There is a ton going on, so I will post for yesterday and today in this epsisode, and then I will merge Sunday and Monday on Monday. Here is the latest news from the Carousel...
Maryland HC RandyEdsell has his man to run his offense, and that man is LSU OC Gary Crowten. Crowten has been a renowned OC for years, but his last couple of efforts at LSU have not gone amazingly well by any stretch. Even though the Tigers won 11 games in 2010, Crowten's offense was a lag on the rest of the team at times. John Dunn has also left LSU and will join the Maryland staff as the TE Coach. Tom Bratton has been retained to coach the O Line.
LSU has begun the process of replacing Crowten by interviewing Southern Mississippi OC/QB Coach Blake Anderson. Anderson is known for running wide open offenses that spread the field, but does not necessarily run the spread.
Tulsa has replaced Todd Graham with RB Coach Bill Blankenship, and Blankenship will make $500,000 per season. Garrick McGee was an early favorite, but off-field issues scared Tulsa away from hiring him, and Tim Deruyter turned down the job when he became insulted by the offer that Blankenship accepted. Blankenship is an unknown quantity at this point, and it could very well backfire on them as they hired on the cheap. Blankenship immediately announced that he would retain DB Coach Van Malone, CB Coach Jess Loepp, and H-Back/TE Coach Archie McDaniel.
Former South Florida Co-DC David Blackwell and DB Coach Jeff Popovich are the top targets to take over the vacant DC job at Florida International. Popovich would be my favorite to take the job, and would likely be able to retain the DBs as well. Blackwell is also a candidate for the DC job at Texas Tech.
Bruce Kittle has been promoted from campus recruiting coordinator to TE and OT Coach at Oklahoma.
Will Muschamp has hired is final assistant for his staff at Florida. Four time Pro Bowler and likely NFL Hall of Famer Bryant Young has been hired away from San Jose State to become the new DL Coach for the Gators. Young will add an aggressive and disciplined factor to the Gator defensive front.
Bill Cubit made a very nice, but very subtle hire to his staff at Western Michigan. Cubit has hired North Carolina Grad Assistant Josh Gattis to coach the WRs for the Broncos. Gattis had a solid college career as a player and is a young assistant with promise.
UConn tossed a monkey wrench into everyone's coverage of their coach hunt by hiring Paul Pasqualoni. Pasqualoni came in at the 11th hour and put on an amazing presentation in a late effort to obtain the job. He is a Connecticut native, and knows the area. One does have to wonder, at age 62, how much of a long term factor that he will be. Mark Whipple was believed to be on the cusp of being announced for the job.
Jafar Williams has left Northwestern to take on the RB job for new HC Darrell Hazell at Kent State. Williams was a QC assistant for Pat Fitzgerald and the Wildcats. Former Youngstown HC Joe Heacock will join the staff as DC.
Michigan HC Brady Hoke has continued to bring staff members to Ann Arbor from San Diego State. RB Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Jeff Hecklinski and OL Coach Darrell Funk have made the trip. Hecklinski was a candidate at Ball State, and was considered a favorite for a period of time. Fred Jackson has been retained from the former staff as RB Coach.
BYU has named their new RB coach, as Navy RB Coach Joe DuPaix has agreed to join the Cougars. DuPaix will work under new OC and former BYU QB Brandon Doman.
Rice DL Coach Craig Naivar will be the new DC at Texas State for new HC Dennis Franchione. The DC job had been rumored to be in the hands of Franchione's sone Brad.
Norm Chow has not been named to any position at Utah as of yet, but the other assistant rumored to join the staff has done so, as former Minnesota assistant Tim Davis has been hired to coach the O Line.
Houston has a new DL Coach, as Harvard DL Coach Carlton Hall has been hired by the Cougars.
Former Miami (Ohio) interim HC Lance Guidry will be interviewed to become the new DC at Western Kentucky.
David Beatty has returned to Kansas to join the staff of Turner Gill. Beatty was the former WR Coach for the Jayhawks, so it has to be assumed that he will take that role again.
Tyler Cotton will leave Tulsa to join Chad Morris at Clemson. Cotton served Tulsa as Offensive QC Coach.
Todd Graham has made an interesting choice as his new QB Coach at Pittsburgh. Graham has named former North Texas HC Todd Dodge to the job.
North Dakota O Line Coach Rod Carey will be moving on to join the new staff at Northern Illinois and will coach the O Line for the Huskies under new HC Dave Doeren.
New Colorado HC Jon Embree will interview former Carolina Panthers QB Coach Rip Scherer for the same position with the Buffaloes. Schere is the former Memphis Tigers HC.
New Prairie View HC Heishma Northern has named Alabama State RB Coach Vyron Brown. The position has not been named, however one has to assume that Brown will coach the RBs for the Panthers.
Southern Utah has rewarded HC Ed Lamb with a new 5 year contract extension. The Thunderbirds only went 6-5 in 2010, but won the Great West Conference title with a 4-0 record. SUU will be joining the Big Sky Conference in 2012.
North Dakota State DB Coach Brian Ward has left the Bison staff. He is moving on to join the staff at Drake for the 2011 season. NDSU is coming off their first FCS playoff appearance this season. Drake finished 3rd in the Pioneer Football Conference.
Four former Alcorn State assistants are joining the staff at Northern Colorado. OC Michael Armour, DC Zach Shay, RB Coach Terrence Robinson, and LB Coach Derrick Davison are coming over to coach for the Bears.
