According to a solid source at Sacred Heart, HC Paul Gorham will not be fired as was earlier reported. According to the Athletic Department at SHU, Gorham will definately be in place for the 2011 season.

Miami
The Gruden soap opera continues. I believed his denials tobe empty, and according to CaneSport.com, barring any glitches in negotiations, Gruden will indeed become the next coach of the Hurricanes. They are also reporting that his brother, Jay Gruden (former Orlando Predators HC) would be the OC. Keith Harding reported yesterday that Gruden could hold out of the U job if a scenario presented itself where he would replace Tony Sporano with the Dolphins if the new team president makes a change, according to sportsbybrooks.com.
North Texas
Dan McCarney has wasted no time in assembling a staff. He is bringing back Mike Canales as Asst. HC Offense. He is also bringing in Grad Asst. Justin Frye from Florida to work the OL. According to footballscoop.com, Western Michigan WR coach Mike Grant is also interested in joining the staff, but no deal has been worked out yet.

Newly fired former Vanderbilt HC Robbie Caldwell will interview at Furman.

Brian Cabral has been given an official interview. I give him less than even odds of retaining the job.

We have had a bunch of hits as to the status of Neil Callaway, and it has been reconfirmed that he is being retained and that Eric Schumann, the DC, is being released.

Other than Scott Shafer, another name that is surfacing is Mike Mallory. Mallory spent time at Illinois, Kansas, and Northern Illinois as DC and his father Bill Mallroy is a former IU coach. Mallory was a star at LB at Michigan, so his Big 10 credentials are solid. Both candidates are now getting good reviews from a very reliable source and friend of the Bilo College Football Report.

footballscoop.com is stating that a 3pm meeting is being held between Bob Toledo and AD Rick Dickson to discuss the program. Those meetings usually end with a firing, which is contrary to what was said a week ago. I have had Toledo in my Dead Pool for a while now, so his release would not be a surprise.
UL-Lafayatte
Ricky Bustle is getting $100,000 as his buyout. Mike Canales is the only candidate that has been discussed.
Minnesota

More rumors surfacing today about the fate of both OC Norm Chow and DC Chuck Bullough. Both could be gone as soon as early next week after the USC game. Neuheisel is sounding desperate to save his own skin as well.

As mentioned, Moses was in the national pack with 8 picks on the season. He totaled 112 yards in returns on those picks, and his 14 passes defended was one of the best numbers in the country. Congratulations to Moses and to the Panther staff and team.

