We are more than halfway through the 2016 season, which brings me to the point of projecting who likely should make it into the FCS playoffs this year. I have broken it down based on conference leaders, removing MEAC, SWAC, and Ivy League members (they don't participate), and by our PRS rankings. Here is my first projection for the FCS playoff schools for this fall:
1. James Madison (Colonial)
2. Sam Houston State (Southland)
3. Richmond (Colonial)
4. Central Arkansas (Southland)
5. Eastern Washington (Big Sky)
6. Citadel (Southern)
7. Montana (Big Sky)
8. Chattanooga (Southern)
9. Youngstown State (Missouri Valley)
10. Western Illinois (Missouri Valley)
11. North Dakota State (Missouri Valley)
12. Villanova (Colonial)
13. North Dakota (Big Sky)
14. Sacred Heart (Northeast)
15. Lehigh (Patriot League)
16. Jacksonville State (Ohio Valley)
17. San Diego (Pioneer)
18. Samford (Southern)
19. Eastern Illinois (Ohio Valley)
20. South Dakota State (Missouri Valley)
21. Cal Poly (Big Sky)
22. Tennessee State (Ohio Valley)
23. Weber State (Big Sky)
24. Charleston Southern (Big South)
That final spot is still fluid, as CSU is not pulling away from the small pack in the Big South. Only the league champ will get in. At this time, I project 3 teams in for the Colonial, 2 from the Southland, a division leading 5 from the Big Sky, 3 from the Southern Conference, 3 from the Ohio Valley conference, 1 from the Northeast, Patriot League, and Pioneer Football League, and the final spot for the Big South champion.
We will update these projections one week from tonight!
