That time of year has descended upon us once again, as with the close out of the last full weekend of the college football season has come and gone, and it is time for me to start selecting my candidates for my FBS, FCS, and D2 positional players of the year. My first release this year is my quarter finalist list for FBS Quarterbacks. Bilo's College Football Conference Title Game Previews (Friday Games)

The last full season of college football has been played for the 2016 season, and we are on to Conference Championship weekend, where some very odd things have occurred. Here is my breakdown on what is coming up this week:

Friday

PAC-12: Colorado (10-2) vs. Washington (11-1)
Colorado blows into the conference title game on a six game winning streak, and one thing can be said about the Buffs, and that is they are doing it without playing their best football week in and week out. Special teams were a mess in their South clinching 27-22 win over Utah, and the offense was not always on par. With that said, the Buffs have been playing their best defense in years, and that has carried them a long way.
Washington has just one loss to USC, and are probably glad not to be playing the Trojans again in this title match. Colorado could make things rough for QB Jake Browning if they follow the USC game plan against him, which Washington State certainly did not in the Apple Cup, which the Huskies won 45-17 in Pullman.
Projection: Washington gets into the national playoff with a win here, and they do seem to have the deeper roster, but Colorado is a tough out, and has some serious talent as well. I still see Washington as having just enough to get this done this week.

MAC: Western Michigan (12-0) vs. Ohio (8-4)
The story here is PJ Fleck and his exciting Western Michigan squad, which has been fairly dominant all season long. The most narrow margin of victory all season was the opener against Northwestern, a one point win. Since then, the most narrow margin of victory was 14 against Eastern Michigan...in October. WMU is 12-0, and rolling off of a 55-35 win over Toledo, their toughest competition all season.
Ohio has not been as tough lately, and is coming off of a sluggish 9-3 win over Akron in the regular season finale. The Bobcats had lost to Central Michigan the week before, and are limping into this title match Friday night.
Projection: Western Michigan is still streaking and may be getting better with each snap this season, and has one of the best pass/catch combos in the nation on Zach Terrell and Corey Davis. With Ohio struggling entering this game, I don't see very high chances of a Bobcat upset here.
Western Michigan to the Cotton Bowl, Ohio to Bahamas (tentative)

Next...Saturday Conference Title Game Preview

As the Coaching Carousel Turns: 11/27/16

While some were expecting Sunday, bloody Sunday to fall this morning, it has been a rather quiet day on the coaching news front, with only 3 changes being made, and all of those coming at G5 programs in Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference. No hires were made so far today, but expect a mass of movement come Monday. By this time tomorrow, some ver big jobs may be available. Here is what is going on as of this moment today, and a little of what to watch for moving into the week...


LSU
LSU bungles the Jimbo Fisher and Tom Herman moves, and ended up doing what they were not likely to do a week or so ago, and they promoted Ed Orgeron to the full time job. LSu tightened their pockets, and in doing so lost out on every outside candidate that they wanted to do business with, and would not meet a $6 million per year demand from Tom Herman. LSU also figured they would lose out on Herman to Texas, and bailed on him without a fight.
Orgeron now has to make good on hiring an elite OC, namely one Lane Kiffin, but as of tonight, Kiffin has had no conversations with Nick Saban about going anywhere. Stay tuned on this one.

Texas
Not one member of Charlie Strong's staff will be retained by new head coach Tom Herman, according to multiple reports. Herman is already building his Longhorn staff, and 3 members of his Houston staff are coming along. No word yet on DC Todd Orlando. who is staying behind to coach the Cougars in their bowl game.

Oregon
AD Rob Mullens has a meeting set with Mark Helfrich "later this week", but will not confirm exactly when. It was thought last night that a meeting would occur today, but both sides pushed the meeting off. Mullens will be evaluating the entire program today and tomorrow, and if everything I am seeing serves correctly, will meet with Helfrich later tomorrow night or Tuesday. Do not expect this situation to carry on long, as this is just moevment to get the buyout of $11.6 million in place.
Expect Oregon to look closely at Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy and UCF coach and former Duck OC Scott Frost in the early stages. They will likely reach out to Chip Kelly to return, but that is unlikely, and that conversation has probably already happened.

Purdue
The Boilermakers were pushing to make a hire by the end of this weekend, but by 8PM local time today (Sunday), no hire has been made. Purdue would love to move forward on PJ Fleck of Western Michigan, but according to sources, he would rather concentrate on the continuation of the Bronco's undefeated season than talk with Purdue, or anyone else right now. Les Miles, Greg Olson, and Troy Calhoun are all backup options, but any one of those candidates is a secondary choice to Fleck, and he may not even want the job.

