Bilo's College Football PASS/FAIL Reports Week 5: Conference USA

CUSA finally, for the first time in 2016, finished the week with even passing grades to failing grades, but one team still seems to have me befuddled, and that is Marshall, who was once again blown out this week. After a strong start against Morgan State, the Herd has fallen off the rails in a horrifying way. Here are the grades for week 5:

Conference USA

PASS: Old Dominion, Middle Tennessee, FIU, Louisiana Tech, Western Kentucky, Southern Miss

Jeremy Cox rushed for 3 TDs in limited duty this week, and Old Dominion is now 2-0 against Charlotte after a 52-17 blowout win, which snapped a 3 game losing streak for the Monarchs.

Brent Stockstill passed for 2 TDs, and Middle Tennessee went on a 23-0 scoring run after trailing 7-0 in the first quarter to North Texas. The Blue Raiders are now 4-1 overall in a must win season for this coaching staff.

FIU rebounded from the firing of Ron Turner to edge out FAU this week 33-31 under interim coach Ron Cooper. Alex McGough survived turnover issues to pass for a TD and rush for 2 more on the day in a huge rebound win.

Ryan Higgins passed for 2 TDs and rushed for another, as Louisiana Tech led UTEP from start to finish in a 28-7 win. The Bulldogs ran the ball effectively all night, averaging 8.9 yards per carry.

Western Kentucky led FCS member Houston Baptist 30-3 at the half, and then poured 20 more on in the 3^rd on the way to a 50-3 win over the Huskies. Mike White got back to being himself in this game, and tossed 3 TDs in the win.

Southern Miss used a 21 point 3^rd quarter to blow open the win against Rice this week. Nick Mullins passed for 591 yards and 4 TDs in the win for the Golden Eagles.

FAIL: Charlotte, North Texas, FAU, UTEP, Rice, Marshall

Charlotte only managed 17 points despite running 84 plays in a 52-17 loss to Old Dominion. The 49ers have dropped to 1-4 on the season.

North Texas jumped out on Middle Tennessee early, and then fell off the grid. The Mean Green has now won consecutive games since 2013.

FAU, playing their rival who fired their coach this week, could not use that in a Shula Bowl loss to FIU. The Owls defense failed to hold the Panthers when necessary in a 33-31 loss, which could very well cost Charlie Harbridge his job.

UTEP is just disintegrating now after a 28-7 loss to Louisiana Tech, and Sean Kugler’s job security is now faltering at an alarming pace.

Rice, now at 0-5 after a loss to Southern Miss, may also be in the market for a new coach, as the Owls remain lifeless in 2016. David Bailiff is not taking this program anywhere.

Marshall is the most stunning team in the nation this season, and are now just 1-3 after three straight horrible losses, this week to Pitt. 

Bilo's College Football PASS/FAIL Reports Week 5: Big 10

It was not the most glorious of weeks in Big 10 play in week 5. Michigan looked mortal against Wisconsin, missed 3 FGs, and had to mash out a 14-7 win over the Badgers. Nebraska needed a 21 point 4th to beat Illinois. Ohio State unleashed pure destructive fire on Rutgers, and Maryland looked like an NFL team playing Purdue. Iowa lost again, and now it looks like the Buckeyes are in complete control in the Big 10 race. Here are the week 5 grades:

Big 10

PASS: Ohio State, Nebraska, Indiana, Northwestern, Maryland, Penn State

Ohio State is now unmistakable as the best team in the Big 10 after their 58-0 romp over former assistant Chris Ash and Rutgers. The Buckeyes scored 45 points in 2 quarters in the win.

Nebraska gets a pass despite needing 21 points in the final quarter to take out Illinois this week. Terrell Newby rushed for 2 TDs in the win for the Huskers, who remain undefeated.

Indiana came back late, drove the game into OT, and defeated Michigan State at home, snapping a 7 game losing streak to Sparty. Indiana won just their 3^rd OT game all-time.

Northwestern has to be the most frustrating team in the conference, beating the other most frustrating team, Iowa, 38-31, for their best offensive showing of the season. Clayton Thorson passed for 3 TDs in the win for the Wildcats, and that win was a must get for them at this point after a horrible start to the season.

DJ Durkin may be on my list for both Big 10 and national coach of the year right now after the Terps blasted Purdue 50-7. Ty Johnson rushed for 204 yards on just 7 carries, and the defense held Purdue to just 10 yards rushing on the day.

Penn State was also a team on must win alert, and they got one in OT over Minnesota. Trace McSorley passed for one TD and rushed for another, and Penn State’s late score in regulation prevented Minnesota from walking out with a win they thought they had with less than a minute remaining when they scored last.

FAIL: Rutgers, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Michigan State, Iowa, Purdue, Minnesota

Rutgers completed just 3 passes on the day in a 58-0 loss to Ohio State. Rutgers also rushed for just 2.2 yards per carry, and finished the game with just 116 yards total. Rutgers is bad. The end.

