OFFENSE
324.2 yards per game
When a team finishes 3-8, I hardly expect that team to have passed as well as the Bucs did, but they managed to pass for 220.3 yards per game, and even rushed for 103.9. Let's not get too excited, as two of the non-conference opponents were D2 teams in North Greenville and Mars Hill.
Injuries were a major issue at QB, as AJ Toscano was limited to 5 games, while Andrew Trudnowski was limited to 7. They were the two best QBs that CSU had available at any point, and they combined for 2109 yards and 15 TDs against 10 picks. The issue is this...both have now moved on, leaving sophomore-to-be Malcolm Dixon as the most experienced QB left with appearances in only 3 games under his belt.
The news was no better at RB, with Demarcus Moon having only rushed for 438 yards. He too was a senior, and the experience behind him was non-existant.
Gerald Stevenson was the best receiver on the team, and his official position was QB. He caught 54 passes for 777 yards on the year, but he too is now gone, and the next best receiver caught 22 fewer balls than the backup QB turned WR. Not good news here either.
DEFENSE
443.7 yards allowed per game
Where to start with the ugliness of this unit. The Buccaneers were an open door to just getting assaulted from all angles. They were beaten up for 238 yards per game by air, and another 205.7 yards per game on the ground. It was a buffet, and the Bucs were on the menu.
Chris Patrick was one busy LB, collecting 92 tackles and averaging 8.36 per game, good for 3rd in the Big South. The bad news was that DB Chris Kuzdale was next with just 58, a huge void from 1 to 2.
Chris Patrick and Fred Godfrey may not have been active on the routine tackle, but they did stay busy in the backfield, having combined for 27 TFLs on the season. They were the only Bucs who finished in double digits on the year, meaning that there were other holes that teams could exploit to avoid these two players. Joel Walton did collect 9 TFLs, but nobody else registered. Not one player registered in the top 20 in sacks, and the league was not known for them.
Charles James led the conference with 11 passes defended, but he was thrown at often. Nobody else in the secondary did half of what James did on the season. James also tied for the league lead with 6 picks, again, with nobody else contributing even half of that number. James returns as a junior in 2011.
SPECIAL TEAMS
John Paglia was as bad as it gets at PK, having only hit 3 of 8 on the season. Andy Brown should replace him in 2011, but he only attempted 1 FG in 2010, and amazingly enough, he actually nailed it.
Here's the bad news. Brown is also the punter, and he was awful having only averaged 34 yards per punt.
FINAL NOTES
CSU needs to knock off the overzealous scheduling, again having served as cannon fodder for Hawaii and Kentucky. CSU should never, ever schedulegames against FBS teams of any kind, as it's never worth the money to get wrecked like they do. CSU is barely functional against mid-level FCS opposition, much less to go higher up the chain, and it doesn't attract better kids to do so either. Work first on just finding ways to improve in conference play. The Bucs are just horrible, and I find them to barely be passable as a football member of the FCS. Facilites are bad, and the program is stuck spinning the wheels on the road to nowhere.
