Houston was just starting to get something out of DeShaun Watson last season when he blew his knee, and Houston finished 4-12. They had no 1st or 2nd round picks, so what they did have, they would have to use wisely. They still managed 8 picks between rounds 3 and 7, wit needs at TE, OL, DL, CB, and S.
S Justin Reid, Stanford
Had late 1st/early 2nd round value, and fits a need right away after being drafted in the 3rd. That works.
Grade: A
C Martinas Rankin, Mississippi State
His value was rocketing in the closing days before the draft. He had fantastic value in the middle of the 3rd round after being graded as a 2nd round pick by some.
Grade: A
TE Jordan Aikens, UCF
This is where Houston got lost. Aikens had a 7th round grade tagged on him, and they lunged in the 3rd to get him.
Grade: F
WR Keke Coutee, Texas Tech
Coutee had a late 4th round grade, but he was taken as the 3rd pick in the 4th round. A bit of a reach for a need that was not apparent in this class.
Grade: C
DE Duke Ejiofor, Wake Forest
He had a 3rd round grade by some, and is projected to have a shot at a starting job eventually. With JJ Watt's oft failing health, this was a solid insurance grab. Got him in the 6th after having no 5th round picks.
Grade: A
TE Jordan Thomas, Mississippi State
Thomas is a solid developmental prospect, but will have to earn his bread on special teams early on. Still, decent value for a need spot.
Grade: B
EDGE Peter Kalambayi, Stanford
He may not stand up as a DE, but could work on edge rush sub packages. Still, he will also have to find his way on the special teams circuit, and has never really put it all together.
Grade: C
DB Jermaine Kelly, San Jose State
Was never given a grade, and will not likely make the roster.
Grade: F
Total needs filled in first two days: 2
Total Points: 19
Point average per pick: 2.38
Grade: C-