Pass/Fail FBS Week 13 (Thursday/Friday Games)
Here is our next to last pass fail report for the FBS 2010 season. Let's take a look at the games played over the weekend.
Miami (Ohio) 23, Temple 3
Pass: The Redhawks have gone from being one of the worst teams in college football to playing in the MAC title game with the win. Thomas Merriweather rushed for 182 yards in the win and backup QB Austin Boucher passed for 2 scores.
Fail: Temple has really punked out the last few weeks. They went from a team that should have dominated this season to a team that will fill some other conference's useless bowl slot.
Texas A&M 24, Texas 17
Pass: Give it up for Mike Sherman. This team was listing badly at mid-season, and he made a QB swap that saved theri season.Cyrus Gray rushed for 223 yards and a pair of scores to lead the way against the hated Horns.
Fail: Texas is under .500 for the first time in over a decade. Mack Brown does not tolerate such failure. Garrett Gilbert had his customary game were his picks outnumbered his scoring strikes.
Kent State 28, Ohio 6
Pass: Doug Martin had already been canned, so it was win one for the Gipper time. Too bad that the Flashes didn't play with that kind of passion all season.
Fail: Talk about punking out. Ohio could have taken the reins in the MAC, but didn't bother to show up. Boo Jackson played like crap.
Louisville 40, Rutgers 13
Pass: The Cardinals are going bowling with this win, which is solid progress in Charlie Strong's first season.
Fail: Rutgers was just garbage all season on offense. It cost them here for certain, but the defense gave up too.
Northern Illinois 71, Eastern Michigan 3
Pass: The Huskies rushed for 8 TDs in this rout. Next up, MAC title tilt.
Fail: Eastern Michigan got off of the bus, didn't they? Like watching Foreman fight a 4 year old girl.
West Virginia 35, Pittsburgh 10
Pass: The Mountaineers owned Pitt all day long, and Geno Smith was firing on all cylinders. He only attempted 12 passes, and 3 of them went for scores.
Fail: This entire season was like watching a train wreck progress in slow motion for the Panthers. This game was no different.
SMU 45, East Carolina 38 (OT)
Pass: Kyle Padron passed for 3 scores and Zack Line rushed for 2 more on the day for the Mustangs. The win sends SMU to the CUSA Title game to face UCF.
Fail: ECU was victimized by their faulty defense once again. What started out as a surprise success ended pretty much like I thought it would.
Western Michigan 41, Bowling Green 7
Pass: Bill Cubit may have saved himself by ending the season on a 3 game winning streak.
Fail: Everything went wrong for the Falcons again, and the season ends with a miserable thud.
Toledo 42, Central Michigan 31
Pass: Toledo was another surprise team out of the MAC, and Tim Beckman has things headed in the right direction.
Fail: Dan Enos has a lot of work to do, but CMU should not be down for long. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year anyway.
Akron 22, Buffalo 14
Pass: Akron's win means that there will be zero winless teams in FBS football.
Fail: This was as bad a loss as you can have for Buffalo. Jeff Quinn is up against the ropes at the end of his first season at the helm.
Auburn 28, Alabama 27
Pass: Auburn's huge second half keeps them in line for a shot at the title going into the SEC Championship Game.
Fail: How did Bama blow that 24-0 lead? A tale of two distinctly different football games all in one day.
Nebraska 45, Colorado 17
Pass: The Huskers earned their way to their second consecutive North title, and will finish their Big 12 membership in the way that it should be...against Oklahoma.
Fail: Colorado ended their Big 12 membership with a resounding thud, and now they go about the business of hiring a coach that likely won't improve much as they won't pay much.
Arizona State 55, UCLA 34
Pass: The Sun Devils finally got great QB play out of Brock Osweiler, who made the Bruins look like tackling dummies that could not figure out how to cover receivers.
Fail: Everything has gone wrong for the Bruins. Complete change is in order, except at QB, where Richard Brehaut looked solid. He never stopped fighting, unlike the rest of his teammates and coaches.
Tulsa 56, Southern Mississippi 50
Pass: GJ Kinne is finally starting to live up to his billing, and Texas is wishing he had never transferred to Tulsa.
Fail: Defense on both sides of the field was non-existent. Arena Football never looked so good. (I happen to like Arena Football)
Oregon 48, Arizona 29
Pass: The Ducks toyed with the Wildcats for about a half, and then they opened up the can of whoop ass. The Ducks can pretty much do whatever they want to do.
Fail: Arizona has come to the final week of the season looking like a pile of slop that the cat dragged in. They had better get it together against their arch rival Sun Devils next weekend.
Nevada 34, Boise State 31
Pass: If you were shocked by this, than you have not watched enough football in 2010. Nevada is awesome in their own right, and they deserved this victory at home on Senior Night.
Fail: Has anyone checked on Kyle Brotzman since Saturday? Is he ok? God, what a choke job. Now Boise is going to play in some dumpy third tier bowl. They deserve better, and they lost to a damn good team.

Good morning from the west coast. Here is them latest on several coaching situations...
Vanderbilt
Ivin Jasper seems to be no longer in the works for Vandy. As of yesterday, he had not been contacted. There is a new report that says that Vandy will be contacting Virginia Tech DC Bud Foster early next week. Al Golden of Temple seems to be in the mix as well.
Minnesota
The Gophers are in trouble. San Diego State HC Brady Hoke, Air Force HC Troy Calhoun, and UConn HC Randy Edsell have all given this job the finger. I suggest that the Gophers speak to Montreal HC Mark Trestman as the Allouettes are coming off of a CFL Grey Cup win.
Mississippi State
Things seemstable there right now, as Dan Mullen said on ESPN Radio that he has not been contacted by any other shool. I can't say that I believe him, but it's possible, as he probably does have an agent that can give him deniability.
North Texas
Dan McCarney will be earning in the area of $500,000 per season.
Texas State

