MVP Offense: RB Jalin Moore, RB Marcus Cox
The strength of the Appalachian State offense was the run game, and the Mountaineers managed to run for 250.92 yards per game in 2016.
Jalin Moore led the team with 1402 yards rushing as a sophomore. He averaged 5.92 yards per carry and scored 10 times on the season. He averaged 17.56 carries per game. Moore carried 39 times against Akron for a season high 257 yards and two scores in a 45-38 win over the Zips, and eclipsed 100 yards rushing eight times.
Cox was the primary star back heading into the season, but some injury issues opened the door for Moore. Cox still managed an impressive array of totals in nine games played. He ran for 1015 yards and nine scores, averaging 112.78 yards rushing per game on 18.23 carries per game. Cox had a season high 153 yards and three TDs in a win over UL-Monroe, and posted seven games of 100 yards or more. He averaged 6.42 yards per carry.
MVP Defense: DB Clifton Duck, DL Antonious Sims
Duck, a freshman, had an amazing debut for the Mountaineers. He led the team with five INTs, one of which was returned for a score. He finished with 57 tackles, and logged 8 total PBUs.
Sims was a major facotr up front for App State, as he finished with 33 tackles, and 12 TFLs. Sims led the team with seven sacks, two PBUs, and four QB hurries.
Others of Note
Taylor Lamb, had a decent, but not great season at QB, and ended up being more of a game manager than a star. He passed for 175.5 yards per game, and tossed 15 TDs to eight INTs. Lamb added 505 yards rushing and eight more scores on the ground.
Only three receivers caught 20 or more passes in 2016.
LB Eric Boggs led the Mountaineers with 98 tackles.
Senior LB Kennan Gilchrist recorded 11 TFLs, and had 89 tackles overall.
The defense forced just two fumbles all season. The offense fumbled just five times.
ASU finished as a team with 20 INTs.
The Mountaineers were penalized a massive 7.3 times per game at home, while they averaged just five on the road.
Jaquil Capel finished his career by averaging 13.52 yards per punt return.
ASU allowed 125.92 yards rushing per game, which ranked them 20th nationally in run defense.
Best Win: Old Dominion 31-7, Toledo 31-28
The Mountaineers handled Old Dominion in week two by 24 points. The Monarchs went on to win 10 games on the season.
With the Toledo Rockets loaded on offense, it was the Mountaineers who got the better of the offensive end against a leaky Toledo defense in a 31-28 bowl win. With that win, ASU finished the season with three straight wins, and nine of 10.
Worst Loss: Miami 45-10
The Mountaineers got the treat of Miami agreeing to come to Boone to play, and the Hurricanes seemed primed for an upset at the hands of App State. That never cameclose to happening in a 35 point loss. App State did go on to win six straight after this debacle took place.
2017 Non Conference Schedule: 9/2 at Georgia, 9/9 Savannah State, 9/23 Wake Forest, 10/28 at U Mass
App State loses Cox, but Lamb and Moore are back on offense, and they should be primed for a road trip to Georgia. Remember, the Mountaineers had Tennessee on the ropes last fall. There will be wins over Savannah State and U Mass, and Wake Forest could be a nice win against a P5 team, and that is a home game for ASU as well. Worst case here is 2-2, but I see more in the range of 3-1 against this lineup.
