REVIEW
The Bears were one of my more frustrating and disappointing teams in America in 2010. UCA had two seperate 3 game winnning streaks surrounded by streaks of madness where they became some other team at times. What they showed was the lack of consistency necessary of a winner.
Nathan Dick was an enigma at QB. Dick passed for 2589 yards on the season, second only to Jeremy Moses, but his totals of 12 TDs and 7 picks are boggling. How do you pass that much and only toss 12 TDs on the season? It does not make sense. The 7 picks were a decent number, but only 12 scores?
Maybe the strategy was to get the ball close, and then give it to Terrence Bobo to punch it in? Bobo scored 9 times, but again, the numbers a wierd, because Bobo only rushed for 416 yards, and Jackie Hinton scored 4 while only rushing for 322 yards. Hmmm.
Kenneth Robey was a star at receiver, as he caught 71 passes for 809 yards and 6 TDs on the season. Isaiah Jackson also worked out nicely with 50 yards receiving per game on the season. Dominique Croom was second on the team with 42 receptions.
LB Frank Newsome was a busy guy with 100 tackles on the season for the Bears, good enough for the 5th best number in the Southland. Fellow LB Tok Opeleye joined Newsome in the conference top 10 with 81 tackles on the season, good for 7th.
Markell Carter was very adept at forcing the issue behind enemy lines, as he led the Southland with 21 TFLs on the season. Carter was a force on every play, and often required double teams, which were often enough ineffective. Newsome found a happy place behind the line as well, as he forced 12 plays behind the line, good for 6th in the conference. Carter led the team with 6 sacks as well, a number that the staff would like to see increased by whomever the sack leader will be in 2011, as Carter is a departing senior.
Desmond Wilcox broke up 7 passes in 2010, but he did not get a little help from his freinds, as no other DB registered in this stat in the top 10. Wilcox was basically a man on an island as the BEars allowed just over 200 yards passing per game. Justin Love did pick off 6 passes to lead the team, and tie for the conference lead, but other than that, he was largely vacant on routine plays.
Eddie Carmona was largely below average at the PK spot. He only hit on 9 of his 15 FGs on the season, but then again, most of the league was basically about the same there. Carmona was also below solid with only a 39 yard average as a punter. Maybe this is an indicator that the Bears need to have him choose only one spot and splkit the responsibilities.
FINAL NOTES
This could have been a very nice season for UCA, but they never found the groove in crunch time, and left everyone lacking for anything to genuinely get excited about. Even with 7 wins, one of those came against Elizabeth City State, and UCA has certainly been an FCS member for long enough to forget about scheduling games like that. You want to expect more, but you can't force yourself to do more until someone hee proves that this team can win regularly. UNtil then, just an average, at best, football team.
