Taught a Master's Class
Kent State Golden Flashes
The Flashes did what they were supposed to do and they dominated Murray State from start to finish. They got huge production on both sides of the ball and managed to run away and not look back, and they also shut down the Racers for most of the game. This is a good look at how good Kent State can finally become.
Central Michigan Chippewas
CMU answered more questions than not on Thursday night, as Ryan Radcliffe proved that he can be a very nice replacement for LeFevour at QB, and Dan Enos proved that he can really coach. It wasn't the biggest rout of the year, but it was a solid performance by a team that had many issues to settle coming into the season. Good job.
Temple Owls
I know that the Owls only beat Villanova, a 1-AA team, by 7. However, they lost to them a year ago, and Villanova is the best of the best at the 1-AA level. This was a tough game, and the score reflected so, and Al Golden's boys reversed the negative start of a year ago. Again, a respectable job.
Didn't Learn Much
Buffalo Bulls
This was a very close team to making the Master's Class rating, but something held me back. The Bulls struggled mightily in the first half to get a choke hold on the URI Rams. They ended up having a very nice night at the end, but it was bumpy getting there, and had this game been played against better competetion from the Colonial, such as Villanova, than Buffalo may not have been so fortunate. There were some good signs, but there is muh work to be done here.
Ball State Cardinals
Ball State was tied at the half against a 1-AA flunky program. This game showed me that the 2-10 team from a season ago is probably not much better this season. Not impressed.
Ohio Bobcats
The game this weekend was as exciting as watching grass grow for the most part. The Cats had an easy enough time taking out the Terriers, but it was a nothing game as far as gauging anything useful out of Ohio's attack. Time to play someone worthy.
Failing Grade
Northern Illinois Huskies
It was ugly in Ames, and I am not talking about the area. The Huskies got nothing going on Thursday night on either side of the ball, and were victimized by big plays here and there. They had a shot to pull off a road win at a Big 12 school, but instead they got punked and now look like they have fallen back behind their MAC brethren. I have to rethink their chances on competing in conference play after seeing that game.
Toledo Rockets
Wow...2 points in your home opener, and only because Arizona got called for holding in the end zone. So basically it should have been a shutout loss. There could not have been a worse result if the Rockets tried for one.
Western Michigan Broncos
The Broncos fell flat on the road against Michigan State, a team that has traditionally had terrible luck against MAC opponents in openers. Western was on the verge of rising up a couple of seasons ago, and now they are sinking like a stone.
Miami (Ohio) Redskins
Miami wasn't a total failure, but their defense that victimized Florida's inexperienced offense was not backed up by the offense at any time during this game. Miami still has a boatload of work to do, but the defense may keep them in some games to help rebound from a 2-10 record last season. There are some signs that not all is bad.
Akron Zips
How bad is Akron? What happened to the energy from the team that went to a bowl a few years ago? There is no buzz surrounding this program, and it looks like it could be years before there is any sign of hope. 3 points against Syracuse is a travesty.
Bowling Green Falcons
The Falcons blew a lead against Troy and it cost them the game. Youth kills man. What also kills is having to play on without Freddie Barnes and Tyler Sheehan from last season's team. However, the offense was not the problem here.
Eastern Michigan Hurons
Line up and take your failing grade for another week. It's only been 20 years since EMU was worthy of anything else. They had a chance to defeat Army in the 4th quarter and threw it all away in the final 90 seconds. Oh well...same ole same ole.