Wisconsin failed to generate enough offense to sustain their defense’s wonderful day against Michigan in a 14-7 loss. The Badgers finished with just 159 yards and 8 1^st downs on the day in a 14-7 loss.

Michigan fails because they literally tried everything they could do to hand the Badgers the win, including missing 3 FGs on the day and tossing an INT that set the Badgers up nicely. Michigan, who ran the ball very well last week, was held to just 3 yards per carry this week.

Illinois imploded while on their way to upsetting Nebraska this week, and gave up 21 unanswered points in the final quarter to fall to just 1-3 under Lovey Smith. This is not what one expected when he was hired.

Michigan State started the season uninspired in a near disaster against Furman. The lack of energy continued this week as the Spartans completely folded late in a loss in OT to Indiana. Sparty is now just 2-2, and one has to think that they will not have enough to beat Michigan or Ohio State this season.

Bilo's College Football PASS/FAIL Reports Week 5: Big 12

It was another less than stellar week in Big 12 play, where even two winners get failing grades for not putting teams away, or just playing lazy football in situations where a blowout was warranted. One of those grades goes to Oklahoma for their half baked approach to their 4th quarter win against TCU, and one goes to Baylor, for allowing one of the worst teams in the nation to dominate them for three quarters before finally deciding to show up and play in the 4th. Here are the miserable grades for the Big 12 in week 5:

PASS: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, West Virginia

Pat Mahomes and Nic Shimonek both passed for 4 TDs as Texas Tech rolled past Kansas 55-19. Jonathon Giles caught 12 passes in the win and scored twice. The Red Raiders have scored 50 points in 9 straight home games.

Oklahoma State survived a wild 1^st half to outlast Texas 49-31 in Stillwater. Mason Rudolph passed for 3 TDs and rushed for another, and the Cowboys took advantage of a crumbling Longhorn secondary all day long.

West Virginia survived a low scoring affair to beat Kansas State 17-16, and scored both of their TDs in the 4^th to win it. This was just the 2^nd win ever by the Mountaineers over Kansas State, and they are 4-0 for the 1^st time since 2012.

FAIL: Kansas, Baylor, Iowa State, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas, Kansas State

Kansas was down 28-9 at the half against Texas Tech and never made it seriously close. This was the 23^rd loss in 25 games for the Jayhawks, who continue to show a lack of development under David Beaty.

Baylor needed a 17-0 run in the 4^th quarter, and a FG as time expired to handle Iowa State, one of the worst teams in the nation. The Bears allowed ISU to gain 191 total yards in the 1^st quarter alone, and were seriously fortunate to get out of Ames alive.

Iowa State also failed in this game, as they had Baylor beaten several times, and then laid an egg in the 4^th when it counted, and accumulated just 7 total yards in the final quarter to lose to the Bears.

Oklahoma also fails despite a win this week that was just lazy. The Sooners, with a 3 TD lead in the 3^rd, stopped playing football in the 4^th thinking the game was in the bag against TCU, and allowed the Frogs to score 22 points in the final quarter to nearly steal the win. That’s lazy coaching, and lazy execution by the Sooners players.

TCU, despite nearly knocking off Oklahoma, also fails this week for completely imploding in the 3^rd quarter, allowing 14 points that gave OU what they needed to get far enough ahead to walk away with a win. Had TCU gotten a better start in the 3^rd, they win this football game.

Texas fell to Oklahoma State on the road, and has now allowed 40 points in 3 straight games after the 49-31 loss. What was even worse was the lack of tackling ability Texas displayed, and the lack of overall speed and talent to match up with OSU. Texas could not come up with a stop all day, and the defense may as well not have been on the field. It looks obvious that Charlie Strong is on his way out at the end of the year right now, barring some kind of miracle.

Kansas State has proven that they can defend. They held Skylar Howard to just one TD pass this week, but unfortunately, with a 16-3 lead entering the 4^th, the Wildcats just shut down and allowed 14 points to lose for just the 2^nd time ever to WVU. If Kansas State had an offense, any offense, they win this game. 

Bilo's College Football PASS/FAIL Reports Week 5: ACC

It was a solid week in non con play this week in the ACC, as Boston College and Pitt picked up wins, but Syracuse fell to Notre Dame. Clemson/Louisville lived up to the billing, and North Carolina/Florida State was a last minute thriller. The Lowest point total any game winner put on the board this week was NC State's 33 in their win over Wake Forest. Here are the final week 5 grades for the ACC:

PASS: Clemson, North Carolina, Miami, Virginia, Boston College, NC State, Pittsburgh

Clemson raced out to a 28-10 lead at the half, and then held on at the end to extend their home game winning streak to 19 games. It was not a perfect win for Clemson over Louisville, but it was the biggest game in the nation this week, and Clemson pulled it out.

Mitch Trubisky has still not tossed an INT for North Carolina, as he tossed 2 more TDs and ran for another, as North Carolina, despite blowing a 21-0 lead, beat Florida State with a FG as time expired.