Ivin Jasper seems to be no longer in the works for Vandy. As of yesterday, he had not been contacted. There is a new report that says that Vandy will be contacting Virginia Tech DC Bud Foster early next week. Al Golden of Temple seems to be in the mix as well.
Minnesota
The Gophers are in trouble. San Diego State HC Brady Hoke, Air Force HC Troy Calhoun, and UConn HC Randy Edsell have all given this job the finger. I suggest that the Gophers speak to Montreal HC Mark Trestman as the Allouettes are coming off of a CFL Grey Cup win.
Mississippi State
Things seemstable there right now, as Dan Mullen said on ESPN Radio that he has not been contacted by any other shool. I can't say that I believe him, but it's possible, as he probably does have an agent that can give him deniability.
North Texas
Dan McCarney will be earning in the area of $500,000 per season.

Linebacker of the Year FCS
I am pleased to announce our LB of the Year FCS for the 2010 season. The winner was chosen amongst 15 finalists. The winner of the 2010 Linebacker of the Year FCS Award is....
KYLE GLAZIER, WESTERN ILLINOIS
Kyle had a huge season for the playoff bound Leathernecks, as he racked up 154 total tackles, 14 TFLs, and 4 sacks. WIU is currently 8-4 and headed to the second round of the FCS playoffs to take on Appalachian State.
Congrats to Kyle and to Western Illinois on a terrific season.
Kyle has earned the first entry at LB for our All-Bilo Team, which will be announced tomorrow afternoon.

The program also cannot aford to back track on the progress that Shannon had made on the disciplanary side, as he had started to succesfully change the culture and improve the character of the Miami program.

Win enough to go to a minor bowl, and graduate players. If you perform those two tasks, you could be coach for life at Vandy. Cleanest program in the SEC, and one of the cleanest in America. Consider it to be a real college job, where academics still come first. Refreshing, isn't it?

FCS Playoffs-Round 1
Round one of the FCS playoffs was completed last night, and other than one game, there were no real surprises (and the one surprise was not much of one). Lets break down the action...
Western Illinois 17, Coastal Carolina 10
The Leathernecks bounced out to a 10-0 lead on the road, but needed Matt Barr's second rushing TD of the day with1:50 left to push themselves up over the upstart Chanticleers on the road. WIU now stays on the road next week when they meet Appalachian State.
Matt Barr had hit Bryce Flowers on a 38 yard pass play to set up Barr's 5 yard scoring run. The Chanticleers then drove all the way to the Leatherneck 4 yard line before Zach MacDowell tossed his 4th pick of the game and WIU was finally able to breath. CCU had 5 turnovers total on the day. Their final drive to tie the game was aided by 2 major penalties by WIU.
Barr passed for 233 yards on the day and rushed for 45. He was picked twice.
The game featured 13 total penalties and 7 total turnovers. MacDowell finished with 292 yards for Coastal Carolina, and he rushed for 71 more on the day.
Lehigh 14, Northern Iowa 7
Lehigh provided our second road winner on the day, as the Mountain Hawks scored 14 in the third and shut down the Panthers after a score in the first to get the win.
Chris Lum passed for both TDs amongst his 262 yards passing, and All-Bilo WR Candidate Ryan Spadola caught 9 passes for 127 yards and a score.
This was the 8th straight win for red hot Lehigh.
Lehigh (10-2) now advances to take on Delaware on the road next weekend.
Billy Hallgren missed 3 FGs on the day for UNI in the loss, and the Panthers finish 7-5.
Panther QB Tirrell Rennie tossed 3 picks and completed only 6 of 14 passes in the loss.
Georgia Southern 41, South Carolina State 16
The Eagles scored 16 in the 1st and another 16 in the 4th to sandwich the Bulldogs at home in Statesboro, despite losing QB Jaybo Shaw to an early injury. SC State had only been allowing 77 yards rushing per game, but the Eagles rolled up 323 yards rushing in their triple option offense. The Eagles scored twice on safeties, and also scored on a fumble return against the mistake prone Bulldogs.
Shaw left the game with an apparent concussion and no news is available oon his condition as the Eagles now prep to take on William & Mary next weekend.
Robert Brown rushed for 77 yards for GSU, but was replaced with FB Lee Banks after his 3rd fumble of the game. Banks rushed for 56 yards.
Malcolm Long was held to 166 yards passing and was picked 3 times for SC State, who finishes at 9-3 on the season.
North Dakota State 43, Robert Morris 17
ND State trialed the Colonials 7-6 at the half, but blew the game open in the second half, as Brock Jensen passed for 2 scores and rushed for another to pull out the 1st round win for the Bison at home. DJ McNorton rushed for 110 yards and added another 110 yards receiving, while scoring twice. ND State rolled up 482 yards in total offense, including a Bison post season record 229 yards passing by the redh=shirt freshman QB Jensen.
All-Bilo candidate RB Myles Russ rushed for 117 yards and both Colonial TDs as Robert Morris fell in their first playoff appearance to finish 8-3 on the season.
NDSU now travles to take on Montana State next weekend.

