The Dead Pool is where coaches go swimming when they are likely to be fired sometime soon. We had three coaches listed in the Pool in volume 1, Darrell Hazell, David Beaty, and Chris Creighton. While all three won their openers over weaker FCS competition, I am not feeling the need to let them head for dry land just yet. Here is this week's look at who is Swimming in the Dead Pool:
Darrell Hazell, Purdue
This Week: Defeated Eastern Kentucky
Update: Hazell's win over EKU wasn't exactly a blowout by most standards, and the Colonels hung around for a while. The tougher schedule is upcoming, including a Big 10 slate, where the Boilers only beat Nebraska a year ago.
David Beaty, Kansas
This Week: Defeated Rhode Island
Update: While getting any win after last season is important, the Jayhawks blew out probably the worst team in a Power FCS conference in Rhode Island, where the facilities are about as good as some mid level high schools. Winning handily against Ohio (coming off a 3OT loss to Texas State), and Memphis (1st year coach Mike Norvell in charge) will go a long way toward determining if Beaty can get out of the pool.
Chris Creighton, Eastern Michigan
This Week: Defeated Mississippi Valley State
Update: Blew out one of the worst programs in FCS football in the Delta Devils, but that will not change the hearts and minds of people who want to fold the program. EMU likely falls to Missouri next week before playing Charlotte the week after in what could be a second opportunity for a win.
Steve Addazio, Boston College
This Week: Lost to Georgia Tech
Update: Addazio is new to the pool this week after blowing a late lead and losing to Georgia Tech. BC has not won an ACC game since 2014 now, and the offense is still a mess. The Eagles could be looking for a new coach before anyone knew what happened.
Bill Snyder, Kansas State
This Week: Lost to Stanford
Update: Snyder is also new to the pool, and while it is only heading into week 2, it has become obvious after watching the loss to Stanford how stale this program is getting. K State will allow Snyder to come to the decision to leave on his own, but if he fails to do so soon, they may have to pull a Paterno/Bowden/Mack Brown on him and force his hand.
Charlie Partridge, FAU
This Week: Defeated Southern Illinois
Update: Even though the Owls beat SIU this week, I saw enough in this program to warrant a fall. SIU is not one of the better teams from the Missouri Valley Conference, and yet the Owls struggled mightily to put the Salukis away time after time, and were lucky to escape with the win. Partridge does not look like he has the Owls moving in a good enough direction to get a 4th year.
Ron Turner, FIU
This Week: After a tough first half played against Indiana, the Panthers trailed by just 2. The wheels fell off the wagon after that, and FIU was lifeless after the half. Turner needs to get the Panthers to a bowl, but I don't see it happening.
David Bailiff, Rice
This Week: Lost to Western Kentucky
Update: The Owls were blasted in the season and CUSA opener by WKU 46-14. The Owls look like this could be one long season right out of the gate, and the next two games are against Army, who shocked Temple, and Baylor. A 0-3 start could be the trigger that finally pushes change.
