Taught a Master's Class
Utah Runnin' Utes
No Jordan Wynn at QB, no problem. Terrence Cain stepped in for his first start in over a year and methodically passed for 207 yards and two scores, and Shaky Smithson returned a punt 77 yards for a score. Wynn was held out due to a thumb injury, but could have played if necessary, but it never was. The Utes are the pink elephant in the room as far as the BCS is concerned, and nobody has acknowledged it yet.
Air Force Falcons
The Falcons ground the Cougars into the turf in Colorado Springs on Saturday, showing that it is now necessary to give Troy Calhoun's boys serious consideration for the MWC crown conversation. This is the team that everyone needs to be aware of. The Falcons were extremely physical and they punished the Cougar offense all day long. 4 different Falcons rushed for TD's on the day and the D held the Cougars to 15 1st downs on the day.
TCU Horned Frogs
The Frogs did what they had to do against an outmatched Eagles club in Fort Worth on Saturday. They were machine-like, and dominated from start to finish, which is what you should do when playing a 1-AA squad. 6 different Frogs rushed for TD's, including QB Andy Dalton, who also passed for one, and Tennessee Tech was held to 150 yards of total offense and 5 turnovers. Unfortunately, on this site, when you play a 1-AA team it will hurt you in the poll, which will be reflected tomorrow.
Didn't Learn Much
San Diego State Aztecs
SDSU struggled to pull away from the Aggies until the 4th quarter. Ronnie Hillman ran for 4 TDs and 150 yards on the day for the Aztecs,, and Ryan Lindley had a decent day passing. The offense rolled up 563 yards of total offense on the day. Even with all of that, the Agiies stuck around way longer than they should have been allowed to.
Failing Grade
UNLV Runless Rebels
UNLV, once again, completely played a no show on offense. This i going to be a recurring them all season long, so we'd better get used to it. The D kept UNLV in the game, and prevented the Utes from running away with the game, but until some semblance of QB play is found, this is going to be a long year in Vegas, and the schedule does not get easier.
BYU Cougars
If this is the kind of play that we can expect to see from an independent BYU football team next season, than boy have they fucked up. The Cougars were lifeless outside of RB JJ Di Luigi, and they never could solve the triple option, as Air Force just did basically whatever they wanted to do most of the day. The QB rotation that worked so well against Washington was a shell of itself on Saturday. I'd say that the Cougars got exposed...big time.
Wyoming Cowboys
The Cowboys followed a lifeless effort against Southern Utah last week with a loud thump this week. To their credit, they were still mourning the death of 19 year old LB Robert Narcisse, which Texas did a very classy job of acknowledging, but the team looked disjointed again. The Cowboys have got to be glad that this series is over, but they never got completely blown out, and had they provided some semblance of offense, they may have scared the Longhorns.
New Mexico Lobos
The Lobos racked up 433 yards of offense, but none of it made it to the scoreboard. Offensively, the Lobos played neck and neck with the stats, but could never do enough to pull even or even close to the Red Raiders. New Mexico has now given up and average of 62 points per game for the first two weeks, and they are weighing the rest of the conference down. I am sure that the MWC is wondering if they can give the Lobos to the WAC in exchange for taking the 3 teams coming in next season.
Colorado State Rams
The Rams are a complete and total disaster. Steve Fairchild was supposed to come in and reverse the trend that ended Sonny Lubick's coaching tenure at CSU, but it's gotten worse...a lot worse, actually. Pete Thomas improved at QB, but he has not found the end zone yet, and one has to worry that the Rams have rushed hiim into service. There is nothing good going on in Fort Collins.
Week 3 Schedule
BYU (1-1) at Florida State (1-1)
Colorado State (0-2) at Miami (Oh) (1-1)
Air Force (2-0) at Oklahoma (2-0)
Baylor (2-0) at TCU (2-0)
San Diego State (2-0) at Missouri (2-0)
Boise State (2-0) at Wyoming (1-1)
Utah (2-0) at New Mexico (0-2)
UNLV (0-2) at Idaho (1-1)