According to footballscoop.com, Miami is willing to pay Jon Gruden $3 Million per season. Mark Richt has stated that he has not been contacted and fully expects to be back at Georgia in 2011 with his staff intact.

Paul Gorham is being fired as HC of the Pioneers. SHU debuted in our PRS top 35 in early September, and the season went south after that. This is not a surprise. No word on replacement candidates as of yet. stay tuned.

Chuck Neinas and his firm have been brought on board to help with the coaching search. Fred Glass has also contacted Tony Dungy and Bill Polian to consult. Bill Lynch was fired today after IU defeated Purdue yesterday.

AD Fred Glass has scheduled a press conference at 5pm EST to discuss the future of the IU football program. Does not sound like good news to me for Bill Lynch. Expect a change to be made. I'll update this when the presser is finished.

The Hurricanes primary focus for the next 48 hours will be Mississippi State HC Dan Mullen. Join the club. Minnesota wants hime too. Remember that Miami is known for not paying well when you grade out the potential candidates. That being said, an early candidate list entails Jon Gruden, Oklahoma OC Brent Venables, Gary Patterson, and Mark Richt. Sounds like one hell of a wish list. I also want $10 Million while we're at it. There's a reason that they ended up with Randy Shannon, and he obviously was not a great choice even then.

Steve Roberts has sent his assistants out on recruiting trips, and has no indication of his future with the school.
West Virginia
Bill stewart is now countering rumors that he is contemplating retirement after the Bowl Game. In coach speak that means "Damn, someone leaked that and now I have to counter the story before everything gets out of whack. Of course, I'll still retire anyway." Remember Saban with the Dolphins and move on accordingly.
Texas State
Still no word on any actual potential candidates as of this afternoon. There is a solid wish list in San Marcos, but some names are not high on the reality scope. One name that has been tossed around that would make sense is Dennis Franchione, who is desperate to get back into the game, and he would be open to the chance. Just don't let him send out any subscription based news letters. Keep all pens and laptops away from him, and you will be fine. Keep him away from the boosters too.

According to multiple sources, Florida assistant and former Iowa State HC Dan McCarney has been offered the HC job at North Texas. Mike Canales had more than earned the opportunity, but the school felt otherwise.

Seems like he put the wagon before the horse, even though the school was struggling through a horrid season. Talk about being myopic. Dolphins QB Coach David Lee and Miami OC Mark Whipple have expressed some interest in the job, and Vandy wants to speak with Gus Malzahn and Tommy Bowden. Houston HC Kevin Sumlin is not a candidate.
Colorado
AD Mike Bohn is setting up interviews with Eric Bienemy and Jon Embree, both current NFL assistants with zero coorindator or HC experience. Sounds like they are swining for the stars...couch, cough.
Eastern Michigan
AD Derrick Gragg has made it perfectly clear that Ron English will be back in the 2011 season. I never thought that he was in any real danger this season.
Minnesota
AD Joel Maturi has been confirmed as having spoken to Air Force HC Troy Calhoun, San Diego State HC Brady Hoke, Navy HC Ken Niumatololo, and former Tennessee HC Phil Fulmer. Fulmer has been in and out of the picture.

