Alex Wulfcek in spring ball.
Michael Campanaro and Chris Givens handled the kick return duties, and Campanaro specifically did a solid job.
Devon Brown should be back to return punts once again.
FINAL NOTES
Things got ugly this season for Jim Grobe and his Deacons. Remember that Wake Forest was in the Orange Bowl just a few short seasons ago as the ACC champ. The wheels have come off of the wagon ever since then. Grobe has got to turn this around, but I will place him on my hot seat to start the year, and I don't see him coming off of it. This team has several holes to fill, and the talent level is not great. The recruiting class was very average at best.
2011 NON-CONFERENCE OPPONENTS
Only two dates have been annonced, 11/5 Notre Dame, and 11/26 Vanderbilt.
