Bilo's College Football PASS/FAIL Reports Week 6: Sun Belt

Sun Belt

PASS: Georgia State, Idaho, Arkansas State

Georgia State scored all 41 points in the 2^nd and 3^rd quarters in a 41-21 win over Texas State. It was the 1^st win of the year for the Panthers. Conner Manning passed for 2 TDs and rushed for another in the win. GSU averaged 5.3 yards per carry against the Bobcats defense.

Idaho jumped out to a 16-0 lead on the road, and then held on to beat UL-Monroe 34-31. Kendrick Trotter’s blocked punt return for a TD was the difference in the end for the Vandals, and it was their 1^st blocked punt return for a TD since 2011. Idaho won despite giving up 517 yards of offense.

Arkansas State picked up their first win of the season, beating Georgia Southern 27-26 on a late spectacular TD grab by Omar Bayless. The Red Wolves won despite committing 5 turnovers on the night.

FAIL: Texas State, UL-Monroe, Georgia Southern

Texas State has now lost 7 of their last 8 road games after a 41-21 drubbing against previously winless Georgia State. The Bobcats have now lost 3 of their last 4 games, and could not come back despite forcing 3 fumbles.

ULM was victimized by 3 INTs by QB Garett Smith, and the Warhawks also allowed a blocked punt for a TD to fall to 1-4 on the season.

Georgia Southern could not capitalize on 5 Arkansas State turnovers, and Matt Breida was limited to just 42 yards, forcing the Eagles to make 4 FGs on the night in a last second loss. 

Bilo's College Football PASS/FAIL Reports Week 6: SEC

SEC

PASS: Alabama, Texas A&M, Auburn, Kentucky, Georgia

Alabama scored 35 points by the half, and then cruised to a 49-30 win over Arkansas on the road. It was the 18^th straight win for the Tide. Jalen Hurts passed for 2 TDs and ran for 2 more in the win, and Tim Williams added a 23 yard fumble return for a score. Alabama has won 10 straight against ranked opponents. Minkah Fitzpatrick also tied a school record with 3 picks on the day, returning one for a TD.

Texas A&M jumped out to a decent lead early, and then had to fight to hang on, beating Tennessee 45-38 in 2 OTs. Trevor Knight passed for 2 TDs and ran for 3 more, and the Aggies recorded their first ever win against the Vols. The Aggies finished with 684 yards of offense, including 216 yards rushing by Trayveon Williams.

Auburn jumped out to a 35-0 lead at the half, and then held on for a 38-14 win over Mississippi StateKamryn Pettway led the way for Auburn with 169 yards rushing and 3 TDs, and the Tigers are now 2-1 in SEC play.

Kentucky picked up another must win game, as they jumped out to a 17-3 lead on Vanderbilt early, and then held on for a 20-13 win. The Wildcats rushed for 257 yards in the win, and the defense, which has been shelled this season, allowed just 282 yards total.

In a game moved to Sunday because of Hurricane Matthew, Georgia got 2 rushing TDs from Nick Chubb, who recorded his 1^st 100 yard effort since the opener, and the defense dominated in a 28-14 win over South Carolina in SEC East play. The Bulldogs rushed for 326 yards on the day.

FAIL: Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, South Carolina

Austin Allen was picked off 3 times, and Arkansas got jumped on early by Alabama, and then never recovered in their 17^th all-time loss to the Tide. The Arkansas defense was largely to blame for the loss, however, as the Razorbacks gave up 517 yards of offense.

Tennessee lost 5 fumbles, and a furious rally fell short in OT, as Tennessee lost to Texas A&M for the first time 45-38. Their lost fumbles were the most by a Vols team since 1996. The defense was a huge factor in the loss, as missed tackles plagued the defense throughout the game.

Mississippi State was plagued by 7 penalties and 3 turnovers in a 38-14 loss to Auburn, dropping the Bulldogs to just 1-2 in SEC play. The offense held the football for just over 26 minutes in a terrible effort, especially early on.

