Wisconsin jumped out to a 14-0 1st quarter lead, and then used a staunch defense to carry them the rest of the way, as the Badgers won their 3rd straight bowl appearance, and clinched their first 11 win season since 2011 in the Cotton Bowl. It was the first loss of the season for Western Michigan, the Group of Five rep in the NY6 alignment, as the Broncos finished 13-1. It was the most successful season in WMU history.
LB TJ Edwards led the way on defense for Wisconsin, as he finished with 12 tackles, and picked off a 4th quarter pass that set up the final score for the Badgers, sealing the win. This was the first time all season that WMU did not score at least 20 points.
The loss snapped a 15 game winning streak for the Broncos.
Bart Houston and Alex Hornibrook both played, and completed 13/14 passes on the day combined. Corey Clement led the Badgers with 71 yards rushing and a score.
Wisconsin won the rushing battle with 184 yards on the ground, compared to 123 on 31 carries by the Broncos. Zach Terrell finished with one of his worst games of his career, passing for just 157 yards on 16/26 passing with a TD and one pick.
Corey Davis, the all-american Bronco WR, finished with just 6 catches for 73 yards and a score.
Wisconsin's Troy Fumagalli was the Badger receiving leader with 6 receptions for 83 yards and a score.
The two teams combined for just 7 penalties in the game.
Wisconsin was an solid 7/11 on 3rd down conversions.
