Kansas Jayhawks
I am still not sure how you lose at home to North Dakota State one week only to beat Georgia Tech a week later, but that's what happened in Lawrence on Saturday. The Jayhawks were outgained on offense, trailed at the half, and yet they found a way to win, which is what good teams do. Jordan Webb made the most of his first start at QB by passing for 3 scores on the day.
Nebraska Cornhuskers
The Huskers could very well have slipped up on Saturday against a pesky Idaho team, but they forced 6 turnovers and QB Taylor Martinez had a huge day on the ground. The Huskers jumped out to a 31-3 lead, and then put it in cruise control, aloowing the Vandals two garbage scores late.
Oklahoma Sooners
The Sooners looked very flawed in a week one squeaker over Utah State, but the cobwebs were long gone this week. The Sooners rolled out to a 34-7 halftime lead, and Landry Jones passed for 380 yards and 4 scores to lead the way on the day, and the Seminoles, who I had picked to upset the Sooners, were never in the game past the 5:43 mark in the 1st quarter.
Baylor Bears
The Bears had every right to think that they would be challenged at home against Buffalo, a team very similar to the Bears in many ways. The Bears neutralized Buffalo QB Jerry Davis, holding him to a completion % of just 39.1 for the game. Robert Griffin passed for 297 yards and scored 4 times, and the Bears rolled to a 27-3 lead at the half.
Texas A&M Aggies
The Aggies held the Bulldogs to 269 yards and Jerrod Johnson passed for 4 scores while passing for 349 yards. Christine McNeil rushed for 107 yards as well. The main issue here is that the aggies need to hold on to the football, having turned the ball over 4 times.
Missouri Tigers
The Tigers wasted McNeese State on Saturday night in Columbia. Henry Josey rushed for 3 scores, while Blaine Gabbert passed for 220 yards and a score. This was just another day at the office for the Tigers, as they mangled a 1-AA opponent just as they should have.
Kansas State Wildcats
The Cats cruised to an easy 27-7 lead at the half, and then basically played score for score in theri win over Missouri State. Carson Coffman opened up the offense by passing for 280 yards and 3 scores, while Daniel Thomas did what he had to do by rushing for 137 yards and a score on the day. Nothing special, an easy win, but it's time to play someone real.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Tech jumped out to a 31-17 lead at the half, and then shut the Lobos out in the second enroute to a 52-17 win. Taylor Potts was the leader as he passed for 293 yards and 4 scores for Tech.
The defense was short of awesome at times, but the offense did the job, and Tech pikced up an easy win.
Didn't Learn Much
Texas Longhorns
What's happening to the Longhorns? The defense has been dominant, but the offense is not putting people away, and they fell into that identity again this week in a less than inspiring 34-7 win over Wyoming. The Horns are running too many backs, and nobody is getting into a solid rythm. Garrett Gilbert had a nice day at QB, passing for 222 yards and a score, but Texas lacks the offensive explosiveness from a year ago.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
Kendall Hunter got it done again by rushing for 157 yards and 2 scores, but where is the defense? A week after a demolition of Washington State, the Cowboys had to survive a shootout with Troy. Again, as I warned, the Cowboys sometimes do play down to whomever they are playing. That's going to be a season long trap. OSU actually trailed at the half.
Failing Grade
Colorado Buffaloes
The fans that made thr road trip got buffaloed alright. That was a gutless performance on the road, and one that basically begins the end of the Dan Hawkins era short of a miracle.
Iowa State
The Cyclones have scored a total of 10 points in the last two meetings with the Hawkeyes. That's just not right. Paul Rhodes has a huge task on his hands to improve the talent level in Ames, which has to be one of the toughest jobs in America.
