Bilo's College Football Saturday's Best Games: Week 10

Here is my Saturday menu for the best games offered on the schedule:

Alabama at LSU: Blood feud continues for SEC West dominance, Orgeron looks to keep his gig.
Maryland at Michigan: Durkin vs. Harbaugh should be a fun match in any sport.
Nebraska at Ohio State: Huskers looking to stop skid, Bucks looking to rebound from 2 bad weeks.
Florida at Arkansas: Hogs looking to walk in and mess stuff up in SEC East race by beating Gators.
Iowa at Penn State: Are the Nittany Lions for real at this point? Answer is yes if they win.
Oklahoma State at Kansas State: Cowboys can still win Big 12, but is this Ames all over again?
Air Force at Army: Commander-In-Chief trophy series game, and both looking for bowl bids.
Memphis at SMU: Memphis is trending down, SMU up, and Mustangs are in hunt for bowl bid.

Best of the FCS on Saturday
Villanova at Maine: Maine is a playoff candidate with a win over Wildcats.
Penn at Princeton: Surprising Tigers need a big win to hold off strong Quakers.
Samford at Citadel: Citadel showing no drop off with new coach, Samford looking strong as well.
North Dakota at Northern Colorado: UNC is trying to sneak into playoff race, needs this win.
Youngstown State at North Dakota State: MVC tilt brings title chase to full tilt.
James Madison at Richmond: Best game on CAA schedule this season. Winner likely wins title.
McNeese State at Sam Houston State; McNeese looking to play spoiler, has underachieved.
Eastern Washington at Cal Poly: EWU facing road block to Big Sky title chase on the road.

Coaches Swimming in the Dead Pool, On the Hot Seat

Here are my candidates for the College Football Coaches Dead Pool as we head into the November sprint to the finish! These are coaches who I see being fired at the end of this season, or sometime before:

David Beaty, Kansas
Beaty has still not won a Big 12 game in almost two full seasons at the helm of the Jayhawks, and he has won just one game overall. Let's not talk about development or program building here, because it is evident that none of this is happening. This was a terrible hire when it was made, and his former boss at Rice is about to join him on this list.

David Bailiff, Rice
The AD at Rice has intimated that a change will come at the end of the season, but he feels that mid-season firings are tasteless. Bailiff will be gone at the end of this season, and the Owls still have not won a game this season.

Charlie Partridge, FAU
The Owls are going nowhere under Partridge, and sources are saying the heat level is blazing for Partridge at this point. Again, this was not a great hire when it made, so it is time to rectify this issue.

Trent Miles, Georgia State
Even those who have defended Miles to me in the past have given up on doing so. The chants of the scant Panther fan base are chanting for blood. This season, short of almost upsetting Wisconsin, has been an abject disaster.

The Next list is our current hot seat list. These coaches may be able to save themselves with strong finishes, but the heat is on if they do not.

Lovie Smith, Illinois
He is in his first season, but reports surfaced this week that Smith is already talking about bailing on this job at the end of this season. It never felt like a good match, and the season has been long and painful. I just don't think that he believed it would be this hard to win.

Sean Kugler, UTEP
He was seen as a hero last season, but the Miners have turned south, and it is getting worse every week. Kugler may end up on the Dead Pool list by next week.

Paul Haynes, Kent State
I am elevating him out of the pool this week, as there have been some flashes of late, but another loss, and Kent State is ineligible for a bowl, and that may kick him back into the pool.

Rod Carey, Northern Illinois
This season has certainly been a mess, and one could say he had been winning with Dave Doeren's talent before. Carey has got to turn the tide, because the fan base is getting prickly.

Ron Caragher, San Jose State
Did he do enough to save himself by beating UNLV last week? I am giving him a week off from the pool, but he could splash right back in with another bad loss.

Jim Mora, UCLA
The fans have turned against him. The media is following suit in a huge way with Mora's asshole approach to them weekly. The players are starting to obviously tune him out, and he looks as if he is giving up, much like he did to the Atlanta Falcons. Even his staff is completely adrift without a rudder it would seem. He could end up quitting, as he looks like he just wants out.

Rich Rodriguez, Arizona
Rich Rod has been a disaster since leaving West Virginia. He has no QB, there is no depth to his roster, and buyout be damned, he could be gone sooner than you think. At least, unlike Mora, he is still behaving with the media.

Doug Martin, New Mexico State
His is a thankless job. NMSU will likely never be a winner. Martin took the job because nobody else wanted to work for the inept athletic leadership that was in place at the time that he took the job. Now he as been stuck with it, and nothing has gotten better. Fire him, or don't, because I don't see how this program will improve overall.

