Week 4 PASS/FAIL Report: ACC

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE

 

PASS: Syracuse, Duke, North Carolina, Louisville, NC State

Syracuse gets a PASS this week, even if they did allow 244 yards to Leonard Fournette. In all, the Orangemen didn’t allow LSU to run away with the game in a 34-24 loss, which is saying something. SU is now 3-1 heading into October, and it’s possible, even with all their injuries at QB, that they could squeeze out a bowl bid this season.

Duke is not laying down after their Northwestern loss, and they held the Georgia Tech run game largely in check during a 34-20 win in ACC play. David Cutliffe has us believing that the Devils could be an annual bowl contender, even in what was supposed to be a rebuilding season.

North Carolina rolled up their second cupcake FCS win of the season in a 41-14 rout of Delaware. Now it’s time to actually play someone.

Louisville needed a win any way they could get one, even if it meant rolling a cupcake flate in a 45-3 win over FCS Samford.

NC State has wrapped up their tour of the downtrodden rebuilding football teams of the lower FBS caste in a 63-13 whopper over South Alabama. Much like UNC, it’s time to play someone your own size.

FAIL: Virginia, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Boston College, Virginia Tech

Virginia is absolutely done for 2015, Mike London is going to be fired sooner rather than later, and the entire program has sunk to the bottom of the ocean as far as relevance is concerned. The first play of the game was a pick six by a 300 LBS. Boise State lineman. It just got worse from there.

When you cannot throw the football, you don’t win football games. This means you Georgia Tech! The triple option has looked dated and slow the last two weeks, both losses by the way, and the Jackets are starting to slide hard.

Wake Forest has no offense, and their defense is starting to fall apart at the seams. The Deacons have been in every game, but until their long dormant offense gets going (especially in the run game), there is no way this team can find close wins in ACC play.

Boston College might as well punt every time the offense takes the field and pray their defense can win for them, much like what happened in the 17-14 win over Northern Illinois. Despite being 1-1 in their last two games by giving up only 15.5 points in those two dates, the offense is scoring just 8.5 per game over that same period.

If Virginia Tech never scheduled East Carolina ever again, that would probably be a wise move, as ECU always has the Hokie number dialed up. The Hokies fell yet again to the Pirates 35-24, and now it’s looking more and more as if Beamer should just wrap it up after this season.
