Welcome to week #3 of the PRS. There have been some major changes with serious shifts taking place this week, with Liberty dropping out of the #1 spot with a loss to Robert Morris. #5 Georgetown dropped with a loss to Yale, #8 Duquesne fell with a loss to Delaware, and Gardner-Webb (#9) lost as well. That's just the top 10. Check the rest as several new teams pop into the top 35.
I am also please to announce this week, that due to popular demand, I am printing the entirety of the 1-AA power rankings from top to bottom so that the fans of every school can more closely check your progress (or lack thereof...). And now, enjoy this week's PRS release!!!
1.Jacksonville State Gamecocks (3-0, 766)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #3, defeated Georgia State 34-27 (OT)
Points Gained: 241
This Week: at Eastern Illinois
JSU got a serious scare at the Georgia Dome when start up program GSU drove them to OT. The road game aspect gained the points, but JSU has to get the focus back that they had in the 2nd half of the Ole Miss game.
I pick: JSU
2. Appalachian State Mountaineers (3-0, 687)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #4, defeated North Carolina Central 44-16
This Week: at Samford
Points Gained: 218
ASU jumped out to a 27-7 lead on NC Central by the half, and the Mountaineers coasted to a win. The competition gets tougher this week, but ASU is int it to win it as always.
I pick: ASU
3. Alabama State Hornets (3-0, 628)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #6, defeated Prairie View 18-15
This Week: at Alcorn State
Points Gained: 221
Devin Dominguez has passed for 9 scores in 2010, but there has been no dominant running game. Andrew Pitts is the rushing leader with 64.3 yards per game. The ASU D has picked off 4 passes in 3 games.
I pick: Alabama State
4. James Madison Dukes (2-0, 565)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #2, Idle
This Week: #16 Liberty
Points Gained: 0 (Idle)
Usually, when a team does not play, they drop more than just 2 spots because of the lack of points gained. However, the Dukes piled up so many points with the win over FBS Virginia Tech on the road, that they could afford a week off. This week will bring a challenge in containing the Flames offense, and more specifically, QB Mike Brown.
I pick: JMU in a tight battle
5. Villanova Wildcats (2-1, 549)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #12, defeated Towson 43-7
This Week: Penn
Points Gained: 279
Nova has rebounded nicely since falling late to Temple in the opener. The Cats have blasted Lehigh and Towson by a combined score of 78-7 since then. Can you see another championship run coming up?
I pick: Villanova
6. Florida A&M Rattlers (2-1, 513)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #26, defeated Howard 50-7
This Week: Tennessee State
Points Gained: 293
The Rattlers have been rolling since losing badly to Miami in the opener, despite not having any kind of an offense to speak of. The offensive issues may be a problem later, but A&M should handle a reeling Tennessee State club this week.
I pick: Rattlers
7. Georgia Southern Eagles (2-1, 503)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #17, defeated Coastal Carolina 43-26
This Week: Elon
Points Gained: 260
The Eagles escaped CCU after the Chanticleers had pulled within 29-26 in the third quarter. Jaybo Shaw rushed for a score and Kyle Oehlbeck returned a fumble for a score to pull away. Elon gave Richmond a major scare last week, so GSU had better be ready.
I pick: GSU
8. Delaware Blue Hens (3-0, 484)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #24, defeated Duquesne 30-6
This Week: @ Richmond
Points Gained: 254
Delaware blasted a very good Dukes team last weekend at home (Duquesne was #8 last week going in) but this week provides the most major challenge of the young season, with a road trip to Colonial rival Richmond. Get yourselves ready for a war and watch this game if it's televised in your market.
I pick: Richmond at home...sorry Hens fans
9. Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (2-1, 478)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #14, defeated Northern Iowa 22-20
This Week: Lamar
Points Gained: 224
Lamar is coming off of a huge win over SE Louisiana on the road. The Lumberjacks are coming off of a hard fought win on the road over Northern Iowa. That being said, Lamar is a start up program again after being in mothballs for many years. Experience will rule the day.
I pick SFA
10. Southeast Missouri State Red Hawks (2-1, 470)
Last Week's Result/Ranking: #18, defeated Southern Illinois 24-21
This Week: Tennessee Tech
Points Gained: 227
SE Missouri has a chance to go to 2-0 in Ohio Valley play with a win over the Eagles, who are coming off of a nice and easy win over a D2 team. The Hawks may be emotionally spent after coming back from a 21-3 deficit against the Salukis last week. Upset alert!!!
I pick: Tech in the upset
11. Central Arkansas Bears (3-0, 466)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #11, defeated Murray State 21-20
This Week: at Tulsa
Points Gained: 172
This week could bring a halt to the party in Conway. Tulsa is not playing well at all, but they still should be able to beat the Bears at home. If UCA can pull off the upset on the road, it would be the biggest win in the history of the program and would establish them as a power.
