Here's all the news that is fit for print in regards to coaching vacancies and rumors around college football on November 15th, 2016:
FBS Jobs
Purdue
The Boilermakers have had their first confirmed interview this week with none other than Greg Olson, who was fired as Jacksonville Jaguars OC last month. Word about 3 weeks ago was that Purdue was taking this search seriously, but that would contradict that statement. Olson is a former Purdue assistant, but Purdue needs to go harder than this. Word on the street, however, is that this job is not getting a lot of buzz or love from potential candidates.
Arizona State
Don't look for any changes in Tempe until 2017, according to several reports. Ray Anderson (AD) has informed reporters that he is not going to make a change after this season no matter how the Sun Devils finish up. He gives no guarantees beyond 2017. Todd Graham will be on a very hot seat to start next season.
LSU
Jimbo Fisher and Ed Orgeron are still the leading candidates for the Tigers job, but Orgeron should have the edge if he wins out and finishes impressively. He has the backing of several important people in the program right now, and it would be a shock if he did not get the job. THat said, Larry Fedora has been vetted as well, and is very interested. Mike Gundy and Tom Herman are both on the list as well...more on that in a few.
FIU
Butch Davis received a 5 year deal that was finalized yesterday to become the new head coach of the Panthers. Davis was long considered the only real candidate for the job, and the final hang ups were overcome yesterday morning.
Oklahoma State
Rumors are increasing that Mike Gindy is looking to get out of Stillwater this off season, and could be a candidate at both LSU and Oregon, if the Ducks do indeed fire Mark Helfrich, which looks more and more realistic. Gundy has fallen out with T. Boone Pickens in what has become a public spectacle of sorts, and that is not a good thing for Gundy. This could be an interesting landing spot for Les Miles, now that some of his other options look to be falling through. Miles, you will remember, was the head coach of the Cowboys before taking over at LSU, and was quite succesful and well liked at OSU during his time there.
Texas
Don't jump on the Charlie Strong being fired train just yet. Reports are starting to circulate out of Austin that the president and AD are not fully on board to make a change, and it is believed that Strong is ready to get the Longhorns to turn the corner in 2017. Recent play would indicate improvements, and patience seems to be the word of the day. Of course if he loses out to TCU and Kansas, that could change things. Stay tuned on this one.
Houston
More word from sources is that outside teams are cooling somewhat on Tom Herman, and it is because of unexpected losses during his tenure rather than big wins, such as losses to both Navy and SMU this season, and the fact that the Cougars will not likely win their division in the AAC this year. Herman was reported by some to have a deal already in place with Texas, but that rumor never came from credible sources, and never gained traction. Stay tuned once again, but it appears there is a solid chance that Herman is back with the Cougars in 2017.
Notre Dame
There is no indication that Brian Kelly will be moved out this off season, and it is highly likely that he returns in 2017. The candidate pool is not considered strong this off season by Irish brass, and this is the first terrible season under Kelly, meaning that the Irish are more prone to stand pat until after 2017. Again, stay tuned.
FCS
Delaware
Coachingsearch.com is reporting that a candidate that could be red hot for the Blue Hens is Edinboro head coach Justin Lustig, who took Edinboro from 0-11 to 9-2 in just one season. More names will surface soon, so stay tuned...
Campbell
No changes are coming with the Fighting Camels, but Campbell will leave the Pioneer Football League to go full scholarship in 2017, and will join the Big South Conference. Expect other programs, like Jacksonville, to follow suit fairly soon.
Abilene Christian
Ken Collums was fired at ACU after going 5-17 over the last two seasons. ACU has been transitioning into FCS football, and it has been a difficult run. They hope to make a hire in early December.
Incarnate Word
With John Williams out as AD, a coaching change could come after the 2017 season. The program has also been having a difficult transition into FCS football from D2.
D2
Brevard
Paul Hamilton is out at Brevard College after 10 seasons. Will update with more info once it is available.
Virginia Union
After a 5-5 season, Mike James will not return in 2017. He took VUU to the playoffs in 2015.
Carson-Newman
Longtime coach Ken Sparks retired, and it will be OC Mike Turner taking his place next season.
Lindenwood
Patrick Ross is out after posting 93 wins to become the winningest coach in school history.
Michigan Tech
Tom Kearly has retired, and will be replaced by DC Steve Olson next season.
Northern Michigan
Chris Ostrowski is out after finishing 3-8 this season. The search for his replacement begins immediately. He was 18-36 at NMU.
