Kliff
Kingsbury, Texas Tech
Beat Eastern Washington this week 56-10, but still has to beat someone
that is big enough to earn him a solid high quality win or two in FBS. People
are losing faith in his ability to get it done.
Brian
Kelly, Notre Dame
A huge sigh of relief came out of South Bend this week after Notre Dame
crushed Temple 49-16/ Kelly needs to keep this up, and a win over Georgia this
week would seriously help.
Rod Carey,
Northern Illinois
He’s been getting some heat despite early success, but the home loss to
Boston College has only intensified the flames this week. He has to get some
wins, and make a move in the MAC.
Matt Wells,
Utah State
That dimming star just lost more luster this week. After leading
Wisconsin early 10-0, the Badgers went on a 59-0 run to end the game, and the
Aggies never scored again. That’s not a good way to turn down the heat.
Jim Mora,
UCLA
Sure, the Bruins completed the second largest comeback in history in
beating Texas A&M 45-44, but why were they down by 34 points in the first
place? It’s highly unlikely that they will be able to survive this way
throughout the season, and there were several viable deficiencies in coaching
and execution for most of that game.
Mark
Stoops, Kentucky
The Wildcats avoided a back to back yearly loss to Southern Miss this
week, and are 1-0 this season. The main issue is that the win was fairly
unimpressive, and Stoops knows he has to keep up some kind of momentum now.
They have to get some credible wins to keep him employed.
Butch
Jones, Tennessee
The Vols were lucky to escape Atlanta with a 42-41 2OT win over Georgia
Tech, and trailed for a chunk of the football game. A win is a win, but the
rush defense was abysmal. That won’t fly in SEC play.
Derek
Mason, Vanderbilt
Mason and his Commodores took out Middle Tennessee 28-6 in the opener,
and it appears that QB Kyle Shurmur may provide an answer on offense. If Vandy
keeps up the early momentum, Mason may end up completely safe in no time.
Bret
Bielema, Arkansas
Bielema gets a huge shot to get off of the seat for a bit with a win this
week against TCU. Arkansas won that game a year ago, so there is always a shot.
Both teams hammered FCS opponents in week one.
Kevin
Sumlin, Texas A&M
Blowing a 34 point lead and losing late to UCLA has done nothing to fix
his issues. One regent has already called for his firing, and I am shocked that
there have not been more calls. He has an easy week this week, but things get
tougher shortly.
Dave
Doeren, NC State
Doeren can never seem to win close games, and this week was another loss
of seven points or less when the Pack was favored over South Carolina. Is he
ever going to turn the corner?
Paul
Johnson, Georgia Tech
Tech had several chances to put Tennessee away on Monday night, and yet
lost by one in double OT. He cannot afford to let the team slide backwards
again, but he seems to do that every other year.
David
Beaty, Kansas
Kansas finally beat an FCS patsy, something they have been unable to do
at least half of the time lately. Everything gets back to being real now, and
if the Jayhawks go on a losing streak against FBS opponents, kick him back into
the Dead Pool.
Lance
Leipold, Buffalo
Leipold was an experiment of sorts for the Bulls program, and that has
not worked out very well to this point. Leipold’s defense was stellar against
Minnesota last week, but he has to get some of those wins to stay safe.
Tony
Sanchez, UNLV
Lose to Howard as a 45 point favorite, and your spot becomes
indefensible. Another loss to Idaho this week would really get the fire
churning.
Gary
Anderson, Oregon State
The Beavers were completely outclassed by Colorado State, a mid level
Mountain West program. This last weekend, they needed a missed FG by Portland
State to stay out of OT. It’s not going well in Corvallis.
Todd
Graham, Arizona State
The Sun Devils gave up 400 yards passing to New Mexico State in a narrow
six point win over the Aggies. Things may only get worse from there.
Rich
Rodriguez, Arizona
The Wildcats cruised in a win over Northern Arizona, but now it’s time
for big boy football against Houston. I am not sure how this will go, but if
there is no major improvement, we could see Rich Rod back in the Dead Pool
before too long.
Jim
McElwain, Florida
He still has not found a QB, and his players are running amuck, as he had
to suspend 10 of them for the Michigan game. With no controls, no discipline in
the program, and few major wins to show for it, McElwain is starting to look to
be in over his head.
Mark
Hudspeth, Louisiana-Lafayette
The Ragin’ Cajuns needed some late game heroics to stave off FCS member
SE Louisiana this week, and the Lions are not even favored to win the Southland
Conference. Hudspeth is getting exposed more and more.
Doug
Martin, New Mexico State
It was a great effort against Arizona State in the 37-31 loss, but when
are the wins going to start coming? It’s going to get harder next season as an
Independent, so something has got to give.
Tyson
Summers, Georgia Southern
Georgia Southern was playing so well under Willie Fritz, but Summers
looks in way over his head after a 41-7 loss to Auburn. If he cannot start
getting some wins, and soon, he may be pushed out very early in his tenure, as
the grumbling is already going on in Statesboro.
Now Safe
Chad
Morris, SMU
Steve
Addazio, Boston College
Dave
Clawson, Wake Forest
