AMERICAN ATHLETIC
CONFERENCE
PASS: Tulsa,
Temple, Memphis, Navy, Tulane
Sure Tulsa got
beaten at Oklahoma, and gave up 52 in the process, but they really played with
the Sooners at times, and looked like a team that would not lie down on the
road. I really like what Phillip Montgomery has done in a short period with the
Golden Hurricane.
Temple almost
faced an upset loss to U Mass, but found a way to hang on and win 25-23. The
old Temple surely would have been beaten, but this team seems special this
season.
Memphis won a huge test game on the road at Bowling
Green, and QB Paxton Lynch went eye to eye with Matt Johnson through the air in
the win.
Navy got the
offense going in a relatively easy win over East Carolina in their first game
as a member of the AAC. Navy could seriously win this conference this season.
When you need a win as badly as Tulane does, by all means go the cupcake route, and beat up on
Maine. Maine is now 0-2 against FBS opponents this season.
FAIL: U Conn, USF,
Cincinnati, East Carolina, UCF
U Conn just
showed complete offensive ineptitude, and the coaching staff didn’t help out much
by calling the late fake FG that ended up being picked. The whole game, other
than the Husky defense, was a mess.
USF made
Florida State sweat on the road last week, and they had a chance to push a
reeling Maryland team, but the Bulls just cannot get any offense going once
again. The Bulls are about a bad a football team that plays FBS football right
now.
Cincinnati was
a favorite in the AAC, but now they look completely overrated after struggling
to get by Miami (Ohio), a team that got blasted at Wisconsin just last week.
The Bearcats are off…way off.
East Carolina was
never really in the game against Navy, and now it looks the ECU rebuilding
project can begin in earnest.
UCF is at an
all-time low right now. After losing to FIU by one in the opener, a late FG by
Furman gave the Knights a loss to an FCS school for the first time since they
went FBS. It’s been forever since UCF started 0-3, and now the QB situation is
in ruins.