Notre Dame
Despite serious denials by Brian Kelly, several sources are still claiming that he has reached out elsewhere to seek out a head coaching job that is not Notre Dame. A couple of names that have surfaced if Kelly were to leave the Irish are PJ Fleck and Mike Gundy. Stay tuned on this situation, as it is seriously fluid right now, and the choice may still not be Kelly's to make, as he has made a mess out of his situation.

San Jose State
As I have been calling for weeks now on this very site, Ron Caragher has been dismissed as head coach of the Spartans. Possible early candidates could be Cal Poly coach Tim Walsh and the Spartans could also hit the U. San Diego well again with Dale Lindsey, but the Toreros beat Cal Poly in the FCS playoffs yesterday. Beau Baldwin of Eastern Washington could also come into play here, so once again, stay tuned.

Nevada
Brian Polian is out at Nevada after four seasons. This, again, was not much of a shocker to me, as I have been saying here that his seat has gotten hotter every week. Even the blowout win over UNLV in Vegas yesterday was not enough to convince the administration to save him. Again, Beau Baldwin of Eastern Washington could be in play in Reno as well as San Jose, so stay tuned here.

Florida Atlantic
Again, as was called for weeks on this site, Charlie Partridge is out with the Owls. Partridge won just 9 games in 3 years at FAU. No early candidates have been mentioned yet, but one name that has popped up on the periphery is current Alabama assistant and former FIU coach Mario Cristobal. James Madison and former Citadel coach Mike Houston could come into play here as well. Once again, stay tuned.

Georgia State
A new name has popped up on the Georgia State radar, and that would be Georgia DC Mel Tucker. This search seems to be dragging just a bit, with absolutely zero serious buzz happening on a national level. Again, stay tuned.

NC State
Dave Doeren saved himself by beating North Carolina this weekend, and will be returning for the 2017 season, but expectations will be high. Expect his to be one of the hotter seats in the nation entering the season next fall.

UCLA
Kennedy Polamalu, one of the worst hires in UCLA football history, is out as OC for the Bruins. The move was made today after UCLA returned home from a 36-10 thrashing at the hands of California last night. UCLA finished 96th in the nation in total offense in 2016, and the Bruins flailed to a 4-8 finish, going just 2-7 in PAC-12 play after being a favorite to win the South this season. Jim Mora possibly used Polamalu as a scape goat to save his own job, as he has come under immense pressure to make changes or resign himself.

Florida State
Jimbo Fisher can expect a serious contract extension in the coming days that will make it all but impossible for him to run out on his deal to coach elsewhere. Whatever he is being offered at LSU is likely to be in the 6-7 million dollar range or more.

As the Coaching Carousel Turns: 11/25/16 Evening Update

It's midnight on the East Coast, but that does not mean that the drama that occurs on the carousel has come to a stop for the day...

LSU
It has been reported that LSU is down to Tom Herman, or Ed Orgeron in a shocking move. It appears that LSU could not ring up any other top tier candidates, and instead of giving it another week to peculate, they will make a move on either Herman or Orgeron by the end of this weekend. My money is on retaining Orgeron at this point, something that seemed highly unlikely just one week ago. It would seem that the Tigers put all of their eggs in the Jimbo Fisher basket, and they swung hard and missed, leaving them short on options now.

Texas
As I had said about a week ago, Texas may not be as all in on Tom Herman as originally thought. They are making overtures to Jim Harbaugh, Jimbo Fisher, and Dabo Swinney tonight to see if any of them have any interest in the job. It would appear that the money bag people in Austin are not all sold on Herman as the guy at this hour, but that could change again by morning. Charlie Strong will either resign or be fired tomorrow morning after a meeting with the president and AD.
Texas will miss on Harbaugh and Fisher, and that is basically a certainty at this point, leaving Swinney, someone with ties to the state, as the lead guy they intend to hunt for now. I doubt very much that he leaves Clemson, but Texas, as they tend to do, will go all in on this move.

Oregon
Phil Knight has already met with Tom Herman, but he prefers other jobs, according to reports tonight. Knight is still interested in paying top dollar for a coach that he believes can win a national title at Oregon. With that news in place, it would appear that a decision has already been reached, and that Helfrich will be let go after the Oregon State game, win or lose.

