Gary Anderson said back in September that if he could not get the Oregon State football program turned around, he would walk away. Today, he did just that, as Anderson announced a mutual parting of the ways in Corvallis, and he also renounced the rest of his current deal, meaning, he walked away from over $12 million as part of the deal.
AD Scott Barnes has announced that a search would begin immediately, and he would not be "handcuffed by geography, or by coordinators as opposed to current head coaches."
One contributing item that may have led to the departure of Anderson, other than the mounting frustrations of losing, could be an agreed upon deal to upgrade facilities. There was a $1 million earmark to improve locker rooms/facilities. Anderson was told in recent days that those funds had been frozen, and the project suspended. That basically infuriated Anderson, and was noted to be a part of why he left today.
If Oregon State is to make a strong move, they had better stop the brain games that led to this situation, and deliver as promised. This is not a great job. The Beavers are probably the third worst program in the PAC-12, and facilities more than pale to arch-rival Oregon. Whomever the job goes to, it will have to be made clear that the administration is serious about competing in the conference, and with the Ducks.
My candidates for the job would include: Beau Baldwin, Cal OC; Jason Candle, Toledo, and a host of candidates who could be fired. It's not a perfect pool, but there isn't a large pool to begin with.
This situation could not be worse right now for the Beavers, and it could get much worse before it gets better.
