All of the games have been played, and the landscape has been turned on an ear. It looks like we have a whole new dimension to the 2010 season, and the race for the second half has truly begun...Now let's take a look at the weekend that took place in week 6.
Troy 42, Middle Tennessee 13
Pass: This was supposed to be the heralded return of Dwight Dasher for Middle Tennessee, but Corey Robinson of Troy said screw that, and he stole the show. Robinson passed for 259 yards and 3 scores while completing 70% of his passes.
Fail: Dwight Dasher returned, and so did a truck full of rust. He did manage 179 yards passing, but averaged 1.9 yards rushing desoite scoring both MTSU TDs. What's even worse is that not another soul did a damn thing for the Raiders except stand around and watch Dasher.
UCF 42, UAB 7
Pass: Jeff Godfrey completed 9 of 11 passes and rushed for 80 yards on 9 carries. He is the mutli-dimensional threat that UCF needs at QB. Ronnie Weaver rushed for 2 scores.
Fail: UAB completely fell apart, much as we all expected them to do, and Neil Calloway is sliding into the abyss faster than we can register.
Nebraska 48, Kansas State 13
Pass: This time last season, Taylor Martinez was chucking footballs in the Big 8 conference for Corona Centennial High School (my home town). Now he is a true freshman dominating the Big 12 for an old Big 8 school at Nebraska. He rushed for 241 yards and passed for another 128 on 5 of 7 passing.
Fail: Apologies to the Coffman family, but Carson Coffman is crap at QB for K-State. Daniel Thomas also just saw any potential for post season awards go sailing out the window faster than a freed bird from a cage.
Rutgers 27, UConn 24
Pass: Rutgers finally scored some second half points against an FBS opponent. New QB Chas Dodd passed for 322 yards on the day, which is far better than anything that Tom Savage had been giving them.
Fail: UConn led 24-10 at the half and blew it. Cody Endres, who was supposed to be the QB savior of Storrs, has turned out to be highly avergae, just like the other Husky QBs of late.
Oklahoma State 54, UL-Lafayette 28
Pass: The Cowboys took care of business with a 37-7 second half deluge. Brandon Weeden passed for 5 TDs and Kendell Hunter rushed for 127 yards, WR MVP candidate Justin Blackmon caught 13 passes for 190 yards and 2 scores.
Fail: The Cowboys needed a boot up their ass at the half to spark them as they trailed the Rageless Cajuns 21-17 at the break.
Texas Tech 45, Baylor 38
Pass: The Red raiders stayed alive (barely) with a much needed bounce back game in conference play after humbling losses to Iowa State and Texas. Taylor Potts passed for 462 yards and 4 scores.
Fail: This could have been a headt turning win for the Bears, and they wasted 4 total TDs and 384 yards passing by star QB Robert Griffin.
Western Michigan 45, Ball State 16
Pass: Needless to say, Western needed this win, although it still does not save their season. Alex Carder passed for 265 yards, rushed for 66 more, and accounted for 4 TDs. The Broncos led 31-6 at the half.
Fail: Ball State had just upset Central Michigan last week. Way to keep the momentum moving.
Northern Illinois 31, Temple 17
Pass: Chandler Harnish passed for 211 yards and 2 scores, while star RB Chad Spann busted out another 100 yard game. The Huskies shut out the Owls in the second half, and are now the surging favorites in the MAC.
Fail: Temple was coming off of a huge win over Army last week, and was moving up in the PRS. Now, we have to wonder what will happen if the Owls cannot develop a consistent passing attack to go with a stellar ground game.
Syracuse 13, South Florida 9
Pass: The Orangemen have been preparing all of this season for this moment, and the defense took advantage of holes that they had seen in USF's offense. More than a solid conference road win, this win was a real boon to the coaching staff.
Fail: The Bulls had been a scrub on offense all season, and it finally bottomed out. BJ Daniels has sucked all season at QB, and he was held to 9 of 23 passing for 124 yards.
Virginia Tech 45, Central Michigan 21
Pass: The Hokies have won 4 in a row since their God awful 0-2 start, and they look serious about dominating the rest of their schedule. Tyrod Taylor passed for 161 yards and rushed for another 127 yards on 9 carries in the easy win.
Fail: Central has fallen on some seriously hard times since a solid start, including last week's loss to Ball State. Wrong direction here.
NC State 44, Boston College 17
Pass: NC State gets a huge bounce back win this week. Russell Wilson passed for 328 yards and 3 scores in the win.
Fail: BC's QB situation is an utter mess, and Dave Shinskie failed in another opportunity as the starter. This issue is killing the Eagles' 2010 season.
