John Elway has hardly been killing the draft the last couple of years. The Broncos had to come in with a plan and hit it hard to succeed this time around. They had needs at CB, LB, OL, TE, and WR. Here's how I graded out their effort:
DE Bradley Chubb, NC State
Chubb was the best player on the board at pick 5, and he pairs brilliantly with Von Miller. DE was not a primary need, but it's hard to argue the pick.
Grade: A
WR Courtland Sutton, SMU
The Broncos had a huge need to give Case Keenum some big time weapons, and Sutton was the best receiver on the board. Great job on this pick.
Grade: A
RB Royce Freeman, Oregon
The Broncos reached a bit on a non-need here. Freeman is a solid player, and could replace CJ Anderson, so I can give back a bit here.
Grade: B
CB Isaac Yiadom, Boston College
Yiadom was a rock solid yet underrated CB in this class, and he fits a need at great value. Expect him to be a surprise impact guy from day one.
Grade: A
LB Josey Jewell, Iowa
Jewell was a solid college backer with limited athleticism. He also had a late 5th round grade, and the Broncos reached in the 4th.
Grade: C
WR Daesean Hamilton, Penn State
Hamilton had a 3rd round grade, and slid to the 4th. He is a solid talent who should give the Broncos immediate impact.
Grade: A
TE Troy Fumagalli, Wisconsin
Underrated talent who could slide into a starting job soon. He was a rock solid pick with great value.
Grade: A
C Sam Jones, Arizona State
Jones had a 7th round grade, while some felt that he was a UDFA. He was taken in the 6th. I hate reach picks.
Grade: C
LB Keishawn Bierria, Washington
Bierria was graded as a UDFA, but the Broncos decided to use a pick on him. They continued to fail on day 3.
Grade: F
RB David Williams, Arkansas
Williams was not even given a draft grade. Another wasted pick.
Grade: F
Priority needs filled in first two days: 2
Total points: 27
Point average per pick: 2.7
Grade: C