Arkansas
Bret Bielema was already being asked about staff changes after the Razorbacks stumbled to a 7-5 finish after falling to Missouri today 28-24. Bielema has said that he will refuse to make changes, so Bielema getting fired at this point certainly is a possibility. Stay tuned on this one, as we could have news as early as tomorrow or Sunday if a move is to be made here.

As the Coaching Carousel Turns: Thanksgiving Holiday Edition 2016

Here is all of the latest on any job postings that there is news about...

LSU
Jimbo Fisher is not leaving Florida State as of today, Friday, November 25th. He has agreed to stay at FSU and will likely see some sort of new extension out of the deal that will likely keep him at Florida State for more than the foreseeable future.
With Fisher out of the picture, all attention has turned to Houston coach Tom Herman, who's status goes up and down more than a roller coaster as of late. Herman is back in the picture, but there is still a strong chance that Herman may stay at Houston, as I will explain below. If Herman does not leave Houston for LSU, it is back to square one for LSU, as Joe Alleva had talks with interim coach Ed Orgeron today, as Orgeron is the choice of the current players. Orgeron has told Alleva that he intends to go after Lane Kiffin for OC if he indeed gets the job.
Don't count out Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy at this point either, as he would likely meet with LSU after the Bedlam game next week, if LSU does not jump early on a decision.

Houston
Tom Herman is hot again after a cooling down period over the last couple of weeks, but his red hot status may be nothing more than media hype right now. He is still in demand, but reports state that nobody other than Baylor has asked for access to Herman. Herman would be unlikely to take the Baylor job if Texas or LSU do not come calling, and the Houston administration is trying to work out a new extension that would raise Herman above his already high G5 salary of $3.5 million by more than a million dollars per season over the current deal. The Cougars are very much in the race to retain his services, and Herman denied reports linking him currently to Texas or LSU, which substantiates other reports stating the same.

Baylor
Reports that Baylor has already hired SMU coach Chad Morris are highly erroneous, according to multiple reports. Morris has not been offered the job, and Mack Rhoades still wants to speak with Herman. It would seem that the entire Baylor focus right now is down to Morris and Herman, and no other candidates have been named at this point.

Purdue
After calling himself out of the Purdue search weeks ago, Brock Spack, Illinois state head coach and former Purdue assistant under Joe Tiller, was indeed interviewed this week. It would seem that any deal with Les Miles, Greg Olson, or Troy Calhoun has fallen through, and reports that Purdue could hire a coach as soon as this weekend may have fallen through with the late interview added on just this week. That is not a move associated with a school ready to lock down a coach. It would seem from a distance that Purdue is flailing blindly yet again.

Texas
If Texas swings and misses on Tom Herman, it would seem that there is no other candidate that has been considered to replace Charlie Strong. There is mutual interest, but nothing is set in stone for Herman, as the national job market could really open up this coming week, as a few more high profile, big money jobs could open.

Notre Dame
Rumors are swirling that if the Irish do not play competitively against USC this weekend, that Brian Kelly could be out the door as early as Sunday or Monday morning. Kelly was scheduled to return in 2017, but the latest issue of NCAA violations and vacated wins may have been the final straw for Kelly with the Irish.

Oregon
There is dead silence in Eugene in regards to Mark Helfrich, who's Oregon Ducks will finish at either 5-7 or 4-8 depending on the Oregon State Civil War outcome. The silence is bad because there is a lack of any kind of support, which signals that Helfrich could be out after the Oregon State game either way. Tom Herman would be on the Duck radar if the job opens.

UL-Lafayette
Scott Farmer has resigned as AD this week, which puts the position of Mark Hudspeth in a bad spot. The Cajuns are currently just 4-6, and play Arkansas State this week, which if lost, would make ULL ineligible for bowl consideration without a waver. Hudspeth's star has been dimming the last couple of seasons, and if they finished at 4-8, his ouster would not be shocking at this point. Stay tuned.

Delaware
After a pool of six candidates was released by Delaware earlier this week, the best opening in FCS football could lead to a seventh candidate, with Mike DeBord joining the pool of possible candidates. Delaware could make a move as early as next week, with Mike London and Pete Lembo being the highest profile candidates with the most FCS success as head coaches.

Presbyterian
The Blue Hose stayed in house to hire a new football coach this week, hiring Tommy Spangler, who was serving as DC. Spangler was head coach at PC from 2001-06, and posted 42 wins during that time.

