MVP Offense: None
The Bobcats were one of the lowest scoring teams in the nation in 2016, averaging 18.6 points per game. That ranked them 124th out of 128 teams, and the Bobcats were the 128th ranked team in rushing. That does not bode well for finding any standouts on offense.
MVP Defense: LB Bryan London
The Bobcats had to look to a freshman to take the reins on a defense that gave up a disaster like 41.1 points per game. The Bobcats allowed 40 or more points nine times in 12 games.
London was a highlight, however, as he led the team with 141 tackles (11.75 per game) and 8.5 TFLs. He did get some help in the way of fellow LB Gabe Loyd, who finished with 102 tackles in 12 games. 83 of London's tackles were solo jobs.
Others of Note
Senior QB Tyler Jones ended his career on a low note, as he passed for 11 TDs against 14 INTs. He averaged 198.7 yards passing per game, but did complete 64.4% of his passes.
Stedman Mayberry finished with 593 yards rushing, which was over half of the final total of just 989 yards for the entire team.
Six receivers finished with 20 or more receptions, but nobody totaled over 500 yards.
The Bobcats were forced to make 80.75 tackles per game, while only forcing 70.83. That being said, only three defenders finished with 50 or more, with Loyd and London going for over 100 each.
The offense allowed 105 TFLs against for a total loss of 460 yards.
TSU QBs were sacked 44 times. The defense recorded just nine.
QBs had 33 passes defended, while the defense knocked away just 22.
The Bobcats were penalized 6.8 times per game, but were penalized on average 7.5 times per game at home.
The Bobcats attempted just 10 FGs all season, making just seven.
The team averaged just ovr 16 yards per kick return, a miserably low number.
The team converted on just 31% OF 3rd downs.
Best Win: Ohio
The Bobcats started the 2016 season with this gritty shootout win over an Ohio team that won a division in the MAC. This would be one of only two games in which the Bobcats would score 21 or more points all season long.
Worst Loss: New Mexico State
The Bobcats fell to the Aggies by 40 points in the third to last weekend of the season, and would be an indicator of how this team just basically gave up in the final month and a half of the year. The Bobcats finished the season on an 0-8 run, and would not scores more than 14 points in any game during the last six weeks of that failing run. This was a bottoming out point.
2017 Non Conference Schedule: 9/2 Houston Baptist, 9/9 at Colorado, 9/23 UTSA, 9/30 at Wyoming
Everett Withers came off of a short, but successful stay at James Madison to take over what could only be described as a complete train wreck in 2016. He has his work cut out. The Bobcats will only be favored against Houston Baptist in this lineup, as the Huskies are a lower tier FCS program. Games against Colorado and Wyoming should be absolute losses. It is great to see the rivalry with UTSA being reignited, but I would not give the Bobcats even odds there either.
