The Lions finished 9-7 last season, and they continue to flounder in the middle of the NFC, wasting Matthew Stafford's best years in the process. They need to make a move, gather some weapons, and push beyond the middle. Primary needs included DL, LB, OL, RB, and TE. Here are my rades for the Lions picks:
C Frank Ragnow, Arkansas
Ragnow was a reach in the 1st, as the Lions could have made a 2nd round move to grab him. It was a need pick, but probably not the right one.
Grade: C
RB Kerryon Johnson, Auburn
Johnson was graded out as a late 2nd to early 3rd round pick. He should turn out OK, but they even traded up 8 spots to get him. A bit of nonsense.
Grade: C
S Tracy Walker, UL-Lafayette
Walker was graded out as a 5th or 6th rounder. He was taken by the Lions in the 3rd. Decent player, but not worth the reach.
Grade: D
DE Da'Shawn Hand, Alabama
Hand never lived up to his billing at Alabama, and had slipped from a 2nd to 3rd round grade to being a 4th round pick. This was the first time that the Lions found good value and got smart throughout the process.
Grade: A
OG Tyrell Crosby, Oregon
Crosby is considered as a candidate to eventually become a starter in this league. Everyone had a differing grade on him, but by draft weekend, he had settled as a 2nd to 3rd rounder. The Lions nabbed him in the 5th.
Grade: A
FB Nick Bawden, San Diego State
A classic, old school FB, Bawden was the lead blocker for the best stable of RBs in the nation. He could have a solid shot here, and the value was right.
Grade: A
Priority needs filled in first two days: 2
Total Points: 17
Point average per pick: 2.83
Grade: C
