2018 NFL Draft Grades: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay is having issues once again, as they have many times during their history, and they flopped to 5-11 last season as questions persist about the direction of the franchise. They had priority needs at RB, OL, DL, CB, and S in this draft, and how they approached those needs would likely chart their course out of the league basement.

DT Vita Vea, Washington
A lot of folks felt that they would go with Derwin James here at S, but Vea fills a massive need, and he has a lot of versatility on the front line, something that helps get their defense on track. Was it the perfect fit? Maybe, maybe not, but it was a solid one.
Grade: A

RB Ronald Jones, USC
With Doug Martin no longer in the plans, the Bucs needed to find a work horse back, and in Jones, they get that guy. He should provide instant impact here.
Grade: A

CB MJ Stewart, North Carolina
Stewart provided relief for a beleaguered secondary, even if the cost was a slight reach near the end of the 2nd round for a guy with a 3rd round stamp on him.
Grade: B

CB Carlton Davis, Auburn
Davis was sliding when he fell into the laps of the Bucs, who probably should have grabbed him 10 picks earlier. Still, as luck would have it, they were able to grab a prospect who could start on day one.
Grade: A

OG Alex Cappa, Humboldt State
The Bucs had their first major reach here, as he was graded a full round below where they got him at. Cappa was a rising D2 prospect for many, but grabbing him here was a solidly bad reach. Still, if he could develop into a starter down the road, this pick could look great. I just don't like the value for now. Stay tuned.
Grade: C

S Jordan Whitehead, Pittsburgh
The Bucs continued on trying to fix the back end of the defense here, but again, this pick was a solid reach as Whitehead graded a full round to round and a half below where they picked him. He will not give them solid impact as a S this season, and may have to make it on special teams for now. They could have better used this pick elsewhere.
Grade: D

WR Justin Watson, Penn
Ivy League prospect got some rise out of his pro day, and he ended up with a 4th round grade by some scouts. They landed him in the 5th, but did he fill a real need? No.
Grade: C

LB Jack Cichy, Wisconsin
He was so good before losing the last season and a half with pectoral and knee injuries. His health scares me, and he did not fit a need here, even though he had decent value according to grade. He will have to work his way back, and I am not sure if too much time has been missed here. He also did not fit a primary need.
Grade: D

Primary needs filled in first two days: 3
Total Points: 21
Average points per pick: 2.63
Grade: C
