After a finalist list that included Jamie Pollard of Iowa State, Jeff Long of Arkansas, and Rob Mullens of Oregon, and adding Kirby Hocutt of Texas Tech today, Nebraska went completely out of that box, which was largely a smoke screen, and nabbed Bill Moos of Washington State as their new AD. Moos, who formerly had been the AD at Oregon during the rise of the Ducks football program in the mid-90s, gets a five year deal worth $1 million per year for a contract, and now the speculation turns to firing Mike Riley, and hiring his replacement. Moss' current football coach at Washington State is none other than Mike Leach, who has completely renovated the Washington State football program, and, despite a massive loss to California this weekend, has turned the Cougars into somewhat of a national brand.
Speculation now centers on when Mike Riley will be fired, and it will likely come sooner than later, and whether or not Moos can lure Leach to come along with him after getting Leach out of the Florida Keys and what looked like an imposed on retirement.
Other candidates for head coach could include current UCF coach and Nebraska QB Scott Frost, who has that program rocketing in the right direction, Matt Campbell, who is turning the program around at Iowa State, or several other candidates who have not yet been identified.
More on news out of Lincoln as it breaks, and we will be discussing this action on the Power Rated Football Podcast this week, and on my radio appearances on VSiN and ESPN Las Vegas as well.
