Coaches on the Hot Seat: 2013 Edition 2

With week one almost completed, it's time to take a look at our updated "Hot Seat" list for the 2013 season. This series differentiates itself from "Coaches Swimming in the Dead Pool" by way of what the meaning. The Hot Seat includes coaches who are feeling the heat, but have a more than reasonable ability to remove themselves from danger. However, they can also worsen their position and fall into the "Dead Pool" at any time. Let's see who is feeling the heat after one week of College Football play...

Coaches on the Hot Seat: 2013 Edition 2

Tony Levine, Houston: The Cougars crushed Southern in week one, but I am not ready to release Levine from the grips of the seat until he can prove that he can beat someone of a higher caliber than that of a mid-tier SWAC team.

Jim Grobe, Wake Forest: The Deacons struggled early against lower level FCS foe Presbyterian, but eventually pulled away for a 31-7 win. Again, until Wake Forest plays someone of quality, Grobe stays on the seat.

Randy Edsell, Maryland: This is a recurring theme, as Florida International is about as bad as there is for an FBS program right now. Maryland's schedule will toughen up, and with a Big 10 move coming next fall, it's hard for me to see Edsell righting this ship enough to be particularly comfortable having him running a Big 10 program.

Mack Brown, Texas: The Horns struggled in the first half before blasting New Mexico State in the second half to win 56-7. It was 14-7 at the half. Brown seems the most likely candidate to pull himself off of the seat, but it only happens with more quality wins against better quality opponents.

Charlie Weis, Kansas: The Jayhawks open this week, so until I can see some on-field results. Weis stays right where he is. I have a bad feeling about this.

Dave Christensen, Wyoming: The Cowboys came close to upsetting Nebraska in Lincoln. That may be good news moving forward, but it could also lead to a letdown coming up. I am waiting to see how the Cowboys respond to a near major upset.

Troy Calhoun, Air Force: The Falcons beat Colgate by 25. That's not a major accomplishment. Calhoun stays for another week.

Gary Pinkel, Missouri: Mizzou picked up an easy win against an FCS opponent. Not a big deal by any standards. Let's wait to see what the tigers do against SEC competition. Pinkel could be swimming in the Dead Pool before too long.

Rick Stockstill, Middle Tennessee: Stockstill also pounded on an outclassed FCS opponent in Western Carolina. Again, I wait to see how the Raiders stack up against better teams before giving him a pass.

Fell Into the Dead Pool: Paul Pasqualoni, Syracuse; Kirk Ferentz, Iowa; Norm Chow, Hawaii; Lane Kiffin, USC; Dan Enos, Central Michigan; Ron English, Eastern Michigan; Bobby Hauck, UNLV.