Vanderbilt was held to just 282 yards by Kentucky, and was just 3/12 on 3^rd down conversions in a loss to the Wildcats. The Commodores are now just 2-4 overall this season.

South Carolina committed 3 turnovers, and 2 more on downs, and allowed over 300 yards rushing to Georgia in a 28-14 loss to the Bulldogs that saw their record fall to just 2-4 under Will Muschamp.

Bilo's College Football PASS/FAIL Reports Week 6: PAC-12

PAC-12

PASS: USC, Washington, Washington State, Utah, Oregon State, Arizona State

USC held the football for the final 4:29 of the game, and are showing signs of life again after beating Colorado 21-17 at home. Sam Darnold survived 3 turnovers by tossing 3 TD passes on the day, and the Trojans rolled up 539 yards in the win.

Washington scored 21 points in the 1^st and 3^rd quarters, and destroyed Oregon 70-21 in Eugene. The Huskies finished just short of 700 yards on the day in total offense. Jake Browning passed for 304 yards and 6 TDs, and rushed for 2 more to score 8 for the day.

Washington State built a 14-3 lead at the half against Stanford and never looked back in a 42-16 drubbing of the Cardinal in Palo Alto. Luke Falk passed for 357 yards and 4 TDs, and the Cougars rolled up 458 yards of offense against the Stanford D.

Utah struggled in the first half, but came back strong in the second in a 36-23 win over Arizona in SLC. The win was the 100^th for Kyle Whittingham as coach of the Utes. Troy Williams was a bit erratic, but still managed to pass for a TD and rush for 2 more in the win.

Oregon State did something they have never really been good at in the last 35 years, they turned to the ground to pound out an attack that beat Cal, although the Beavers nearly handed the game away late. Ryan Nall rushed for 221 yards and 3 TDs on just  14 carries before leaving with an injury, and OSU rushed for a whopping 454 yards on the night in a 47-44 win despite allowing 17 points in the final 7 minutes to the Bears.

Arizona State held UCLA to -1 yards rushing, and knocked Josh Rosen out of the game twice in an uninspiring 23-20 win over the Bruins in Tempe. Although the offense was flat most of the night, the defense played their most solid game to date, and most of Josh Rosen’s 400 yards were largely wasted space.

FAIL: Colorado, Oregon, Stanford, Arizona, California, UCLA

Despite outscoring USC in the 2^nd half, Colorado could not get the football back late in the 4^th to come from behind to beat USC. Steven Montez was held to just 25 yards rushing, his lowest output of the season in the loss.

Oregon suffered one of their worst defeats in school history in a 70-21 crushing by Washington at home. The Ducks gave up 684 yards on the night, and also gave up 30 1^st downs to the Huskies. Oregon is also now 0-3 in PAC-12 play and is in dead last place in the North.

Stanford has now scored just 2 offensive TDs in their last 3 games after falling to Washington State at the Farm, 42-16. Stanford picked up just 296 yards of offense, and Christian McCaffery was held to just 35 yards rushing and was injured. The Cardinal are now averaging 43 points against after holding their first three opponents to 13 points or less.

Arizona is now 0-3 in PAC-12 play, and fell apart in the second half in their loss to Utah. Utah scored 10 of their points off of 3 Arizona turnovers on the night. Brandon Dawkins tossed 2 picks, and the defense gave up 475 yards to the Utes.

California averaged well over 400 yards per game passing, but was relegated to just 124 yards passing against the Beavers, and they themselves turned to a ground attack. A late rally almost stole a win for the Bears, but their faulty defense failed them again on a night that was quite winnable.

Josh Rosen was knocked out of the game once with a groin injury, and then was removed after an apparent arm/wrist injury, and UCLA never got on track offensively in a 23-20 loss to Arizona State that may have been the most boring contest of the day overall. UCLA’s O line is a mess, the coaching staff on offense is completely in disarray, and Jim Mora appears disjointed and disconnected. UCLA had the football on the 2 yard line in the 4^th quarter, and failed to score more than a FG, and sadly, I predicted on Twitter that this would be the outcome of that possession. 