Wisconsin 41, Minnesota 23
Pass: Scott Tolzien was highly effective (17 of 23) and both John Clay and James White both busted the 100 yard mark on the ground.
Fail: The Gophers were a non factor on the field yet again. It's just a matter of time before Tim Brewster is offically shown the door.
Illinois 33, Penn State 13
Pass: 4 Illini backs averaged 4.4 yards per carry or more, and the defense held Penn State to 7 1st downs.
Fail: Penn State folded on Homecoming to a team that they absolutely should have been up for. Ouch.
Ohio State 38, Indiana 10
Pass: Terrelle Pryor was spot on at QB, connecting on 24 of 30 attempts for 334 yards and 3 scores, and the D harrassed Ben Chappell into throwing a pair of picks.
Fail: Chappell also was held to an unusually low 106 yards passing on the day, and if Chappell isn't succeeding, the Hoosiers sink as well. And the annual swan song continues.
Georgia 41, Tennessee 14
Pass: The Bulldogs may not have saved Mark Richt on Saturday, but they took the edge off. This win has to be used to spur the Dogs on for the second half. They can still slavage this thing.
Fail: The Vols were able to move the ball between the 20's, but they generated nothing in the red zone. Matt Simms and Tyler Bray both had success at completion percentage, but they never could push the big play through.
Air Force 49, Colorado State 27
Pass: Three different Falcons rushed for TD's and Tim Jefferson passed for a pair, and the Falcons are becomming the pink elephant in the room in Mountain West discussions.
Fail: Pete Thomas only averaged 3.9 yards per pass. I know that he is a freshman, but pull of the trianing wheels if you want the kid to be any good.
Ohio 49, Bowling Green 25
Pass: Boo Jackson completed 9 passes, and 3 of those went for scores, while Phil Bates rushed for 142 yards and a piar of scores on only 11 carries for Ohio.
Fail: The Falcons outgained Ohio in total yardage and had 5 more 1st downs than the Bobcats, and yet they found themselves down 35-3.
Louisville 56, Memphis 0
Pass: Bilal Powell rushed for 204 yards and a pair of scores, while Adam Froman completed 12 of 16 passes and hit for 4 scores as the Cardinals crushed their old rival.
Fail: Memphis had shown signs of competitive life lately, and they picked one hell of a day to hit the wall. The Tigers gave up 574 yards of offense.
TCU 45, Wyoming 0
Pass: Andy Dalton completed 14 of 17 for 270 yards and 3 scores, while Ed Wesley rushed for 115 yards and a score. Another easy day, as the Frogs have two shutouts in a row now.
Fail: Wyoming was without QB Austin Carta-Samuels, and Dax Crum did all he could, but it was far from enough. The Cowboys may be the biggest disappointment in the Mountain West.
FIU 28, Western Kentucky 21
Pass: 4 different Panthers rushed for scores in the win. FIU gets their first win, and WKU stays winless.
Fail: Bobby Rainey was held to 93 yards and no scores for WKU. Did I mention that they stay winless?
Kent State 28, Akron 17
Pass: The KSU defense scored twice, and forced 5 turnovers from the Zips.
Fail: Neither offense did anything to get anyone out of their seats.
Army 41, Tulane 23
Pass: Jared Hassin rushed for 144 yards and 2 scores, and the Army D did just enough to ensure the Cadets a big win in New Orleans.
Fail: The Green Wave rushing attack failed to materialize, and QB Ryan Griffin went wasted.
West Virginia 49, UNLV 10
Pass: Geno Smith passed for 220 yards and 3 scores and the Mountaineers cruised to an easy win.
Fail: The Rebels were never in this game, and were never expected to be. This was just an easy $750,000 check.
Georgia Tech 33, Virginia 21
Pass: Anthony Allen rushed for 195 yards and 3 scores, and Josh Nesbitt rushed for another 109 yards and a score, and the Yellow Jackets have won 2 in a row after a two game losing streak knocked them from the polls.
Fail: The Cavalier defense gave up 536 yards and the offense picked up 10 fewer 1st downs than the Jackets had.
North Carolina 21, Clemson 16
Pass: UNC converted all 4 4th down attempts on the game, and UNC managed an ugly win.
Fail: The Tigers played well defensively, and Kyle Parker had a decent game at QB, but the when it really mattered, the Tigers could not make the big play at the right time.
Notre Dame 23, Pittsburgh 17
Pass: It was never pretty, but the Irish jumped out to a 20-3 lead and held on for dear life. Dayne Crist passed for 240 yards.
Fail: Neithe Dion Lewis or Ray Graham managed to hit 100 yards rushing, and that meant that a breakthrough game by Tino Sunseri was wasted.
