Pass/Fail FBS Week 10

Here is our weekly Pass/Fail report for all FBS games last weekend.

ACC

Miami 35, Georgia Tech 10
Pass: Lamar Miller, Damian Berry, Mike James, and Craig Cooper all rushed for TDs and Stephen Morris passed for 280 yards and a score for Miami. Morris is looking to make the QB job permanently his.
Fail: The Jackets rolled up 409 yards of offense and yet only turned it into 10 points. Mistakes kill.

Boston College 21, Duke 16
Pass: Chase Rettig, while not being great, had a good game for a change and made no mistakes, and Montel Harris did his thing in the backfield. The defense held up beautifully.
Fail: Sean Renfree completed 35 of 49 passes, but never found the endzone.

NC State 38, Wake Forest 3
Pass: Russell Wilson passed for 2 TDs and rushed for 2 more, and the Wolfpack is still alive in the ACC race.
Fail: Wake only managed 188 yards of offense. Not going to win that way.

Maryland 42, Virginia 23
Pass: Danny O'Brien and DJ Adams both accounted for 3 scores, and the Terps are rolling into a bowl game.
Fail: Too much pressure was put on Mike Verica, and the Cavs had very little else on offense, and Verica crumbled at times.

Virginia Tech 26, North Carolina 10
Pass: Tech survived a slow first half, and Tyrod Taylor passed for a pair of scores to lead the Hokies to a huge road win.
Fail: TJ Yates was picked 4 times on the day for UNC.

Florida State 16, Clemson 13
Pass: Dustin Hopkins kicked 3 FGs, including the game winner with 0:03 remaining for the Seminoles.
Fail: Kyle Parker failed again at QB, tossing 2 more picks with no scores.

BIG 12

Missouri 38, Kansas State 28
Pass: Blaine Gabbert got back on track after two very bad weeks, as he passed for 2 scores while rushing for another.
Fail: While Colin Klein is obviously the better QB for the Cats, Bill Snyder stuck with Carson Coffman for far too long, and it cost him.

Colorado 34, Iowa State 14
Pass: Congrats to long time assistant Brian Kabral, as he wins his first game as HC at Colorado. He should probably be in the mix to get the job full time, but I'll hold final judgement on that until the season is complete.
Fail: The bipolar Cyclones lose another head scracther. You have to wonder how they were not motivated to win this game.

Oklahoma 45, Texas Tech 7
Pass: Landry Jones passed for 5 scores to lead the Sooners.
Fail: The Red Raiders could not figure out the OU pass defense.

Texas A&M 42, Baylor 30
Pass: Ryan Tannehill still continues to impress, as he passed for 280 yards. Cyrus Gray rushed for 4 scores on the day.
Fail: Jay Finley scored 3 times, but Robert Griffin could not find a score through the air.

Nebraska 20, Kansas 3
Pass: Roy Helu and Rex Burkhead both rushed for scores, and the Huskers won ugly.
Fail: Kansas generated just 87 yards of offense on the day.

Oklahoma State 33, Texas 16
Pass: The trinity of Weeden, Hunter, and Blackmon were highly productive once again, and the Cowboys blew the game open with a 23 point 2nd quarter.
Fail: This season brings flashbacks of Mackovic to Austin. Garrett Gilbert is an interception tossing machine.

BIG EAST

UConn 30, Pittsburgh 28
Pass: Jordan Todman rushed for 222 yards to lead the way for the Huskies.
Fail: Tino Sunseri is probably wishing that he had those 2 picks back.

West Virginia 37, Cincinnati 10
Pass: Geno Smith passed for 4 scores, all in the first half, and the Mountaineers coasted in the second half.
Fail: The Bearcats just could not get anything going right, and Zach Collaros tossed 2 picks but never tossed for a score.

South Florida 24, Louisville 21 (OT)
Pass: USF did very little on offense, but forced enough mistakes to be able to hang around and pull out an OT win.
Fail: Louisville could have become bowl eligible in Charlie Strong's first season, but now it's wait until next week.

Syracuse 13, Rutgers 10
Pass: Ross Krautman converted a chip shot FG with 1:09 to play, and the Orangemen overcame a myriad of errors to grind out the win.
Fail: Rutgers may have several QBs on the roster, but they don't have a QB that can play.

BIG 10

Wisconsin 83, Indiana 20
Pass: This was the best output by a Badger team in 95 years.
Fail: Pick something on Indiana's side. Pick anything.

Michigan 27, Purdue 16
Pass: The Wolverines survived the Boilers on the road for their 7th win on the season, but this was an ugly one.
Fail: Bad enough that Purdue had 5 turnovers, but so did Michigan. 10 turnovers in one game.

