MVP Offense: WR Robert Davis
Despite the rest of the team being fairly terrible in 2016 overall, Robert Davis has been a rock at GSU for his entire career. Davis caught 67 passes in 2016, four more than in 2015. He posted 968 yards and five scores, and averaged 14.45 yards per reception, and caught a season high nine passes three times during the season. Georgia State went 1-2 in games in which he caught nine balls.
MVP Defense: LB Michael Shaw
The Sophomore LB finished third on the team with 76 tackles in 2016, and led the team with 12 TFLs. Shaw also led the team with three sacks on a unit that allowed 26.6 points per game, an improvement of almost 17 points per game since 2014.
Others of Note
Junior QB Connor Manning played in 10 games, and passed for 2648 yards for the season with 16 TDs and 13 INTs. He averaged 37.3 attempts per gae, and completed just 55.5% of those attempts.
The Panthers were held to just 87.67 yards rushing per game, which had them finishing only ahead of UCLA and Texas State.
Five total receivers finished with 20 or more receptions.
GSU allowed just eight receiving scores in 2016, but gave up 25 rushing scores.
The Panthers gave up 206.75 yards rushing per game.
Senior LB Alonzo McGee led the team with 97 tackles, and senior DB Bobby Baker finished with 82.
The Panthers were decimated in the tackling efficiency area. They only forced 54.33 per game, and were forced to make 78.33 tackles per game. This was one of the worst dficits in the nation in this area.
GSU forced just nine QB hurries all season, but only nine were forced against them.
The Panthers had seven kicks blocked against them in 2016.
As a team, GSU finished making just nine of 17 FG attempts, and averaged just 39 yards per punt.
Best Win: Georgia Southern
The Panthers did not defeat an FBS team with a winning record in 2016, but the win ovr Georgia Southern took some sting off of the season. A coaching change was made just two weeks later.
Worst Loss: Ball State, UL Monroe
The quality of losses was not great for GSU, as Ball State and ULM were both under .500 for the season. The Ball State loss early was an indicator of nightmares to come once Sun Belt play began, and it was evident that a coaching change would be needed.
2017 Non Conference Schedule: 8/31 Tennessee State, 9/16 at Penn State, 9/23 at Charlotte, 9/30 Memphis
The Panthers should handle Tennessee State in non con play in the opener, and I would give the Panthers even odds against Charlotte. Heavy losses will come against Penn State and Memphis.