Michigan State 34, Michigan 17
Pass: Kirk Cousins passed for 284 yards, and Edwin Baker rushed for 147 yards and a score, as MSU took advantage of Wolverine defensive deficiencies.
Fail: Denard Robinson had his customary big yard day, but his 3 picks were real killers.
California 35, UCLA 7
Pass: Shane Vereen rushed for 151 yards and 2 scores, while Isi Sofele rushed for another 80 yards in relief. The Bears dominated all day, meaning that they learned something about defending the pistol after their ass whooping at the hands of Nevada several weeks ago.
Fail: Kevin Prince(ss) played like garbage, the rushing attack was a joke, receivers found a way to keep dropping passes, and the defense was made out of thin paper for UCLA. Welcome back to the hotseat Rick Neuheisel.
Arkansas 24, Texas A&M 17
Pass: Ryan Mallett completed 27 passes for 310 yards and 3 scores and the D forced 4 Aggie turnovers.
Fail: Turnovers were the killers for the Aggies, and this is their second loss in 2 weeks. Turnovers were an issue last week too.
South Carolina 35, Alabama 21
Pass: Stephen Garcia completed 17 of 20, Marcus Lattimore rushed for 93 yards and scored 3 times, and Alshon Jeffery caught 7 passes for 127 yards and 2 TDs as the Gamecocks took out #1.
Fail: Mark Ingram and Trent richardson never got churning, and Ellis Johnson's D frustrated Bama all day long. Greg McElroy had a good game for the most part, but Bama got into a huge hole, and it was too deep to get out of at the end.
Louisiana Tech 24, Utah State 6
Pass: The Bulldogs finally woke up. Lennon Creer rushed for 2 scores, and the defense held USU to 195 yards not long after they dominated BYU.
Fail: USU has no identity. Dominate or scare one week, become a no show the next, and Diondre Borel was definately a no show this week.
Oregon 43, Washington State 23
Pass: Nate Costa shared the QB job and passed for 151 yards while rushing for 84 yards. LaMichael James added 136 yards and 2 scores as the Ducks survived another slow start to crush WSU.
Fail: The Cougars are just one step closer to ending another terrible season. At least Jeff Tuel is developing as a passer.
BYU 24, San Diego State 21
Pass: JJ DiLuigi, Bryan Kariya, and Josh Quezada formed a 3 headed monster in the rushing game, and BYU rode that group to a very important and much needed win at home.
Fail: Ronnie Hillman never really got going, and Ryan Lindley failed to bring the Aztecs back from behind despite tossing 3 TD passes. The Aztecs just can't seem to get a win on the road.
Navy 28, Wake Forest 27
Pass: Ricky Dobbs passed for 2 scores and rushed for 2 more and Navy picked up a must have win. Dobbs 2nd TD pass came with just 0:42 left and tied the game with the PAT pending.
Fail: The Deacons wasted a brilliant performance by QB Tanner Price, who completed 37 of 53 passes on the day for 326 yards.
Oregon State 29, Arizona 27
Pass: Ryan Katz passed for 393 yards and both James Rodgers and Markus Wheaton caught 7 passes each. Jacquizz Rodgers added 83 yards and a score.
Fail: Nick Foles passed for 440 yards and 3 scores, but the Wildcats allowed the Beavers to always be one step ahead.
Arkansas State 24, North Texas 19
Pass: Ryan Aplin tossed one TD pass and ran for 2 more scores, and if ASU had lost this game, Steve Roberts may have been in trouble.
Fail: The rushing game went well for UNT, but weren't they supposed to be known for their passing game? It never showed up.
UL-Monroe 20, Florida Atlantic 17
Pass: Kolton Browning passed for 282 yards and a score, and the Warhawks held the Owls at bay after nearly blowing a 12-0 lead at the half.
Fail: FAU has completely jumped the tracks this season, and Jeff Van Camp was not very good at QB yesterday. Alfred Morris rushed for 153 yards, but it was wasted.
Cincinnati 45, Miami (Ohio) 3
Pass: Zach Collaros was very effective and efficient and the Bearcats win what was basically a meaningless game.
Fail: Nothing worked for Miami, even though Zac Dysert gave it his all. The defense was a complete no show.
Missouri 26, Colorado 0
Pass: Blaine Gabbert passed for 191 yards and a pair of scores, but he did get hurt. James Franklin took over at QB, and the D got a shutout.
Fail: If anyone has any doubts as to what will become of Dan Hawkins when this season ends, watch the film. Horrible game by the Buffs, and they cannot compete against the better teams from across the PAC-10.
Utah 68, Iowa State 27
Pass: Jordan Wynn passed for 325 yards and the Utes had 41 on the board at the half.
