PASS: Virginia Tech, Louisville, North Carolina, Syracuse
The Hokies now find themselves just a half game out in the Coastal after a dominant win over Miami at home. Justin Fuente is bringing some of the swagger back to Tech, and Bud Foster is performing his defensive magic once again as well. Tech is now just a half game back of UNC in the division, and has already registered a win over Carolina this season. Tech is right in line to win the division in Fuente's first season.
Speaking of the up and down North Carolina squad, they lead VT by a half game, and absolutely had to win to stay just slightly ahead of the Hokies in the Coastal. UNC got the big win over Virginia, but they need the Hokies to lose at some point, because even if they win out right now, and so does Virginia Tech, they would lose out. This is shaping up to be one of the better races in college football.
Louisville can ill afford another loss in ACC play, but they blasted NC State out of the building yesterday, and they are still in the chase in the Atlantic, albeit barely. Lamar Jackson accounted for three more scores yesterday as well, keeping his Heisman lead more than alive.
Syracuse is really making some noise in the first season for Dino Babers, and the Orange are alive for a bowl birth in year one, ahead of schedule in the rebuild process. Eric Dungy is also one of the best QBs in the nation, and is getting little attention for it.
FAIL: Miami, NC State, Virginia, Boston College
Miami us falling apart at the wrong time, and are now losers of two in a row after their collapse against Florida State. This week, the Canes were not even in the game at Virginia Tech, and that is troubling for some folks who, just two short weeks ago, were claiming that the Canes swag was back. It's not.
NC State is also unraveling at a terrible time, and also has two straight losses after being blown out by Louisville. Like Miami, who is now completely out of the ACC race at 4-3 overall, NC State is now next to last in the Atlantic, just ahead of Boston College.
Speaking of BC, the Eagles are now 0-12 in their last 12 games against ACC teams. The Eagles were always a poor fit in the ACC expansion process, but this has been a disaster. Steve Addazio may very well be on his way out at this point. This just cannot continue, and the administration needs to demand more.
It's hard to come down hard on Virginia at this point. This is a building job by Bronco Mendenhall, and he has what Addazio does not, an ACC win.