It has been reported that Texas State has strong interest in Phil Fulmer, but nothing has been confirmed as far as actual contact. Texas State goes into the WAC and FBS football in 2012, and would like to counter the hiring of Larry Coker at Texas-San Antonio with a big splash. It is unlikely that Fulmer would be interested with better options on the table with current open jobs, and those soon to be available as well. No other names have been mentioned officially in conjunction with this search.

Receiver of the Year FCS
I am pleased to announce our first annual Receiver of the year award. This player was chosen from 15 finalists from across the country, one from each of the FCS conferences. The 2010 award goes to......................
RAYMOND WEBBER, ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF
Congrats to Raymond Webber, who led all voters with 16840 points when my final numbers were crunched. He was clear and away the highest ranking receiver that was computed by a formula and was not voted upon, as none of our polls or awards are given based on votes. Raymond was a force for the Golden Lions this season, as he grabbed 101 catches for 1429 yards and 10 scores on the season. The Lions finished 5-6 on the season, but would have been much worse without the abilities of Webber in the offense.
Congratulations again to Raymond Webber, our first ever recipient of the Recevier of the Year Award for FCS Football (2010).
With this award, Raymond is an automatic entry to our All-Bilo Team First Unit, and the entire team will be released on Monday afternoon.

Thanksgiving Nightcap...FCS RB MVP
I hope that you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving today. Here is a nice nightcap to go along with that late night turkey sandwich or piece of leftover pie...I am pleased to announce our first annual All-Bilo MVP at RB (FCS). And this award goes to................................
NATE EACHUS, COLGATE
Eachus led all finalists from across the country with 4737 points. Eachus rushed for 1871 yards and 21 TDs on the season and Colgate finished just short in the Patriot League at 3rd due to a late season team slump. Eachus averaged just over 170 yards per game during his Junior season for the Red Raiders.
Congratulations to Nate and to all of our finalists. Nate will be our first of two RBs named to our All-Bilo Team, which will be finalized on Monday.

Tom Dienhart of Yahoo Sports is tweeting that the more people that he talks to, the more likely it is that Rich Rodriguez will be fired after this week's game against Ohio State. Am I the only person the thinks that the Michigan faithful had this guy fired before he ever took the job? I know that things have not been all wonderful in Ann Arbor, but it seems to me that Rodriguez is right on track in getting the Wolverines back onto the national radar. Year three, and he has Michigan in a bowl game with an electric, although inconsistent young QB in Denard Robinson. He is remaking the Michigan offensive mindset and culture, and rather be applauded for ditching the stodgy old three yards and a cloud of dust mentality (more boring than watching a senior citizen wheel chair race) and adding a dimension of wide open exciting football that people on the national stage actually enjoy.
The defense has been an absolute cluster. I give you that, and it does look like Greg Robinson will be removed from his DC spot after the season, but that can be fixed. Michigan is still a top job in college football, and it would be very easy to get a hot shot DC to come in and fix what ills the Wolverines D.
Firing Rodriguez at this point would be a huge mistake for Michigan, because it would take three years of progress and flush it down the tubes only to start over from scratch with what would likely be an entire new offense that the personnel would not be suited for...again. I can understand if the Wolverines missed out on a bowl this season, but that's not the case.

Stan Parrish has finally become a victim of the Dead Pool. No serious candidate list has emerged, but OC Eddie Faulkner has been noted to want the job, and AD Tom Collins has strong interest in Oregon OC Mark Helfrich.

AD Joe Maturi was in San Diego yesterday to meet with Brady Hoke. There's a lot of smoke around this connection, so you have to believe that there is some merit to this connection. Phil Fulmer has been in and out of the mix as well, but I find those chances to be very low.

Mike Canales has been solid since taking over as interim HC, and is being given every opportunity to get the job full time. Dan McCarney has been noted as a strong candidate and his only real competition for the job. UNT is slated to name a new coach by next Tuesday.

