OFFENSE
217.3 yards per game
Offense. I took offense to how bad this team was in 2010. This was one of the most putrid teams in the nation overall, and especially on the offensive side of the ball. MVSU passed for an awful 124.5 yards per game, while rushing for a miserable 92.8 yards per game. There was nothing to like about what the Delta Devils did on offense. The Devils were held to single digits 6 times in 10 games, and never scored more than 20, which they managed twice.
Oliver Hughes started 9 games at QB, and could not hit the Mississippi River if he tried. He managed to complete a putrid 40.9% of his passes, something that drunken barge operator could pull off on his worst day. His output of 132 yards per game was actually ahead of the team average, but God only knows how. He also managed to toss just 8 TD passes in 10 games against 8 picks.
Neither of the top two RBs managed to even average 3 yards per carry on the season, and Chris Watkins barely squeaked out 330 yards rushing. There is definately no skill at this skill position.
Paul Cox managed 522 yards and 5 TDs off of just 21 receptions. When your QB only manages to hit on 40% of his passes, it makes making a living as a receiver pretty much impossible, but Cox did his best, and deserves some credit for at least showing up.Chris Williams hauled in 32 receptions, but never saw the endzone, and managed an average of under 10 yards per catch.
DEFENSE
468.1 yards allowed per game
While the offense only scored 13 TDs in 2010, the defense was busy giving up 46. They gave up 269 yards through the air, but also gave up just under 200 on the ground. If they were the Matador, then the opposition was one damn angry bull, and the Matador was going to get gored...repeatedly.
Markkus Davis was a busy guy in the secondary, as he led the team and was 4th in the SWAC in tackles with with 76 on the season, which is bad news when a member of your secondary is leading your team in tackles.
Marcus Thompson and Leployer Franklin were the only players up front showing any kind of aggressive streak, as Thompson finished 14th in the SWAC with 14 total TFLs, and Franklin finished 24th with 10. My question? Where was everyone else??? Even then, Franklin led the team with only 4 sacks on the year.
Marquis McFadden had 5 passes defended on the season, hardly excitement worthy, meaning that the members of the secondary were busy playing catch up rather than making plays on the ball. They were hung out to dry from QBs having all day to make plays from the pocket, and then hung themselves out by doing nothing to stem the bleeding in coverage.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Carlos Sanchez only attempted 4 FGs all seaosn long, and he hit 3 of them. I guess that's something. He was purely bad as a punter, only averaging 37 yards per ount on the season. Hardly shocking, as bad as the rest of the team was.
FINAL NOTES
What happened to the amazing days of Totten and Rice at MVSU, when the Devils were hanging 80 points on people while displaying a pure arsenal of talent? These are not your father's Delta Devils, and that's a damned shame. This team is one of the worst on any level of college ball in the country, and there is no light at the end of the tunnel. This train has hit the wall, has gone over the cliff, has torn through an orphanage and a puppy mill, and then crashed head on into a church. Yes, it's that heinous.