Week 13 Games of the Week

Only four divisions in all of FBS football are secured heading into the final full week of the 2016 season. Here are the games that matter for the upcoming week:

AAC
UCF (6-5) at USF (9-2), East Carolina (3-8) at Temple (8-3)
USF needs this win and a Temple loss to steal the AAC East title for a shot to play Navy in the conference title game. The problem is that Temple plays East Carolina, and should be heavily favored.

ACC
NC State (5-6) at North Carolina (8-3), Virginia (2-9) at Virginia Tech (8-3)
UNC has been severely inconsistent this season, and this seems like a trap game. The Tar Heels need a win coupled with a Virginia Tech loss to play against Clemson in the ACC title game. The problem here is that Virginia Tech has a cupcake of a game coming up against Virginia.

Big 10
Michigan (10-1) at Ohio State (10-1), Michigan State (3-8) at Penn State (9-2)
This game not only has Big 10 East title aspirations, the winner likely goes on to play in a national semifinal. If Ohio State wins, however, neither team wins the division, but Ohio State could still play in the playoff. Weird world we live in.
Penn State will be scoreboard watching as they hit warm ups at home prior to taking on Michigan State. All of State College will be pulling for the Buckeyes.

Nebraska (9-2) at Iowa (7-4), Minnesota (8-3) at Wisconsin (9-2)
Nebraska has a huge trap game this week heading into Iowa City. The Huskers need a win, coupled with a Wisconsin loss to the Gophers to make the Big 10 title game as the West champ. All Wisconsin has to do is beat Minnesota, and they get in.

Conference USA
Old Dominion (8-3) at FIU (4-7), Western Kentucky (8-3) at Marshall (3-8)
Both ODU and WKU are tied in the CUSA East, with WKU holding the tie breaker. If WKU beats Marshall on the road, they are in. If they fall, and ODU wins at FIU, the Monarchs are in. Both teams should win this week, which sends the Hilltoppers to the CUSA title game against a waiting Louisiana Tech.

MAC
Ball State (4-7) at Miami (Ohio) (5-6), Ohio (7-4) at Akron (5-6)
If Miami (Ohio) can win, they become bowl eligible. If they win, and Ohio falls to Akron, which could happen, Miami strangely wins the MAC East, which was inconceivable in August. Ohio has been stumbling towards the finish line, and Akron needs this win to become bowl eligible themselves. This is a strange division.

Toledo (9-2) at Western Michigan (11-0)
The Broncos have been the darlings of college football this season, and are one of only two unbeatens left in the nation. SOS be damned, this team is solid. What would be tragic for them would be to get this far and drop the ball against a very tough Toledo team. Expect a war here on Friday night. This is for the MAC West title.

Mountain West
Boise State (10-1) at Air Force (8-3), Wyoming (8-3) at New Mexico (7-4)
The Broncos are having an amazing season, yet they do not control their own destiny in the Mountain Division race. That distinction belongs to Wyoming, a Cinderella story that keeps on growing. If the Cowboys beat New Mexico, they are headed to the MWC title game for a rematch against San Diego State, who the Cowboys just beat last weekend. If Boise State wins, and Wyoming loses to a rock solid New Mexico club, Boise State gets back into the title game. New Mexico blew their shot to have more at stake by getting clubbed by Colorado State last weekend.

PAC-12
Washington (10-1) at Washington State (8-3)
This Friday afternoon thriller will be one of the most important Apple Cup games ever played. The winner wins the North, and if it is Washington, they could be in the national semifinal. If Washington State wins, it could cap one of the most up and down seasons in recent memory for the Cougars.

Utah (8-3) at Colorado (9-2)
Colorado was a team on the verge of being very good after the 2015 season ended. Nobody realized it could be this good. Colorado wins the South with a win over a reeling Utah club that blew their shot at a division title by losing to Oregon last weekend. Utah is now relegated to spoiler, and Colorado has to have their eyes wide open here.

SEC
Auburn (8-3) at Alabama (11-0)
The divisions have been won in the SEC, and Bama will take on Florida in the SEC title game, but this game is more aligned with the playoffs, as Alabama has to win to lock their spot down. Auburn would more than love to ruin the Tide run this week in the Iron Bowl, and they seem to be the team that could do it.

Sun Belt
Arkansas State (6-4) at UL-Lafayette (4-6), Troy (8-2) at Texas State (2-8)
Arkansas State, despite a run that has seen wins over Troy and Appalachian State, still needs to win out in Sun Belt play to lock down the conference title. Both the Red Wolves and Troy have games against bad teams this week, but nobody can sleep in this chase. If Arkansas State wins, and Troy somehow loses, Arkansas State could lock it all up. I don't see that happening this week.
