Both 247sports.com and the Doctor Saturday blog on Yahoo! Sports have reported that Maryland intends to fire Head Coach Randy Edsell after this weekend's game against Ohio State. Edsell, in his 5th season, is just 22-33 overall, and is 0-11 against ranked opponents.
Reports indicate that a growing dissatisfied fan base and boosters who are sick of losing drove the decision in the end, as Maryland is coming off of a two game set against West Virginia and Michigan where they were outscored 73-6, including a 28-0 loss to the Wolverines in Big 10 play.
There are no reports as of now as to who would be interim coach, and no replacement candidates have been named by the source material.
There were growing fan calls as of last week for the Terps to throw several million dollars at current Eagles Coach Chip Kelly, as it is largely believed Kelly will not be with the Eagles next season. If Texas makes a move on Charlie Strong, Maryland could target him as well. Another candidate could be Marshall's Doc Holliday, who is familiar with the region. Strong has close ties in the mid-Atlantic and south region, while Chip Kelly got his start in the Northeast.
More to come as information becomes more available. Edsell would be the second FBS coach fired this season along with Tim Beckman, formerly of Illinois.
