MOUNTAIN WEST
PASS: Boise State,
Hawaii
Boise State pretty
much played everyone eligible on the roster in a 59-0 drubbing of FCS Idaho
State, but may have lost QB Ryan Finley for a while as he injured his ankle.
Who knew that the moribund MWC would be depending on Hawaii to get them a win, but that is
indeed what happened, even if it was by the cupcake route in a 47-27 win over
UC-Davis which brought the Rainbows to 2-1.
FAIL: Air Force,
Nevada, UNLV, Utah State, Colorado State, San Diego State, San Jose State,
Wyoming
Air Force lost
QB Nate Romine last week, and it showed as they were hammered by Michigan
State. They didn’t make it interesting until later in the game when the Falcons
started to make it even remotely interesting.
Nevada never
figured to give Texas A&M much of a challenge, and they didn’t. What’s
worse is that they continued the out of conference futility of the MWC in 2015.
UNLV is now
averaging just 5 points per game over their last two games in losses to UCLA
and now Michigan. They also cannot stop the run to save their own lives.
Michigan pounded the ball, and UNLV had no recourse.
The losses keep on coming in the MWC, and Utah State added another on the road in
a 31-17 loss to Washington. The Aggies have failed to break 20 points in three
tries.
Colorado State has
to figure out how to get close wins, as they have now fallen two straight weeks
in OT after getting beaten by Colorado 27-24 as the Rams had a FG blocked that
would have preserved OT. Close losses are worse than routs, any day.
The Mountain West is the worst conference in the country
for September, and San Diego State did
nothing to help that reputation in a sloppy uninspired loss to one of the worst
teams in the country, South Alabama, at home last night. The Aztecs are now
1-2, and look lost.
The Conference woes continued yesterday with a loss by San Jose State, where the Spartans led
Oregon State at one point 21-14 before never scoring another point in a 35-21
loss. The losses just keep on mounting for this league.
Wyoming may
not win a football game in 2015. That is a sad, sad, true statement. They may
have made their best effort last night, but still fell to Washington State
31-24. Craig Bohl may have to scrap this season and just start all over in 2016
as he tries to build a winner.