Bilo's College Football PASS/FAIL Reports Week 6: Conference USA

Conference USA

PASS: UTSA, North Texas, FIU, Louisiana Tech, Old Dominion, Charlotte

UTSA exploded for 28 points in the 1^st quarter, and rolled over Southern Miss 55-32, the highest scoring output this season for the Roadrunners. Jalen Rhodes rushed for 165 yards on just 14 carries, and scored 3 TDs, averaging 11.8 yards per carry. Jarveon Williams also rushed for 122 yards and 2 more TDs in the win.

North Texas blew open a tight game in the second half, and beat Marshall 38-21 at home this week. UNT rolled up 458 yards, with 254 yards coming on the ground. UNT is now 2-1 in CUSA play under 1^st year coach Seth Littrell.

FIU is now 2-0 since firing Ron Turner after beating UTEP 35-21. The Panthers snapped a 7 game road losing streak, and struggling QB Alex McGough passed for 241 yards and 3 TDs, after having tossed just 2 TDs all season. FIU is now 2-0 in CUSA play.

Ryan Higgins passed for 4 TDs, and more importantly, no INTs, as Louisiana Tech held off a furious 4^th quarter rally to beat Western Kentucky 55-52. Carlos Henderson, returning from injury, caught 5 passes for 190 yards and 3 TDs, all in the 1^st half for the Bulldogs.

Jeremy Cox rushed for 162 yards, and Ray Lawry added 88 more, as Old Dominion cruised to a 36-16 win over U Mass in a non con game at home. Lawry tied former QB Thomas DiMarco with his 30^th career TD for ODU.

Charlotte beat FAU Sunday as a late 38 yard toss into the end zone was ruled incomplete on review, allowing the 49ers to escape with the win. Hasaan Klugh broke all his former high marks passing, as he tossed for 223 yards and 3 scores in the win for Charlotte.

FAIL: Southern Miss, Marshall, UTEP, Western Kentucky, FAU

Southern Miss, who has largely been the most disappointing team in CUSA this fall, turned the football over 3 times, and allowed UTSA to jump out to a 28 point 1^st quarter. The Eagles were outrushed by 160 yards in the loss.

Marshall is in a freefall at this point, and is now just 1-4 overall. The Herd, who are an offensive super power most seasons, picked up just 271 yards in their most recent loss to North Texas. The wheels are completely off the wagon at this point.

UTEP lost their 5^th straight game, and Aaron Jones rushed for just 73 yards in falling to FIU. The Miners also only converted 4/14 on 3^rd downs.

Western Kentucky scored 21 points in the 4^th quarter but their rally fell short in a 55-52 loss to Louisiana Tech. A late Mike White fumble cost the Hilltoppers, and offset a wonderful night for the QB.

FAU lost for the 5^th consecutive game this week, dropping a 28-23 game to Charlotte as a last ditch hail Mary was ruled incomplete with the receiver out of bounds. A 3 TD effort by RB Gregory Howell, Jr. was wasted in the loss, and Jason Driskell has now tossed INTs in 5 of 6 games, all to 1^st year defenders. 

Bilo's College Football PASS/FAIL Reports Week 6: Mountain West

Mountain West

PASS: Wyoming, Hawaii, Nevada, Colorado State, San Diego State, Boise State

Josh Allen passed for 3 TDs, and Wyoming has finally come around during the Craig Bohl era, as the Cowboys are now 2-0 in MWC play this season. Wyoming was plus 3 in turnovers, and stopped the Air Force rushing attack.

Hawaii used a 10-0 4^th quarter to pull away from San Jose State on the road, and the Rainbows have now won 3 of their last 4 to even up at 3-3. Dru Brown passed for 287 yards and 2 TDs, and rushed for another in the win.

Nevada had to rally, but they did exactly that in a 27-22 win over Fresno State. Wyatt Demps caught 3 TD passes in the win, as the Pack snapped a losing streak and evened up at 3-3.

