Will Barton, the longest current tenured Nugget, has re-signed with Denver for 4 years total for $54 million. One of the best 6th men in the league, Barton saw career highs statistically for Denver last season, and is a valued member of the foundation of a building project that is starting to pay some dividends.
Barton has 3 years guaranteed on this new deal, with a player option for year 4, and the cap hit is in the range of $12.5 million, which is consistent with the top 6th men in the same stat region as Barton throughout the league. This deal becomes easier to deal with as league cap figures increase throughout the deal.
It would be best to keep Barton coming off the bench, where he scored 15.7 points per game from last season, but there is a shot that he becomes a 5th starter, which would devalue the bench overall. If Denver can go out and grab an affordable 5th starter, and keep Barton as the 6th man, this deal looks better, and the Nuggets have variable lineup options that strengthen the overall product.
Stay tuned...