Freshman Shaquille Quarterman scored on a Georgia Tech fumble, and Miami scored twice on the day on defensive scores, which was the difference in a 35-21 win over Georgia Tech. RB Mark Walton has now scored 18 times in his last 17 games for the Hurricanes.

Virginia used a late fumble recovery and INT, and Kurt Benkert passed for 3 TDs as Virginia handled Duke 34-20 in ACC play. It was the first road win for UVA since 2012.

Boston College held Buffalo to 67 yards on the day, 17 minutes of time of possession, and just 5 1^st downs in a 35-3 non con win at home, driving the Eagles to 3-2 on the season. Boston College also rolled up 400 yards in the win.

NC State rolled to a 17-0 1^st quarter lead, and rolled to a 33-16 win over Wake Forest in ACC play. Ryan Finley passed for 3 TDs, and the Pack has now taken 4 of the last 5 in the series.

Pitt moved out to a 27-0 lead over Marshall at the half, and then cruised the rest of the way on the way to a non con 43-27 win over the Thundering Herd. Jester Weah caught 7 passes for 176 yards and a score in the win for the Panthers. James Connor extended his TD streak to 13 straight games.

FAIL: Louisville, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Duke, Wake Forest

Lamar Jackson scored 3 total TDs, but was sacked 5 times, and a terribly executed play by his receiver lost the game at Clemson, and the Cardinals will now fall out of our PRS top ranking for the first time in 3 weeks. Jackson now has 28 TDs in 5 games this season.

Despite a massive comeback, Florida State lost at the buzzer on a game winning FG for UNC, and Jimbo Fisher lost his 1^st ACC opener of his career. FSU was penalized 13 times in the loss, which is a hugely unacceptable mark.

Georgia Tech gave up 2 TDs on turnovers, and lost by exactly 14 points to Miami at home. Tech allowed Miami to basically dominate despite only holding the football for 20 minutes on defense.

Duke has now dropped to 0-2 in ACC play after a home loss to Virginia. Duke turned the football over 6 times in the loss, including twice in the final quarter.

Wake Forest was held to just 69 yards rushing on the day, and were buried on the scoreboard before the 1^st quarter ended in a loss to NC State, their first loss of the season. The Deacons gave up over 500 yards of offense in the loss. 

Bilo's College Football PASS/FAIL Reports Week 5: AAC

Week five basically went a bit sideways for the American Athletic Conference, as a week after finishing ahead of the Big 12 in our conference power rankings, the league received just 5 passing grades to 6 failing grades. Houston was the only member in the top 3 in the league that succeeded this week, and that could have implications in the league rankings. Here are the week 5 grades for the AAC:

PASS: UCF, Houston, Temple, Tulane, USF

Dontravious Wilson scored twice, and UCF used a 24 point 4^th quarter to power past East Carolina on the road. UCF has outscored their last two opponents 100-43, and Scott Frost is having an immediate impact as head coach on his 1^st season.

After yet another sluggish start, Houston scored 28 points in the 2^nd quarter, and blew out U Conn in a revenge match from a year ago. Greg Ward was 32/38 passing with 3 TDs, and rushed for 2 more in the easy win.

Temple scored 35 points in a span of 13 minutes, and Temple pounded SMU 45-20 at home. Ryquell Anderson, who was starting in relief, rushed for 154 yards and 2 TDs in the win.

Tulane barely earns a pass, but the Green Wave win at U Mass 31-24 after trailing at the half. The Pass comes from the fact that Willie Fritz now has Tulane at 3-2 for the season, a massive improvement over a year ago.

USF rushed for 5 team TDs, including 2 by Marlon Mack, and the Bulls shut out Cincy in the 2^nd half on the way to a 45-20 win.

FAIL: U Conn, Memphis, East Carolina, SMU, Navy, Cincinnati

East Carolina turned the football over 4 times in their loss to UCF, and could not take advantage of a lagging UCF passing game in an 18 point home loss to the Knights in AAC play.

U Conn had no answer for Greg Ward Thursday night, and the defense gave up 27 1^st downs in a 28 point road loss to Houston in AAC play.

Chad Morris is having the opposite effect on his program in the AAC than Scott Frost is having at UCF. SMU has not gotten nearly off the ground in a year and a half, and SMU was down 35-14 at the half to Temple in their loss.

Riley Ferguson tossed 3 INTs and never passed for a TD as Memphis found themselves down to Ole Miss 24-7 at the half on non-con action. Ferguson only rushed for a score, and never found the end zone passing.

Navy rushed for just 57 yards on 38 attempts, and could not find a passing game to make up for it, and the Middies never scored until the 4^th quarter in a 28-14 loss to rival Air Force.

Cincinnati only racked up 121 yards after the half in a 25 point home loss to USF, which dropped the Bearcats to just 0-2 in AAC play. Despite the huge loss, Cincy was basically even in total yards and 1^st downs with USF.
