2018 NFL Draft Grades: New York Jets

The Jets, like the Bills and Dolphins, have not been able to solve the inability to win in the same division as the dominant Patriots. Drafting has not been kind to the Jets in recent seasons (see Hackenberg, Petty, Gino Smith, etc.) so it was time to turn it around in 2018. With needs at QB, WR, OL, and LB, where were the Jets to go?

QB Sam Darnold, USC
While the Browns had been targeting Darnold all along, they made a late change to their wants list and drafted Baker Mayfield instead. That landed Darnold in New York, but they would not have graded any differently if Mayfield had landed there instead. It was a win-win in all senses.
Grade: A

DT Nathan Shepherd, Fort Hays State
One of the bigger D2 prospects in recent memory, Shepherd had been flying up draft boards heading into the draft, and had maxed out as a 2nd round prospect. He landed with the Jets in the 3rd. They did not have a major listed need, but the value was great.
Grade: B

TE Chris Herndon, Miami
TE was not really a major need for this draft with the Jets, and they had a slight reach, as Herndon graded as a late 4th round pick, and they grabbed him at the start of it. He is a solid player, but a receiver here would have been a better get on every level.
Grade: C

CB Parry Nickerson, Tulane
He graded out as a 4th rounder by some services, and he could develop into a starter at CB down the road, but the need was not there right now, and it was becoming apparent that the brass was losing focus here.
Grade: C

DT Foley Fatukasi, U Conn
He has starter potential, and could really blow up with some coaching up, as he is still rather raw. Still, the need was not there, and the Jets felt lost again.
Grade: C

RB, Trenton Cannon, Virginia State
He graded as a UDFA, and did not fill an immediate need while being selected in the 6th round. This draft went off the rails for the Jets.
Grade: F

Priority needs filled in first two days: 1
Total Points: 13
Average points per pick: 2.17
Grade: D
