Sean Kugler has resigned as head coach of the UTEP Miners today after a loss to Army yesterday dropped the Miners to 0-5 on the season. He finishes with a record of 18-36 overall, and has been to just one bowl game.
Kugler, a former Miner player himself, was a hire that was made to largely to create discipline and a winning tradition at the perennial loser in El Paso. It started to look like the needle was moving up two years ago with Aaron Jones at RB, but the program turned back down starting last season, and has completely bottomed out in 2017.
The Miners are averaging just 14.2 points per game in 2017, while allowing 45.2. The Miners are averaging just 80 yards rushing per game, while allowing 268 yards rushing per game, and are allowing another 233 yards passing per game, while averaging just 140 yards through the air per contest. Three different QBs have attempted as many as 38 passes per game. Not one is averaging 100 yards passing individually per game. The Miners average just 3.05 yards per rush this season.
UTEP is not going to be one of the better coaching jobs available this off-season, but there are a few coaches in the local Southland Conference that may be able to make solid targets for this long suffering program.
More news on this as the season progresses and we learn who the school is targeting as candidates.
