Fred VanFleet saw his only real other option sawed off when Phoenix signed Trevor Ariza, but yet the Raptors still payed more cash than was projected to retain VanFleet, even as he held zero leverage, by inking him to a 2 year deal worth $18 million.
One of the best 6th men in the NBA last season, the Raptors values resigning VanFleet to try to find a way to overcome past failures and sail into the NBA finals. VanFleet was a key part of the structure that got the Raptors into the number one seed in the East last season, and now will get a chance at redemption.
Toronto fell well short as a one seed last fall, and are trying to figure out what to do with their under performing roster, and are even thought to be considering trading star Guard Kyle Lowery. The Raptors are still a Guard-centric team, and need to find some help up front, and need to find somebody capable of defending, especially in clutch situations, and dealing Lowery may be the only path to that goal.
More to come...
