Week 12 Games of the Week
AAC
Cincinnati (6-4) at USF (6-4)In an improbable scenario, USF could possibly claim the east crown by beating Cincinnati (and winning out) if Temple falls to Memphis, which could happen. The Bulls are surging at the right time, but they must get some work done. Cincinnati is bowl eligible, but not in a divisional race any longer.
Memphis (8-2) at Temple (8-2)
Memphis has been sliding for two weeks now, and Temple is
coming off a week in which they got man handled by USF on the road. Both are
looking for bounce back opportunities, but for the Owls, the East is at stake.
ACC
North Carolina (9-1) at Virginia Tech (5-5)UNC can lock up the Coastal Division with a win this week, and that would send them to play Clemson in the ACC title game. Virginia Tech has nothing to play for with the exception of locking up one final bowl bid for Frank Beamer, so they have some vested interest in playing spoiler.
Big 12
Baylor (8-1) at Oklahoma State (10-0)Oklahoma State is still getting no love from the playoff committee, as they rank just 6th this week. The Cowboys barely escaped from Iowa State last week, so they have to be on their best behavior this week with the Bears coming to town off a loss to Oklahoma, and the Sooners would just love for the Cowboys to fall flat the week before Bedlam.
TCU (9-1) at Oklahoma (9-1)
On the other side of the Big 12 playoff bracket, you have
this gem of a matchup that just got smudged as both QB Trevone Boykin and WR
Josh Doctson are questionable for the Frogs. If neither player goes this week,
TCU cannot hope to beat OU on the road, and TCU needs this win desperately.
With an Oklahoma State loss, OU could claim the league title next week.
Big 10
Michigan State (9-1) at Ohio State (10-0)Neither club has been near perfect this season, but then again, nobody has dominated anywhere in 2015. The Spartans have been wobbly for weeks now, and that loss to Nebraska is still cutting fresh. If Michigan State can upset the Buckeyes in Columbus, the Spartans can walk away with a divisional crown by winning out. If the Buckeyes win this game, and then beat Michigan next week, the Buckeyes take it.
Michigan (8-2) at Penn State (7-3)
Michigan is still alive in the conference race, but they
absolutely need to win out to get there, and that includes winning at always
tough State College before taking on Ohio State next week. Penn State will be
in super spoiler mode this Saturday.
Conference USA
There are no high profile games this week, just a series
of tune up contests before next week’s divisional title games. Western Kentucky
will take on FIU, while Marshall is idle heading into the Herd/Hilltopper
Eastern Divisional title tilt next week. Louisiana Tech visits UTEP, while
Southern Miss hosts Old Dominion before the Bulldogs and Eagles do battle next
week as well for the West title.
MAC
Western Michigan (6-4) at Northern Illinois (7-3)Both Broncos and Huskies are still in the mix in the MAC race, but both need the win this week to stay there. NIU is playing just a shade better, and could eliminate the Broncos this week.
Toledo 44, Bowling Green 28
The Rockets stayed alive in the race for the West title,
as Bowling Green had already locked up the East. The Falcons came out flat, and
the Rockets took advantage jumping out to an early lead off a turnover. The
Rockets do not control their own destiny, and need a loss by NIU.
Mountain West
Air Force (7-3) at Boise State (7-3)Boise State is in trouble for the first time in a long while after losing to New Mexico. A win by Air Force this week would all but ensure a shot at the Mountain Division title for the Falcons, but they must win at Boise, and then travel to New Mexico next week in order to do so. A win here combined with a new Mexico loss would certainly ease things up for Air Force.
PAC-12
California (6-4) at Stanford (8-2)Coming off a loss to Oregon, Stanford has to hope that they are not out of gas. A win over the reeling Bears (losers of 4 of last 5) would ensure a North crown for the Cardinal despite last week’s setback.
UCLA (7-3) at Utah (8-2)
Both clubs are coming off devastating losses last week,
but both are alive and well in the race. Only UCLA can control their own
destiny without help, however, as Utah already has a loss to USC. The Bruins
need to beat Utah this week, and USC next week and they win the South, despite
some really sloppy play lately.
USC (7-3) at Oregon (7-3)
This game has some serious clout for USC. Oregon needs
some help from unlikely candidate Cal this week, but USC can still outright win
the South by beating Oregon and UCLA in the next two weeks. There is still
plenty of opportunity for two clubs who were lost just weeks ago.
SEC
LSU (7-2) at Ole Miss (7-3)As bad as LSU has been the last two weeks, they are still barely alive in the SEC West. They may need some improbable help to get there, but Ole Miss is falling flat, and LSU can help themselves and Alabama out with a win here. Will the Tigers lose three straight?
Georgia Southern (7-2) at Georgia (7-3)
You may laugh all you want, but just a couple of seasons
ago, GSU walked into the swamp and beat Florida, and they were still an FCS
program then. If the Bulldogs don’t watch their backs and play some serious run
defense, Matt Breida and company can make things miserable for the Dawgs at
home.
Mississippi State (7-3) at Arkansas (6-4)
After a very rough start, the Razorbacks still have an
outside shot in the SEC West. They need a ton of help, but they are not dead
yet despite their missteps earlier this season. Mississippi State would like to
eliminate them for good.
Sun Belt
There are no marquee games in the SBC this week, as
Appalachian State and Arkansas State are both idle, while Georgia Southern
heads out of conference to play Georgia.
Independents
The only game worth mention here is Notre Dame’s trip to
Boston College at Fenway Park this week. The Irish should more than win this,
but an upset loss would certainly get them bounced from the playoff for good.