Northwestern 21, Iowa 17
Pass: Dan Persa hit Demetrius Fields from 20 yards out with 1:29 left, and the Wildcats owned Iowa again.
Fail: The Hawkeyes can not find out who they are. They fell right out of the Rose Bowl race this season. They also still have not solved the Wildcats.

Minnesota 38, Illinois 34
Pass: DeLeon Eskridge rushed for 3 scores, and Adam Weber passed for 2 more to give Minnesota their first win since Tim Brewster was fired.
Fail: The Illini lost their defense two weeks ago and still have not found it. They have given up 101 points in two games.

Ohio State 38, Penn State 14
Pass: Daniel Herron rushed for 190 yards, and the Buckeyes coasted at home. Terrelle Pryor announced that he is coming back for his senior year. Where was he going? Dude is not an NFL QB.
Fail: Evan Royster should have left last season for the pros. He has been crushed this season.

CONFERENCE USA

East Carolina 54, UAB 42
Pass: The Pirates needed 27 points in the 4th to put this game away. Dominique Davis passed for 5 scores.
Fail: UAB is sinking back to the bottom, and the defense was a disaster.

Southern Miss 31, UCF 21
Pass: Austin Davis passed for 4 scores and the Golden Eagles look to be bowl bound.
Fail: UCF got into the top 20 in the PRS, and was coming off of a major win over East Carolina, but then they hit the wall this week. Not consistent yet.

Marshall 28, Memphis 13
Pass: Brian Anderson passed for 3 scores, and the Herd stayed alive for a bowl. They still have to win their final 2 games.
Fail: The wheels are completely off of the wagon in Memphis. Larry Porter has nothing to work with.

Tulane 54, Rice 49
Pass: Tulane scored 28 points in the first half, and needed all of it to survive a late charge by the Owls.
Fail: The Owls had 4 turnovers on the day, and that was the difference.

Arkansas 58, UTEP 21
Pass: Ryan Mallett passed for 5 TDs and rushed for another, and the Razorbacks rolled.
Fail: UTEP had absolutely no plan to stop Mallett, and the defense gave up 577 yards on the day.

Tulsa 28, Houston 25
Pass: The Hurricane is getting stronger every week, and the win over Houston puts them in good shape. GJ Kinne rushed for 190 yards.
Fail: Dave Piland tossed 5 picks in this game for the Cougars.

INDEPENDENTS

Army 45, Kent State 28
Pass: Trent Stellman and Brian Cobbs both rushed for a pair of scores, and the Cadets raced out to a 28-7 lead. Army is now bowl eligible.
Fail: Kent State had 4 turnovers in the loss.

Navy 38, Central Michigan 37
Pass: Kriss Proctor rushed for 201 yards and the defense stopped a 2 point conversion for the win.
Fail: CMU got into a deep hole late, and the comeback simply failed at the end.

Notre Dame 28, Utah 3
Pass: Tommy Rees passed for 3 scores, and it appears that the Irish have found a QB to run Brian Kelly's offense.
Fail: The Utes have dropped 2 straight and they are now well out of any conversation about high national profile.

MAC

Northern Illinois 65, Toledo 30
Pass: Chad Spann rushed for 3 scores, and Chandler Harnish passed for 162 yards and rushed for another 149 yards. The Huskies led 28-0 at the half.
Fail: The Toledo D was a mess. Give up 584 yards and you lose. Tackling would have been good.

Miami (Ohio) 24, Bowling Green 21
Pass: Trevor Cook nailed a 33 yard FG as time expired and the Red Hawks escaped an upset bid on the road to stay alive in MAC play.
Fail: The Falcons only had 11 first downs and 220 yards of offense, and also turned the ball over 3 times in the loss.

Ball State 20, Buffalo 3
Pass: The Cardinals only scored 2 TDs on the day, but it was enough to hold off the lifeless Bulls.
Fail: No passing game. No offense. Nothing for the Bulls. Awful football team.

Western Michigan 45, Eastern Michigan 30
Pass: Alex Carder passed for 4 scores, and the Broncos finally found someone that they could beat.
Fail: EMU surely had offense, but the defense was just terrible. EMU falls to 1-9.

MOUNTAIN WEST

BYU 49, Colorado State 10
Pass: Hey, don't look now, but the Cougars can still steal a bowl bid. Who would have thought that it would be possible?
Fail: CSU is a sad mess. Fairchild had better fix this and fast. Get that JC phone dialing finger cranking.

TCU 40, San Diego State 35
Pass: The Frogs proved that they could survive a scare against a very good team and survive. That bodes well for how good this team really is.
Fail: That 20 point deficit at the half was too much to come back from for SDSU. Good team is getting better, but this could have been a program defining victory.

Air Force 48, New Mexico 23
Pass: 5 different Falcons rushed for scores in the win.
Fail: The Lobos just have nothing in the tank. We are probably witnessing the final days of Mike Locksley.

UNLV 42, Wyoming 16
Pass: Omar Clayton passed for 3 scores, and Tim Cornett rushed for 3 more as the Rebels won for just the second time this season.
Fail: Still trying to figure out where it all went wrong for the Cowboys after they looked like an emerging program after last season. What a mess this was.

PAC-10

Washington State 31, Oregon State 14
Pass: James Montgomery, Logwone Mitz, and Chantz Staden all rushed for scores and WSU wins for just the 4th time during Paul Wulff's tenure.
Fail: Stick a fork in those Beavers.

Oregon 15, California 13
Pass: Oregon wins ugly just as well as they win pretty. This team is incredible.
Fail: Again, why is Jeff Tedford so highly respected?

Stanford 17, Arizona State 13
Pass: 2-way star Owen Merecic rushed for a pair of scores and the Cardinal held off ASU to stay in the Rose Bowl race.
Fail: The Sun Devils were held to 12 first downs on the day.

USC 24, Arizona 21
Pass: mark Taylor rushed for 160 yards and a score as the Trojans held off a late Wildcat rally.
Fail: Did anyone other than Nick Foles have any desire to get into the endzone? A rushing game would have been nice too.

SEC

Tennessee 52, Ole Miss 14
Pass: Tyler Bray passed for 323 yards and 3 scores, as the Vols won their first SEC game this season.
Fail: Jeremiah Masoli tossed 3 picks. This guy was supposed to help how exactly?

Kentucky 38, Vanderbilt 20
Pass: Randall Cobb rushed for 170 yards and 2 scores, and Derrick Locke added 145 yards and a pair of scores, and Joker Phillips will be taking UK to a bowl in his first season.
Fail: Vandy is a mess. That is all.

Auburn 49, Georgia 31
Pass: Money Newton picked up 4 total scores on the day, and we witnessed the first game that Auburn will likely have to forfeit when the NCAA wraps up their investigation into wrong doing.
Fail: The Bulldogs were outclassed in this game, and it looks like Mark Richt should listen to those Colorado offers afterall.

LSU 51, UL-Monroe 0
Pass: The offense sucks, but LSU was opportunistic in other ways. How often does a team only pick up 251 yards yet score 51 points.
Fail: ULM had 5 turnovers. That's all you really need to know, except that 2 of those were taken back for scores.

South Carolina 36, Florida 14
Pass: Marcus Lattimore is a beast, and he rushed for 212 yards and 3 scores to lead the Gamecocks to the SEC East title. That is some freshman.
Fail: What has happened to the Gator offense? This is bad. I mean really bad.

Alabama 30, Mississippi State 10
Pass: Look who woke up...Greg McElroy passed for a pair of scores, and it was enough to elevate the Tide to a much needed win.
Fail: Anyone want to throw a football for MSU? Anyone?

SUN BELT
Western Kentucky 36, Arkansas State 35 (OT)
Pass: Willie Taggert got gutsy and went for 2 when he didn't ahve to. He was succesful and earns his 2nd win as WKU HC. Bobby Rainey rushed for 154 yards and 2 scores.
Fail: Steve Roberts may as well start packing. This was a terrible loss, and his Red Wolves underachieved once again.

FIU 52, Troy 35
Pass: FIu rushed for 448 yards and hung a total of 668 yards on the Troy D.
Fail: Seriously? Troy could have locked onto the conference title with a win here. What a freaking mess.

North Texas 23, Middle Tennessee 17
Pass: Mike Canales picks up his second win as interim HC. Lance Dunbar rushed for 226 yards in the win.
Fail: What happened to the Raiders in 2010? This team is a major failure this season.

FAU 24, UL-Lafayette 23
Pass: Jeff Van Kamp passed for 3 scores on the day, and the Owls survived a late rally to win.
Fail: Several assistants have already confirmed that they will be without jobs at ULL after this season. Ricky Bustle should go with them.

WAC

Boise State 52, Idaho 14
Pass: The Broncos are now in good shape to make their final run at a BCS spot. This win was huge with both Nevada and Fresno State still on the plate.
Fail: Isaho was amover last season. Now they can't move out of their own way.

Louisiana Tech 41, New Mexico State 20
Pass: Philip Livas rushed for 2 scores, and the Bulldogs got one of the WAC's complimentary wins.
Fail: I can't beat NMSU up any more than I already have.

Utah State 38, San Jose State 34
Pass: Derrvin Speight rushed for 3 scores, including one from 15 yards out with 1:20 left to give the Aggies the win.
Fail: Why was this game ever this close?

Nevada 35, Fresno State 34
Pass: Vai Taua rushed for 3 scores, including the game winner with 4:56 remaining to keep the Wolfpack in the PRS top 10.
Fail: Robbie Rouse rushed for 217 yards and 2 scores, but the offense flamed out in the 4th quarter.
