Here is our latest look at coaches who have fallen on hard times and had better start winning now. May or may not be fired this season, but are definately feeling pressure.
Randy Shannon, Miami
Ok, injuries have something to do with recent struggles, but sometimes they are just a cheap cop out. Shannon has never gotten the U back to being the U, and the swagger is completely missing. The loss to Virginia last weekend was bad, and they'll probably lose to Maryland this week as well. Time is running short.
Bill Stewart, West Virginia
Shocking losses to Syracuse and UConn are not endearing folks in Morgantown. What's even worse is a current last place standing in the Big East. Stewart had better start looking over his shoulder.
Joe Paterno, Penn State
Paterno is making some comments about seeing the end coming eventually. It really should be this winter. The Lions are ripe for a new direction and new leadership to guide them into the next decade, and it needs to start now.
Rich Rodriguez, Michigan
Year 3 is bringing more of the same, and that does not sell in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines just cannot compete in the Big 10, and if they fall to Illinois this season, Michigan fan will be howling angry.
Bill Lynch, Indiana
People seem to like him, but he needs to win in conference play, and if he can't do it with Ben Chappell at QB, when will he?
Mike Sherman, Texas A&M
Sherman really saved his own ass by beating Texas Tech last weekend. He has to keep winning, but it won't be easy this week with Oklahoma on deck. Aggie fans have high expectations, and they are not being met right now. Add to the fact that Jarrod Johnson lost the QB job, and you have a real issue.
Neil Calloway, UAB
He had been swimming in the dead pool, but has now found a life raft with the win over Southern Miss last weekend. Still not tool late to save himself and crawl out of the hole.
Larry Fedora, Southern Miss
Nothing has gotten any better since he took over for long time coach Jeff Bower. That loss to UAB last weekend was glaring, and his team is not working had for him. He had better light a fire, or he'll be feeling one instead.
Mike Price, UTEP
Explain that loss to Marshall if you can. That was the kind of loss that gets people in El Paso pissed off. There is still time for the wheels to come off of the wagon. They still need two more wins to be bowl eleigible, and they can just as aeasily lose out.
Bill Cubit, Western Michigan
Watched the post game press conference after the los to Northern Illinois. Cubit is sounding like a guy desperate to find positives, but outside of QB Alex Carder, there aren't many. Could have turned it around with an upset, but the Broncos blew it.
Steve Fairchild, Colorado State
There have been some encouraging signs as of late, and the Rams are getting better. They had better get a lot better rather quickly, because he is only going to get one more season.
Dennis Erickson, Arizona State
Got the dreaded public vote of confidence this week from his AD. The end is near.
Jeff Tedford, Cal
What has he really ever done there? I mean, he isn't as dreadful as Tom Holmoe was, but he is average at best, and average isn't going to cut it in this conference after expansion kicks in.
Rick Neuhiesel, UCLA
Slick Rick is still trying to sell that good things are coming for the 8th best team in the PAC-10. Maybe good things will come with his replacement. The bRuins sure do love 8th place, as that's where they sit for the third straight season. Oops, slipped to ninth. See, change is already happening!
Derek Dooley, Tennessee
In case you haven't noticed...UT has failed to win an SEC contest this season. Bobby Bowden visited the other day and called him Darrell. Not what the true Orange fans want to hear.
Houston Nutt, Ole Miss
Jeremiah Masoli was supposed to save the Rebels this season. Nobody has been saved, and the Jacksonville State loss still resonates.
Steve Roberts, Arkansas State
Roberts needs to get the Red Wolves over the hump and win. Has not happened yet, and he has been there long enough to have made the adjustments by now.
Mario Cristobal, FIU
Not what people were expecting, but I never bought into him anyway. I thought that he was a bad hire from day one. Could be gone this winter.
Howard Schnellenberger, FAU
How much is old Howard really able to give this thing? Great coach who needs to step away before it gets ugly.