It has been confirmed that Mark Richt will return in 2011. You also have to believe that the heat is going to be on full blast.
Penn State
Joe Paterno has announced that he plans to return next season. If he stops coaching, he'll actually explode like the bus in Speed. Coach faster Joe!!!

The Paladins plan to meet with Clemson OC Bill Napier later in the week. Dabo Swinney said that he has guarantees that this situation will not drag on.

Brad Wright has been canned. No list of replacement possibilities has been released yet.

A very bad snub, as this school deserved an in. Went 8-0 in the Pioneer Football League.

You knew that the Flames werescrewed when they fell to a streaking Coastal Carolina squad. Completely undone after a strong start to the season that included a win over FBS Akron.

Florida A&M Rattlers (8-3)
There was not a chance that the FCS would take 3 from the MEAC, even though A&M defeated Bethune-Cookman. The Rattlers late run came up short.
Ranked Ahead Of: Georgia Southern, Villanova, New Hampshire, Western Illinois, Northern Iowa, North Dakota StateBased on the final PRS Numbers, North Dakota State, Western Illinois, and NEw Hampshire got in when mayne they should not have. Villanova would never have gotten in without the OT win over Delaware. Western Illinois would have been out with a loss to Northern Iowa.

Snubbed because of the nonscholarship label, and punished for a win over Edward Waters, a game that was scheduled 3 seasons ago according to Joel Lamp, AD-Media Relations. #2 in the PRS, and led the nation in scoring and total offense. A very bad snub, as this school deserved an in. Went 8-0 in the Pioneer Football League.

Dayton Flyers (10-1)
Also from the Pioneer. Snubbed for much the same reason as Jacksonville. JU was thought all along to be the team from the PFL that would have gotten the bid, but how do you snub not one, but two 10 win schools? Also went 8-0 in the PFL, but never had a shot at Jacksonville.

Liberty Flames (8-3)
You knew that the Flames werescrewed when they fell to a streaking Coastal Carolina squad. Completely undone after a strong start to the season that included a win over FBS Akron.
Ranked Ahead Of: Georgia Southern, Villanova, New Hampshire, Western Illinois, Northern Iowa, North Dakota State
Florida A&M Rattlers (8-3)
There was not a chance that the FCS would take 3 from the MEAC, even though A&M defeated Bethune-Cookman. The Rattlers late run came up short.
Ranked Ahead Of: Georgia Southern, Villanova, New Hampshire, Western Illinois, Northern Iowa, North Dakota StateBased on the final PRS Numbers, North Dakota State, Western Illinois, and NEw Hampshire got in when mayne they should not have. Villanova would never have gotten in without the OT win over Delaware. Western Illinois would have been out with a loss to Northern Iowa.

Final FCS Power Ranking System Standings
Wow. I can hardly believe that we are at the end of the regluar season for FCS football and that the playoffs are less than a week away. The playoff brackets wereannounced today for the FCS, and I will be breaking down every single team that got in, and giving some strong opinion on who got left out in the street. I think that most of you will figure out one of the out schools that I found most disturbing relatively early on in the rankings.
Remember when reading these rankings that this was a point based system from day one. The final totals in these rankings are based on points that were accumalated from the very first game. There was never anything to these rankings other than the points that came from a formula that was created 5 years ago and has not been altered since. I had no say in the rankings other than I sat at a table and crunched numbers every single week for every single game. The math did all of the work, and I am happy with the results. Also remember that every single team from every conference all started out on the same playing field, and nobody was ever favored over any other school or conference, as all 124 teams were in the FCS and therefore should have been treated equally, whether they were a scholarship program or not. You want different treatment for different conferences, than create a seperate division for them.
All of this being sais, I present you with my final FCS Power Ranking System standings, aka the "Bilo Football Poll" as you have all named it (it seems to have stuck). Thanks for reading this season, but we are not finished yet. This having been my first season, the ride has just begun...
1. Bethune-Cookman (10-1, 2083)
Final Game: Lost to #20 Florida A&M 38-27
This week's loss really did not matter in the scheme of things. The Wildcats had already locked up the MEAC, and there was nothing that could be done about it. Luckily, the Cats had built up a big enough cushion, and several teams who were close were either idle or lost. This has to be the best season in the history of this program, and a playoff birth has been given as the reward for winning the MEAC. The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats are the first ever official Bilo National Champions of the regular season!!!
2. Jacksonville (10-1, 2052)
Idle this week, as their season was complete
The Dolphins waited on the edge all week to see what would go down when the brackets were announced, but they were screwed out of a spot. There is devastation at JU today, but never fear, as this program is just starting to rise up. All of the key players on offense with the exception of Rudell Small return for 2011, and there is going to be hell to pay.
3. Pennsylvania (9-1, 1985)
Final Game: Defeated Cornell 31-7
The Quakers locked up the Ivy League with style, and it was just the finale of something that I knew weeks ago. I knew that the Quakers would win the Ivy, and I knew that they were one hell of a team. They make me even more angry about the Ivy League's stodgy attitude towards not allowing their membership in the FCS Football Playoffs. I would have loved to see these guys get a shot.
4. Dayton (10-1, 1953)
Idle this week, season ended last week
Dayton, it could be argued, got screwed just as much as Jacksonville. The Flyers, like JU, finished unbeaten in Pioneer play, and finished with the same record. They finished only 99 points back of JU in the final PRS. It just hurts to see teams this good not get a shot at the reward.
5. Appalachian State (9-2, 1933)
Lost to Florida 48-10
I am not really sure as to why the Mountaineers were using the Gators as a playoff tuneup, but it was not a pleasant experience. ASU is going to make a run in these playoffs, as they always do, because they have amazing talent. I would say that it would be a safe bet to predict that the Mountaineers have even odds of making the final and winning the whole enchilada.
6. Stephen F. Austin (9-2, 1919)
Defeated Northwestern State 36-13
The Lumberjacks were on a wild hot streak from week 2 on until they hit a wall just a couple of weeks back with an unexpected loss. They then turned it around to sweat out winning the Southland. They even got a first round home date to start the playoffs.
7. Wofford (9-2, 1834)
Defeated Chattanooga 45-14
The Terriers got seriously blasted by App. State last week, but bounced back nicely to knock a resurgent Chattanooga program out of the playoff conversation. The Terriers have a nice club, but the loss to the Mountaineers (it cost the Terriers the SoCon title) exposed some flaws. Wofford can still make a nice run in the playoffs.
8. Jacksonville State (9-2, 1761)
Lost to Tennessee Tech 35-24
JSU has a win over Ole Miss, and was ranked #1 in this poll most of the season, but then came a seriously odd loss to Eastern Kentucky, and the demented loss to Tech yesterday that has me thinking that the gas tank has run dry. Would have been number one from coast to coast if not for losing 2 of their last 3 games. Could very well have dropped the game to Southeast Missouri too. Did drop the OVC title, which really puts a sour end to what was going to be a really fantastic regular season.
9. South Carolina State (9-2, 1767)
Defeated North Carolina A&T 48-3
