How I Would Restructure Power 5, Group of 5, Into Separate Divisions

There has been an uptick in talk about how the best thing for college football moving forward would be for the Power Five Schools to go their own ways and form up new divisions and playoff structures. The conversation was prominent at the Mountain West Football Media Summit here in Las Vegas, and the feelings were largely split, with Craig Thompson, the Mountain West commissioner taking a fence riding stance on it. Most coaches were against it and stated that they would rather keep poking the tiger in the cage to allow for an expanded playoff, something that the current power brokers are loathe to do. If they don't want it, you can be sure that it will not happen.

It is time for the Group of Five presidents, ADs, and coaches to stop living the lie. The media knows it, the fans know it, and anyone with a brain can clearly see that life in FBS football for those not in the current Power Five structure sucks. Group of 5 schools are playing in useless lower tier bowl games, mostly at a cash loss in front of at least half empty stadiums, and have no hope at ever breaking the current playoff barrier. That will not change in the next eight years, when a new TV deal is getting done, and it won't likely change then either. Nothing has changed in the last 30 years. The power conferences and ESPN dangle the carrot, and the G5 conferences keep on acting as the whore to the pimp, doing what they are told, or getting left out in the cold. It's time to end that dance, and put the lie to bed. It's time for a restructure of the Power 5 and Group of 5, and it's time for separate divisions, and I am just the person to line it up.

In this article, I will line up two separate divisions, and will go back in time to refer to them as division 1-A, and division 1-AA. We leave the current Division 1 structure alone for the purpose of other sports. In so doing, I would abolish the ridiculous legislation that insists that a university play all sports in D1 if they play even one sport in D1. That has been more damaging to college athletics than just about any other legislation in the last 30 years in college athletics. In so doing, we would allow the bottom tier current FCS schools to play a more comfortable level of D2 football without breaking their budgets, or forcing them into big contract road games that crush their programs on a yearly basis with injuries for the sake of making some money. For those who don't agree, and who need that cash to survive, my answer is simple. You need to drop football, or athletics in general if that is what it takes for you to have athletics.

Here is my lineup of what a new 1-A, and a new 1-AA would look like:
