Taught a Master's Class
Houston Cougars
The Cougars dominated, just as they should have, which puts them to the head of the class in a very wierd week. UH jumped out to a 54-7 lead at the half, and Case Keenum passed for 274 yards and 5 scores on the day. He still managed to toss 2 balls to the other side though, which leads me to believe that he is still suffering from turnover issues that plagued him in the Armed Forces Bowl.
East Carolina Pirates
The Pirates were suppposed to be down in Ruffin McNeill's first season as head coach. The Pirates blew some leads in this game, and failed to play any defense, but the fact that ECU could run up and down the field with tulsa was very impressive. Now if they can fix that defense, East Carolina could compete for the eastern division title again.
Didn't Learn Much
Central Florida Knights
UCF dominated the Coyotes of South Dakota stats wise, but did not crush them on the scoreboard like you would have expected them too. Not that UCF is a mecca of football talent, but they certainly outman USD to the last.As a UCF fan, Iwould have left the stadium feeling a little bit empty with a 38-7 win.
UTEP Miners
The Miners actually trailed in the first quarter and only led 14-10 at the half against UAPB of the 1-AA SWAC. The Miners did pull away in the second half, but QB Trevor Vittatoe never found the end zone Saturday night. This is not encouraging news considering that this is a make or break season for HC Mike Price.
This is a rare occasion where I won't fail a losing team. SMU could have folded when down 28-7 to Texas Tech, but the Mustangs got some heart and charged back, only to fall short. This was a very encouraging performance in the second half. The Mustangs should be right in the thick of the CUSA western division race.
Failing Grade
Marshall Thundering Herd
Nobody actually thought that the Herd had a chance in this game, but at least they could have made a game of it like they did the last time they played the Bucks in a 24-21 loss. This was just a no show performance across the board.
Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles
Wow...and to think that I actually gave the Eagles a shot at knocking off South Carolina on the road. What the hell was I thinking. Again, a no show performance where so much more was expected. A real shame.
UAB Blazers
I expected the Blazers to lose to Florida Atlantic, but what I didn't see coming was that the Blazers would blow a 28-12 lead in the process, getting outscored 19-3 the rest of the way. Neil Calloway is on his way out the door in Birmingham.
Tulane Green Wave
A rare occasion that I put a winner in the fail box, but here it is. It was sickeningly amazing to watch Tulane struggle for 4 quarters to put SE Louisiana away. Bob Toledo looked like a man who was just waiting to be relieved of his dutites on the sideline. This was a shit win, and nobody has the right to be proud of it in New Orleans.
Rice Owls
Sure, you only lost to Texas by 17, which is a miracle. But even with Texas not playing anywhere near their best football, you still manage a paltry 17 points. Rice showed me all signs pointing to the cellar in the CUSA West again. Good luck.
Memphis Tigers
There were quite a few people from Memohis at this game. They should get their money back. So much for Larry Porter's debut as HC. This actually got TV time, and I think that the advertisers outside of the state of Mississippi should ask for their money back too.
Tulsa Golden Hurricanes
It was more like the golden showers this week. ECU was supposed to be way down and rebuilding under a new coach. Tulsa was supposed to recover from the nightmare of 2009. Well the offense did their part. How can you not defend an offense that is almost entirely comprised of new starters learning a new system. Either ECU has the benefit of flash training like those pesky clones in the Star Wars movies, or Tulsa's D sucks that badly. I take the latter. Now Tulsa is a game down in the conference standings. Way to go chumps.
