2018 NFL Draft Grades: Washington Redskins

The Redskins are a team without much of an identity right now coming off of a 7-9 season, and they are starting over at QB, after allowing Kirk Cousins to leave via free agency. They did acquire Alex Smith to replace him, so that is where they will store their faith moving forward...for now. With needs at QB, OL, DL, LB, and CB, the Redskins absolutely needed to win this draft. Let's see how they did.

DT Daron Payne, Alabama
He is not spectacular, but he is a master run stuffer, and that is exactly what the Redskins needed for the worst run defense in the league. Payne should help kill the pain in Washington...pun intended.
Grade: A

RB Derrius Guice, LSU
He slid based on threat of embarrassing info coming out about him that never really saw the light of day. He also was accused of not taking his job all that seriously, and his personality and loafer attitude during the process really turned some folks off. He really throttled back in 2017, and that concerns me personally. He had better get his head right. This was also not a need position for the Redskins at this moment.
Grade: C

OT Geron Christian, Louisville
He can play either side of the line, and projects as a future starter at a need position, and the value was rock solid right here. The Redskins got back on track after a momentary lapse with their script.
Grade: A

S Troy Apke, Penn State
The Redskins went off script again with this pick, as he was taken in the 4th round with a 5th or 6th round draft grade, depending on the scout. This was also not a need position, unless he plays corner, which he won't.
Grade: D

DT Tim Settle, Virginia Tech
Settle fell almost three full rounds from where he was graded at, and that worked out for Washington, as they get another run stuffer to help form up a first rate rotation up front now. Back on script again for what was a massively inconsistent draft for the Redskins.
Grade: A

LB Shaun Dion Hamilton, Alabama
Washington reached again, as Hamilton was graded as a 7th rounder, and the Redskins jumped a round earlier to nab him. Again, the planning and process for Washington was borderline laughable at this point.
Grade: C

CB Greg Stroman, Virginia Tech
Corner was a priority need for Washington in this draft, but somehow they decided to wait until the 7th round to address to issue. Stroman will have to make it on special teams, but don't expect any impact from him for now at CB.
Grade: B

WR Trey Quinn, SMU
Only ever had one solid year at SMU, and that was 2017. He may not have the necessary skills to work his way up in the league, and has to find a way to make the roster on special teams. Has some talent, but not enough.
Grade: C

Priority needs filled in first two days: 2
Total Points: 22
Average points per pick: 2.75
Grade: C