Colorado State looked like they were falling again this week, but they woke up after trailing 24-10 to shut Utah State down after the half, and the Rams pulled off a 31-24 win. Izzy Mathews rushed for the game tying score, and then ran for the go ahead for the Rams, who are now 3-3.

San Diego State bounced back from a head scratching loss to South Alabama last week to frustrate UNLV 26-7 at home. Donnel Pumphery rushed for 141 yards and a score, and Rashaad Penny picked up 160 yards and scored twice for the Aztecs.
Boise State scored 42 consecutive points on the way to a 49-21 win over New Mexico on the rod Friday night. Cedrick Wilson and Thomas Sperbeck both caught 9 passes for the Broncos in the easy MWC win. 

FAIL: Air Force, San Jose State, Fresno State, Utah State, UNLV, New Mexico

Air Force turned the ball over 3 times, and was held to just 149 yards rushing. Nate Romine tossed 3 picks after a huge week against Navy in the air last week.

San Jose State gave up 431 yards to Hawaii in a 34-17 loss, and the season is completely lost for the Spartans. SJSU is barreling into a losing season, and Ron Caragher could be gone by the end of the season. Spartans are just lost.

Fresno State continues to spiral out of control, and are now just 1-5. Tim DeRuyter is looking like he is on his way out. The Bulldogs had 452 yards of offense, and yet only had 22 points to show for it.

Utah State completely collapsed after the half, blowing a 24-10 lead against Colorado State to lose. USU gained 461 yards yet struggled to score once again. The Matt Wells star is diminishing quickly.

UNLV passed for only 9 yards, and ended with just 122 yards total in a 26-7 loss to San Diego State on the road. A season where there was limited hope of going to a bowl is slowly starting to spiral away for the young Rebels, who punted 8 times on the night. The good news is that UNLV did not commit a penalty. There’s your silver lining. 
New Mexico had issues in pass coverage all night, and allowed Boise State to run away from them on Friday night. Lamar Jordan threw his 1st TD pass of the year, and if the Lobos want to start winning, they will have to ditch their triple option approach and start playing modern football. Bob Davie is squarely on the hot seat now.

PASS: BYU

Jamaal Williams rushed for 163 yards and 3 TDs, as BYU scored 21 points in the 4^th quarter to pull away from Michigan State in East Lansing. Williams now has 9 TDs in the last two games for the Cougars.

FAIL: Notre Dame, Army, U Mass

The Irish had no answers for the weather in Raleigh, and had a punt blocked and returned for a TD in a 10-3 loss that drops the Irish to just 2-4 this season.

Army committed 3 turnovers, and rushed for just 165 yards in a 13-6 loss to Duke on the road. After starting 3-0, Army has now dropped 2 straight against ACC opponents.

U Mass used four different QBs in a 36-16 loss to Old Dominion, and the Minutemen held the ball for just 23 minutes in the loss.

PASS: Florida State, Virginia Tech, NC State, Pittsburgh, Duke, Wake Forest, Clemson

Florida State came back from 10 down, and blocked a PAT to beat Miami 20-19. DeAndre Francois passed for 234 yards with 2 scores, and engineered the go ahead drive for the Seminoles.

It was a terrible passing game by Virginia Tech QB Jerod Evans, but he still managed 2 TD passes and a rushing TD on just 71 yards passing, and the defense crushed North Carolina in a 34-3 win for the Hokies, their 2^nd largest win over a ranked opponent in school history.

NC State held on defensively, and returned a blocked punt for a TD in a hurricane plagued football game, and NC State beat Notre Dame 10-3. Ryan Finley was held to just 27 yards passing, largely due to the weather.

Chris Blewitt hit a FG as time expired, and Pitt escaped with a 37-34 shootout win over Georgia Tech. Nathan Peterman has not tossed a pick for 3 straight games now.

Deondre Singleton picked up a pick and a fumble recovery, and Duke survived a terrible day on offense to hold off Army 13-6 at home.

