2018 NFL Draft Grades: Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs started out the season in 2017 looking like they would cruise to the Super Bowl, but then started falling apart after a fast start. They still finished 10-6, but will be moving on without Alex Smith, as Patrick Mahomes has been handed the starting job at QB. The Chiefs need to make sure he has some weapons, but somehow listed OL as the only need on offense. They have also listed DL, LB, CB, and S as priority needs. They did not have a 1st round pick. Here are my pick grades for the Chiefs:

DT Breeland Speaks, Ole Miss
If you don't have a 1st round pick, you had better hammer it out of the park in the 2nd, and they did not. This was a major reach pick, as some had Speaks graded as a 4th round pick. It was a need, but there were better players available.
Grade: C

DT Derrick Nnadi, Florida State
The Chiefs did not learn with Speaks, so they reached again in the 3rd by drafting Nnadi, who was graded by some as a 5th round pick.
Grade: D

LB Dorian O'Daniel, Clemson
The Chiefs continued to reach like idiots in the 3rd round, drafting this player, who had a 5th or 6th round grade. Remember, we were still in the 3rd round here.
Grade: D

S Armani Watts, Texas A&M
Finally, the Chiefs drafted someone with decent value in Watts, who was graded in, and selected in, the 4th round, and he also fits a need.
Grade: A

CB Tremon Smith, Central Arkansas
Smith had a 4th round grade, and the Chiefs got him in the 6th, but he projects as a special teams player and reserve CB. The value is solid, but how much value does he bring now?
Grade: B

DT Khalil McKenzie, Tennessee
The Chiefs had just six picks in this draft, and McKenzie was the 3rd DT drafted. None of the guys drafted for this position are considered to be locks. The value was there for this pick, but why three DTs?
Grade: C

Priority needs filled in first two days: 0 (filled the actual need, but reached on all of them, and badly)
Total Points: 13
Average points per pick: 2.17
Grade: D