Fail: The Cyclones gave up 593 yards and Austen Arnaud only completed 13 of 31 passes.
Vanderbilt 52, Eastern Michigan 6
Pass: The Commodores scored by air 3 times and by ground 4 times.
Fail: The Eagles were held to 10 1st downs for the game.
East Carolina 44, Southern Mississippi 43
Pass: Dominique Davis negated his 3 picks by throwing the game winning TD pass with 4:46 left in the game, and the Pirates held on.
Fail: Just when you think that the Eagles are going to start making their run, they trip over themselves. They had let themselves get down 20-0 in the 1st quarter before coming back, only to fall at the end. The Eagles wasted 4 turnovers.
Auburn 37, Kentucky 34
Pass: Cameron Newton rushed for 198 yards and 4 scores, and Wes Bynum nailed the game winning FG with 0;02 left.
Fail: Auburn blew a 31-13 lead to have to win it in a nail biter.
LSU 33, Florida 29
Pass: Well, lateral actually...that was one gutsy call by Les Miles that led to the win. When asked what he thought of people saying that he was winning lucky, Miles replied, "I don't give a rat's ass".
Fail: LSU led 26-14, and actually blew the lead and fell behind with 3:25 left in the game before driving down for the winning score. LSU is, quite frankly, winning lucky, and luck always runs out eventually.
Purdue 20, Northwestern 17
Pass: The no name, injury prone Boilermakers got a huge win on the road against a previosly unbeaten team. Rob Henry rushed for 132 yards and a score.
Fail: The Wildcats had been tempting fate for a couple of weeks, and fate kicked them in the teeth yesterday in Evanston.
SMU 21, Tulsa 18
Pass: Kyle Padron passed for 381 yards and 3 scores and Zach Line added 92 yards rushing as the Mustangs held off Tulsa.
Fail: Tulsa fell behind 21-10 and could not get the big plays to come from behind, and their season is all but over.
Mississippi State 47, Houston 24
Pass: Vick Ballard rushed for 134 yards and 3 scores, while Chris Relf and LaDarius Perkins each added one more score on the ground as the Bulldogs beat up on the Cougars on the road.
Fail: David Piland was granted the starting QB job this week, and had a solid game, but all of the injuries and issues had to have an effect at some point, and that was Saturday.
Florida State 46, Miami 17
Pass: The Seminoles have been on a different plain since losing to Oklahoma, and they destroyed their arch rival. Chris Thompson rushed for 158 yards and Jermaine Thomas rushed for 78 yards and a pair of scores.
Fail: Miami just could not keep the big play away from the Noles, and they probably just saw their season come to an end.
Boise State 57, Toledo 14
Pass: Kellen Moore passed for 267 yards and 3 scores, and the Broncos rolled up 500 yards on the day.
Fail: The Rockets turned the ball over 5 times, and they never got into the game.
New Mexico State 16, New Mexico 14
Pass: NMSU had all of 205 yards of offense and 11 1st downs, and still managed to beat the hapless Lobos.
Fail: The Lobos fall to 0-6 and Mike Locksley will be fired any minute now, possibly as early as this week.
Stanford 37, USC 35
Pass: Andrew Luck completed 20 of 24 passes for 285 yards, and Stepfan Taylor rushed for 104 yards and a score, while Nate Whitaker nailed a 30 yard FG as time expired to give the Cardinal a huge win.
Fail: The Trojan D never could come up with a big stop at the key points of the second half. The offense was wasted again, as they kept up with Stanford blow for blow.
Rice 44, UTEP 24
Pass: This win by the Owls just screws up the CUSA picture in the western division. It seems to be the division that nobody wants to win every season.
Fail: UTEP should have destroyed Rice. There was no excuse to blow this one.
Hawaii 49, Fresno State 27
Pass: MVP QB Candidate Bryant Moniz passed for 376 yards and a pair of scores, Alex Green rushed for 3 scores, and Gre Salas caught 2 TD passes, as the Rainbow Warriors blasted the Bulldogs.
Fail: Ryan Colburn was picked off 3 times in the loss, and Fresno let a close game at the half get away.
Arizona State 24, Washington 14
Pass: Steven Threet saved his job by passing for 288 yards and 2 scores, and he could have saved Dennis Erickson for another week.
Fail: Jake Locker continues to see his status drop, as he cannot win important games, and make no mistake, yeaterday's loss was an important one.
Nevada 35, San Jose State 13
Pass: Colin Kaepernick passed for 273 yards and rushed for 91 and Vai Taua rushed for 196 yards and 3 scores as the Wolfpack win again.
Fail: Jordan LaSecla was picked off twice on important drives, and the Spartans watched the Wolfpack pull away after the half.