Cade Carney rushed for a TD, and Marquel Lee recorded 15 tackles, including 5.5 TFLs as Wake Forest stone walled the Syracuse offense in a 28-9 win.

Deshaun Watson survived an average passing completion day to pass for 4 TDs, and Clemson scored 21 in the first and again in the fourth to crush Boston College on the road 56-10.

FAIL: Miami, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Syracuse

Miami blows a 10 point lead in the 4^th quarter, and then gets a PAT blocked to tie the game and go into OT. Miami also collapsed on offense after a fast start, and was held to just 276 yards in the loss to Florida State.

UNC is now just 3-9 against ranked opponents under Larry Fedora, and the ragingly inconsistent Tar Heels laid a major egg at home against Virginia Tech in a 34-3 loss at home after beating Florida State just a week ago.

Georgia Tech has now dropped 3 straight games after opening the season 3-0. This is classic Paul Johnson. If the losses continue, he may be on the hot seat.

Eric Dungy failed to pass for a TD for the 1^st time this season, and Syracuse was largely neutralized in a 28-9 loss to Wake Forest.

BC dropped their 6^th straight game to Clemson, and the Eagles gave up 3 plays of 50 yards or more in the 2^nd quarter in a crushing home loss to the Tigers. BC has lost 8 of 9 to Clemson as well.

PASS: Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Purdue

Ohio State survived a bad day by JT Barrett, and rushed for 290 yards and 4 TDs as a team to pull away from upset minded Indiana in a 38-17 win in Columbus. The Buckeyes have still not allowed a rushing TD this season, the only team in FBS football to claim that mark.

Michigan allowed just 22 total yards and no 1^st downs until the 4^th quarter, and beat Rutgers 78-0 on the road in Big 10 play. It was the single largest win by Michigan since beating Chicago 85-0 in 1939. Michigan outgained Rutgers 600-39 in total yards.

Penn State bounced back from some disappointing football this season to beat previously unbeaten Maryland 38-14 at home. Trace McSorley passed for 2 scores and ran for another in the win for the Nittany Lions.

David Blough passed for one score and ran for another, and Purdue won on a FG in OT over Illinois in the Big 10 version of the Toilet Bowl. Brian Lankford-Johnson recorded his 1^st 100 yard game at Purdue.

FAIL: Indiana, Rutgers, Iowa, Minnesota, Maryland, Illinois, Michigan State

Indiana managed just 99 yards rushing on 40 carries, and Ohio State never had any doubt as the Hoosiers fell 38-17. Indiana finished well below their total offense average with just 261 yards.

Rutgers was shut out for the 2^nd straight week, and has given up 136 points the last two weeks in that process. The Scarlet Knights finished with just 39 yards.

Maryland was shut out in the second half on the road in their 38-14 loss to Penn State. Perry Hills and Tyrell Pigrome were both ineffective in the loss, the first under new coach DJ Durkin.

Illinois fumbled the ball away in the 1^st OT, and the Illini fell to Purdue, who scored 7 points last week, 34-31. The Illini committed 12 penalties on the game for 125 yards on the day.

PASS: Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas State

DeDe Westbrook caught 12 passes for 232 yards and Oklahoma set a pace that Texas could not keep up with in the second half on the way to a 45- 40 win in Dallas. Despite 4 turnovers on the day, the Sooners only gave up 3 points off of those turnovers. OU picked up 273 yards in the 3^rd quarter alone.

Oklahoma State did just enough to earn a pass this week, scoring 17 points in the final quarter to come back from a near disastrous loss to Iowa State. Mason Rudolph passed for 351 yards and 4 scores, and James Washington caught 8 passes for 152 yards and 2 of those scores on the way to the win.

Kansas State scored 13 points in the final quarter, and Texas Tech did not get the game within one score until 0:05 left, and held off Texas Tech despite getting no real star performances on offense. It was a must win game for the Wildcats to keep from falling to 0-2 in Big 12 play.