I pick: Tulsa
12. Youngstown State Penguins (2-1, 457)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #29, defeated Central Connecticut State 63-24
This Week: Southern Illinois
Points Gained: 252
Welcome back Penguins!!! YSU has not had a solid start like this in some time, but now it's all about holding on. SIU blew a huge lead against SE Missouri last week, and should be looking for revenge against someone, but if they are still slipping, the Penguins would be more than willing to give them another whoopin.
I pick: YSU
13. Western Illinois Leathernecks (2-1, 448)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #20, defeated Sam Houston State 56-14
This Week: Indiana State
Points Gained: 248
WIU bounced back nicely from their loss to Purdue, and now it's time to get revenge. Indiana State beat Western last season, and Leatherneck fans should be really angry about that. Time to open up a can.
I pick: WIU
14. Hampton Pirates (2-1, 440)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #19, defeated North Carolina A&T 35-21
This Week: @ Delaware State
Points Gained: 199
Hampton gets another cupcake to feast on in the Aggies this week. The Pirates should go to 3-0 in MEAC play with ease.
I pick: Hampton
15. UMass Minutemen (2-1, 386)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #7, lost to Michigan 32-27
This Week: at Stony Brook
Points Gained: 0 (Loss to 1-A)
The Minutemen didn't bow down to 1-A Michigan, much as I expected them not to. The Minutemen should get back into the game this week against the Sea Wolves on the road.
I pick: UMass
16. Liberty Flames (2-1, 384)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #1, lost to Robert Morris 30-23
This Week: at #4 James Madison
Points Lost: -184
Liberty gave up a score with 0:22 left on the clock to fall to the giant killer Colonials last week. This week comes brings the Flames to the mouth of the meat grinder against the Dukes on the road. An upset would get them back into the top 10 at the very least, but I don't smell an upset here, as JMU is a much better team than Robert Morris. Get ready for another drop.
I pick: JMU
17. North Dakota State Bison (2-1, 372)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #39, defeated Morgan State 35-9
This Week: #24 South Dakota
Points Gained: 211
Brock Jensen tossed for 3 scores last week and got the Bison back into the top 25. This week will bring a date against an old rival from the D2 days in the Coyotes. Both teams have wins over 1-A opponents this season, so this could be an interesting game.
I pick: NDSU at home
18. William and Mary Tribe (2-1, 334)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #40, defeated Old Dominion 21-17
This Week: at Maine
Points Gained: 225
The Tribe has outscored VMI and ODU by a combined score of 66-17 since losing the opener to UMass. It's time to start clawing back into the thick of the Colonial race with another tough roadie to take on the Black Bears, who challenged Syracuse for a half before falling.
I pick: W&M
19. Robert Morris Colonials (2-1, 326)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #42, defeated #16 Liberty 30-23
This Week: at Wagner
Points Gained: 237
The Colonials have defeated PRS top 25 teams two eeks in a row. Now they are the hunted. The Colonials should be more than able to handle the Seahawks next week.
I pick: RMU
20. Georgetown Hoyas (2-1, 292)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #5, lost to Yale 40-35
This Week: Holy Cross
Points Lost: -170
The Crusaders are falling hard right now, so this is a very good opportunity to get back on track and take it to them hard this week. The Hoyas fell to Holy Cross by 12 last season.
I pick: Hoyas at home
21. Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (2-0, 287)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #47, defeated Savannah State 42-7
This Week: Norfolk State
Points Gained: 227
The Cats lost badly to the Spartans last season, so there has to be some measure of vengeance coming into play here. Matt Johnson is leading the team in passing and rushing, so everything starts and ends with stopping him for NSU.
I pick: BCC at home
22. Wofford Terriers (2-1, 283)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #16, defeated Union 48-10
This Week: Furman
Points Gained: 38
The Terriers cruised out to a 42-3 lead at the half last week. They won't have it anywhere near that easy against the Paladins this week. Furman blasted Wofford 58-21 last season.
I pick Furman
23. South Carolina State Bulldogs (2-1, 279)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #21, defeated Benedict 61-20
This Week: Idle
Points Gained: 41
The rushing game buried Benedict early last week. Nothing like taking a week after beating up on an undermanned and outclassed opponent.
24. South Dakota (2-1, 278)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: defeated NW Oklahoma State 48-14
This Week: at #17 North Dakota State
Points Gained: 34
USD handled an easy opponent after tearing Minnesota apart a week earlier. This game will be war against old rival NDSU.
I pick: NDSU at home...have to go with the home crowd.
25. Montana State Bobcats (2-1, 274)
Last Week's Ranking/Result: #51, defeated Drake 48-21
This Week: Eastern Washington
Points Gained: 225
The Eagles are coming off of a stunning home win over Montana, and now come to play Montana State, who is on the rise. This could be a game of power shifts as both look to supplant the Grizzlies as king of the Big Sky
I pick: EWU...but this is going to be close
KNOCKING ON THE DOOR
