Reports Come Through, Edsell Fired at Maryland

As was reported last week, several sources, including 247sports.com and the Doctor Saturday blog at Yahoo! were indeed true, and Randy Edsell was fired by Maryland a day after the Terrapins were blasted by Ohio State 49-28. Edsell and LB coach Lyndon Johnson were both cut loose this morning, and OC Mike Lockley has been retained as interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season, because he worked out so well at his previous stops and all...
Locksley, as you remember, was a loose cannon at New Mexico, up to and including getting into fights with staff members and so on, so once again, Maryland is making bad decisions once more.
Chip Kelly will likely be at the top of the want list for the Terps, but whether or not they can afford him or lure him remains to be seen. Remember, Kelly is from the Northeast, so a return to the west coast (USC, or a return to Oregon) is not a lock.
Edsell was in his 5th season at Maryland, and had compiled a 22-34 record, which included an 0-12 record against ranked AP teams as of yesterday. He had been hired away from U Conn, where he had compiled a 44-40 record, but had won a weak Big East to obtain a Fiesta Bowl bit in his final season with the Huskies at 8-5. Edsell was never a popular hire amongst the pundits, and now, as the pressure grows with Big 10 membership, all eyes will be squarely on the athletic department to see what Maryland can put together to lure a winning head coach to College Park.
