Trevor Ariza signed a one year deal in Phoenix worth $15 million, and the Suns wasted all of their internal cap space on a player that simply is a part to be used for one year with a young, developing roster that now includes top draft pick DeAndre Ayton and young players like Josh Jackson and Devin Booker.
Ariza was simply a 3rd option when it came to getting a deal done by Houston, and he fell sharply behind Clint Capela in terms of priority. Capela is a restricted free agent, and the Rockets can match any offer made.
Ariza has never been what one would call a front line star in the league. A nice piece for defensive purposes, maybe, but he is not the kind of veteran player that can change the fortunes of any franchise, especially one engulfed in losing and young player development as the Suns. He wanted to be payed like a front line star, and he simply is not worth that, and the Suns made, in my opinion, a foolish move by spending as much as they did on a single part that really does not elevate the overall franchise at this phase.
At the same time, they are, smartly, trying to work out a long term deal with Booker, which is a much smarter use of their overall time. Who could argue that bringing in a veteran to work with the young players is a bad idea, but spending $15 million on one such player was a fools errand.
