NBA Free Agency Report: Pelicans Make a Move, But Not One Anyone Was Waiting For

The Pelicans took an insurance bid on signing Elfrid Payton, a PG, who spent most of his career with Orlando before being dealt to Phoenix at the trading deadline. Payton has never fully deveopled as a starting PG in the NBA, as his 3 point percentage is well under 30% for his career, and has a career average of just 6.4 assists per game.

Payton became a priority signing, as the Pelicans are still trying to come to terms with Rajon Rondo, who is currently a free agent. New Orleans is also trying to resign DeMarcus Cousins, who will be meeting with the team today, as well as meeting with the Lakers afterwards.

There is still a priority on signing both Rondo and Cousins at this time, and the Pelicans are also looking to speak with Tyreke Evans at some point in the next 48 hours. If the Pelicans are to make a play in the Western Conference, and stay on an upward arc, signing Cousins is paramount. Signing Rondo, not so much.

Stay tuned as we move forward in the next week with more NBA news in New Orleans.