The Bulldogs got into the playoffs after finishing second in the MEAC. The final yesterday was rather expected, so they are cruising in. If you turn a blind eye to these guys, they are the kind of team that can and will bite you. Kind of coasted during the regular season at times.
10. Eastern Washington (9-2, 1662)
Defeated Idaho State 34-7
The Eagles lost the Big Sky title due to having fallen to Montana State, but still wound up in a tie for first. Played the season on red turf, which is cool but hurts the eyes. This is a very good program, and they, along with the Bobcats, have finally found a way to push Montana to the side for now.
11. Montana State (9-2, 1660)
Defeated Montana 21-16
Huge win at Montana yesterday. That win gave Montana State the auto bid to the playoffs, but also bounced the hated Grizzlies out of the playoffs. I got off to a rocky start with Bobcat fan this season when I pelted QB Denaris McGhee. McGhee went on to only throw one more pick all season. That effort payed off, and the Bobcats are playoff bound. By the way, Bobcat fan and I are just fine now.
12. Lehigh (9-2, 1639)
Defeated Lafayette 20-13
The Engineers (that's their original name and I am sticking to it) are quiet and scary. They are the kind of team that you had better prepare for, as they will sting you when you don't expect it. Pay no mind to their struggle to beat Lafayette, as it's the oldest rivalry in D1 football. These guys are good.
13. Southeast Missouri State (9-2, 1608)
Idle this weekend
The Redhawks are one of the countries most improved teams this season, and probably have the best RB in the nation in Henry Harris. A season ending loss to Jacksonville State hurt their ranking, but certainly not their OVC title hopes. JSU lost again this week and handed the title right back to Southeast. Better to back in to the title then not win it at all.
14. William & Mary (8-3, 1582)
Defeated Richmond 41-3
The Tribe had another solid year, but really could have kicked it up a notch. Even at 8-3, they won the brutal Colonial by backing into it thanks to a Delaware loss this week. The Tribe could make some noise in the playoffs, but they need more consistency right now. Are they the team that routed Richmond, or the team that lost to bumbling UMass and James Madison and blew a huge upset shot at North Carolina.
15. Delaware (9-2, 1569)
Lost to #23 Villanova 28-21 (OT)
The Hens had a real shot to bounce the Wildcats out of the playoffs, but one may feel like they just sort of laid down yesterday to give the Colonial another bid,costing themselves a Colonial title in the process. Let's face it, they were in whether they won or lost, and Villanova was out if they lost this game. Looked like a late season NFL pre-playoff date when teams lay off the throttle to save energy. Not the only team that looked that way yesterday, but it's fishy.
16. Texas Southern (8-3, 1522)
Defeated UA-Pine Bluff 20-13
The Tigers came out of nowhere to win the SWAC West, which they stole from Grambling in broad daylight. One of the most improved teams in the country, and one that nobody saw coming.
17. Robert Morris (8-2, 1509)
Idle, Season complete
The Colonials had another huge season. The Northeast Conference champs are headed to the playoffs yet again. Still scratching my head as to how they lost to Bryant...
18. Liberty (8-3, 1470)
Defeated Stony Brook 54-28
The Flames loss to Coastal Carolina smothered their hopes of playing in the post season. I still think that Liberty would be a better fit in the playoffs, but the Big South does not warrant a second bid.
19. Grambling (8-2, 1412)
Idle
The Tigers actually do have one more game left against Southern next week, so technically, they could move up a few spots to end their regular season. Would not have been a playoff candidate before a loss to Texas Southern due to their late scheduling. Makes me wonder why the SWAC just doesn't go D2.
20. Florida A&M (8-3, 1375)
Defeated #1 Bethune-Cookman 38-27
The Rattlers got a huge win, but it was not enough to propel them into a playoff sppot. The good news is that they will be available to take on the SWAC champ in the Legacy Bowl.
21. Old Dominion (8-3, 1249)
Defeated North Carolina Central 33-21
The Monarchs had a very solid season in their final warmup before joining the Colonial next season. Look for ODU to be a competitive member of the CAA from day one. This program is building fast, and winning.
22. Georgia Southern (7-4, 1146)
Defeated Furman 32-28
The Eagles snuck into a playoff bid by outscoring the Paladins 15-0 in the 4th. Not a challenger for the title in reality, but they had their moments.
23. Villanova (7-4, 1111)
Defeated Villanova 28-21 (OT)
The Wildcats came very close to not being able to defend their title. Delaware didn't exactly push their weight around in the first half, and the Cats took an early 14-0 lead. Will have to open the playoffs on the road.
24. New Hampshire (7-4, 1076)
Defeated Towson 38-19
The Wildcats started out very rough this season, but they have gotten very hot in the second half. Clawed their way back from oblivion to jump into the playoffs on one of the last bids offered.
25. Western Illinois (7-4, 1070)
Defeated #29 Northern Iowa 30-14
The Leathernecks were solid early on. Western then started to skid and lose some games that they should have won. This is one team in the playoffs that I am having a very difficult time with, and I am not sure that they really deserved this bid.