Big Ten Adds to Glut of College Football On TV With Friday Games, Other Big 10 News

Obvioulsy, the Big 10 has not learned the lesson of the NFL this season, nor has the NCAA. The NFL ratings are significantly down this season, and a lot of that has to do with a glut of games, many meaningless, that have been televised by the league. In over saturating their product, the NFL has actually damaged their TV offerings and the experience of viewing these games, because, there is no longer enough time to build up any buzz from week to week.
The NCAA needs to learn that as well, as Tuesday MAC games are about as interesting as mowing a lawn. Nobody thinks Tuesdays and college football in the same thought pattern. Or Wednesdays, or Fridays for that matter.
In their infinite wisdom, the Big 10 has announced that they will offer a Friday night package beginning in 2017. That has been received with mixed reviews, and Michigan has already announced that they will not take part. Penn State and Ohio State both announced that they will not allow the league to host home games on Fridays next season in their stadiums, and Penn State has offered to play only one road Friday night game. High School football in PA and Ohio are huge deals, and Penn State and Ohio State both addressed that concern in their statements. In other words, they refuse to trample on that tradition.
All in all, when your league is not remotely behind you 100%, this probably looks like a horrible move, and it is.

In Other Big Ten News

Purdue has announced that they are going all in on football moving forward, and will be willing to spend big on their next coach. The Boilermakers have hired DHR International to work as a search firm, and no target will be off their list. Now, we only have to wait to see who takes them seriously. Expect Purdue to make big offers to targets like Les Miles and PJ Fleck.

Rumors are now circulating out of Illinois that Lovey Smith is absolutely miserable coaching the Illini, and in the college game in general, and may leave of his own volition after this, his first year at the helm of the Illini. He has fully denied this, but there is too much smoke here for there not to be a fire. Illinois is 2-6 this season, one game away from being eliminated from bowl contention.

Josh Rosen's Lost UCLA Season As Much His Fault As Mora's

When the 2016 UCLA season started, it was obvious that something was wrong early for Josh Rosen. His deep balls were inaccurate as can be, and he made a habit of under throwing balls to receivers with two step leads on defenders. This issue continued on as the season wore down, and it later became obvious that the run game was a mess, and the line was one of the worst UCLA had seen in a while. 

Rosen maintained a cocky, arrogant persona through it all, and was even seen yelling at receivers for not catching passes that should never had been thrown in the first place. He was off. The whole offense was off. Kennedy Palamalu looks lost as the OC, and play calling has been largely garbage in the red zone. Despite all of that, Rosen had opportunities to lift those around him, and despite piling up meaningless yards between the 20's, he has been in full regression, specifically in the red zone.

Rosen then got hit against Arizona State on October 8th. It was not a necessarily hard hit, but the hit caused him to pull a groin muscle. At that point, it became obvious that backup Mike Fafaul was not prepared to play that night, which is befuddling in and of itself when your backup is not ready to go. This became a game that would be lost, and it should have been left at that.

Instead, with UCLA still somehow hanging around, but not really, Rosen decided to be a hero and get himself back into the game. That was a poor decision, as he was not healthy enough to go. He ran with an absolute limp, and as he rolled right on an attempted pass, he was hammered, this time severely, and landed on his throwing shoulder. The damage sustained during this injury, as it turned out, was season ending, as was found out today by local media in Los Angeles. 

Jim Mora, Kennedy Palamalu, and Marques Tuiasosopo all are to blame for making a bad call to bring Rosen back into a game that the Bruins were not going to win. The other culprit was Rosen himself, and somehow, nobody had the guts to tell him no. Rosen realized that nobody was going to say no, and pushed his way back into that game, and because he could not go at full speed, a bad play turned into further injury, and now, Mike Fafaul has to figure it out with no run game, and virtually no line. 

Rosen is an arrogant young man, and not always in a good way. He needs to learn his limits, but that may be too late, because this kind of injury may limit his abilities moving forward. He will need surgery, to say the least, and with a nerve injury, that is never a sure thing. His future, regarding how well he recovers, is more in question than anyone wants to say openly. It took weeks to even get anyone, Rosen and Mora included, to even admit the severity of the injury. 

At the end of the day, Mora and his coaching staff should have handled Rosen responsibly, and they did not. Rosen should never been put into a position to say whether he was healthy enough or not to play. He never should have had that say or that freedom. He was arrogant enough to think he was bigger than injury, and he is not. Mora and his staff were just stupid enough to let him believe that he was.