FAIL: Texas, TCU, Kansas, Iowa State, Texas Tech

Texas scored just 3 points off of 4 turnovers, and the defense, now run by coach Charlie Strong gave up 273 yards in the 3^rd quarter alone. The Longhorn defense has been abysmal all season, and the cure is nowhere in sight. The Horns also gave up 214 yards to Samaje Perine, who had been off to a slow start in 2016.

Iowa State collapsed late for the 2^nd straight week in a 38-31 loss to Oklahoma State that the Cyclones controlled for 3 quarters. The Cyclones lost despite picking up 26 1^st downs on the day, compared to just 20 for OSU.

TCU needed to outscore Kansas 10-0 to escape from a dead panned performance on the road against hapless Kansas, 24-23. TCU committed 4 turnovers on the game, matched only by the ineptitude of Kansas, who also turned it over 4 times. TCU held the football for just under 25 minutes on the day.

As for Kansas, Ryan Willis tossed 3 picks, and the Jayhawks collapsed in the 4^th quarter in the loss. Kansas has now lost 14 consecutive games in Big 12 play. Matthew Wyman missed a 54 yard FG with 1:21 left that would have pulled the upset.

Texas Tech collapsed in the 4^th quarter (a repetitive tale in Big 12 play) and gave up 13 points to allow Kansas State to pull away. It would seem that the annual October/November collapse has begun in Lubbock.

PASS: Ohio, Toledo, Akron, Kent State, Central Michigan, Western Michigan

Ohio used 4 turnovers, and played a balanced game in narrowly holding off Bowling Green in MAC play. The Bobcats used a 20 point 2^nd quarter to keep the pace even in the win.

Toledo was neck and neck with Eastern Michigan at the half, but pulled away in the 2^nd half on the way to a 35-20 win. Logan Woodside passed for 4 TDs, and Toledo has won 10 straight over the Eagles.

Tra’Von Chapman passed for 3 TDs, and rushed for another, as Akron pulled away to beat Miami (Ohio) in MAC play, 35-13. The Zips have now won 6 straight MAC contests.

Kent State finally showed some signs of life this week, beating Buffalo 44-20 on the road. QB Nick Holley did his damage on the ground, rushing for 224 yards and 4 TDs in the win for the Golden Flashes.

Central Michigan rested on a 14 point 2^nd quarter, and managed to hold off Ball State 24-21 in MAC play. Cooper Rush passed for 270 yards and is now just 2 TDs away from tying for the all-time MAC TD passing record. The Chippewas scored a late TD on defense to hold off the Cardinals.

Western Michigan is now 6-0 for the first time since 1945 after beating Northern Illinois 45-20 today. WMU snapped a 7 game losing streak to NIU, and Corey Davis caught 6 passes for 122 yards and 2 TDs, and is the leading receiver in FBS play this season, and holds the school record for TD receptions with 40.

FAIL: Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Buffalo, Ball State, Northern Illinois

Bowling Green had a 4 game winning streak against Ohio snapped in their loss to the Bobcats. James Morgan had has 2 TD passes made irrelevant by tossing 3 picks in the loss.

Eastern Michigan was held to just 62 yards rushing, and allowed 220 yards on the ground to Toledo, and a close game got away from them late in their loss to Toledo. EMU has only won 11 times all-time against the Rockets.

Miami gave up 14 points off turnovers, rolled up only 260 yards, and turned the ball over 3 times in a loss to Akron. Miami was forced to start a freshman at QB due to injury, and it did not go well.

Buffalo gave up 430 yards to previously lifeless Kent State, and 341 of those came on the ground in a 24 point loss to the hapless Golden Flashes. The Bulls gave up 7.6 yards per carry on the day.

Ball State gave up 422 yards, and rolled up 3360 of their own, and gave up a late defensive TD to CMU to fall short today, 24-21. The Cardinals ran 69 plays on the day.

Anthony Maddie tossed a pair of interceptions, and NIU fell to just 1-5 on the season after a 45-30 loss to WMU that snapped a 7 game winning streak against the Broncos. It’s the first time that former Husky and WMU coach PJ Fleck has beaten his former school.
